DIY Crawler Hauler & Bugout Camper BUILD

  • This video has been a very long time coming. Its my second attempt at building my own crawler hauler and bugout camper. I've never been able to find a toy hauler that can carry a full size Jeep so I decided to just make one. Although this is not a full how-to video it does go over the main build process and features of the project so far. This is by no means anywhere close to being finished. There is still so much more to do and I can't wait to complete and share it all with you!

My take on DIY campers is , if you get in it, it doesn't leak, you can stay warm and dry and get a good night's sleep and it looks good on the outside, you're good to go. Looking good. Be proud.

Plus it has a higher resale value and the damn things don't leak like camper trailers you got to constantly seal them damn things up it's stupid how they build them you buy a enclosed trailer you make it what you want it if you have the skill and you can do multiple things with it enclosed trailer that's what I love about that idea I can't wait to get one

    A few ideas.
-Flip out floor between the deck and your door.
-Sink a table leg in the deck, sink it so when you need to fix Jeep it will not be on your back when you are under your Jeep.
    -Awning, a big sturdy awning.
-Paint the house part white, black box will be an human solar oven.
-Quick disconnect for the stop block, when you come from your solar human oven to the deck and had two cans of cola drink you will fall from it every time, its like trap wire. :D

I did all this in 2003 when I was faced with getting my camper & ATV's to the hunting lease, in one trip, 350 miles away. This was just before even toy haulers came on the market. Commercial campers are made of balsa wood & paper-mache. I settled on a 16' cargo trailer & I still use it. It has two beds with memory foam mattresses, HVAC, a 21 CF Fridge, 6' kitchen countertop, sink & outdoor cooking setup. The whole rig cost $5200 finished. I have put thousands of miles on it. Necessity is the mother of invention.

My only two suggestions are: protect the propane cans/lines inside and out and for the windows/door trim utilize vinyl trim and build a ledge-ish for the winows...easy to bend/glue and paintable. Good luck and can't wait to see more.

Sorry all the talk about the regulators I just couldn’t resist the urge lol. Dig this trailer though I mean totally dig it. I don’t do much rock crawling but I would love to especially if I owned this. When I was younger and raising my boys we did a lot of riding (dirt bikes and quads) and I had a 14’ covered trailer that I always day dreamed of converting it into a sleeper but we already had a travel trailer so it never went anywhere but a dream. Glad to see you did it and thanks for sharing it with us.

  • @jasonthacker9884
    @jasonthacker9884 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

You should turn the bed into a murphy bed so you can make the frame it sits on now into a couch/storage area. In the corner across from the door put in a counter top with the fridge under it and set up a rack on the deck side under the one you already have for an outdoor kitchen area with like a grill and sink that can be put away so you can water to the kitchen for cooking and washing hands and stuff. Also set up an outdoor shower off the the driver side of the deck with some type of rack to hang a curtain. You would still have plenty of room for cabinets around the top. Just some ideas I had while watching but you have a great design so far just a few tweaks would make this thing amazing

My recommendations for a bathroom is a bedside commode or a 5 gallon bucket with a seat lid. Either one cleanup is so much easier and less smell unless you spend the real big bucks for a composting toilet. Line with a trash bag and fill it with kitty litter. I'd also go mini split or window ac over a over priced inefficient rv rooftop model. Good luck with the rest of the build.

My only suggestion bud, is to put some sheet aluminum on the face of your sleeping cab to reduce wind drag of that bed-liner coating. It won't hurt you in short runs, but could add up in lost mileage and fuel costs for longer hauls.

A suggestion for your concideration, make a fold down table/cat walk that is level with the bottom of your door. As a table it could be used outside for whatever you wish. As a cat walk you could go from inside to the bed of your trailer without having to step down to the ground. My thoughts on the fold down is to make it like the seats from an old military duece and a half, with several hinged legs to match up with pockets on the FRAME of your trailer.(At an angle)

Really cool build and it looks like your attention to detail is very high. One thing I would suggest is changing your position on regulated vs non on running the propane in. I understand the desire to have each accessory run on it's own regulator. But in reality, they probably all operate at close to the same pressure anyway. Most propane accessories have an operating pressure of only about 1/3 PSI. While the tank itself, on a warm day, could exceed 150PSI of head pressure. As you set it up, it will work but if you put the regulator outside and run the accessories with their regulators removed, it will also work, as long as they have the right operating pressure given to them. But if you have a leak on a hose inside the cabin, at tank head pressure it will leak propane almost 500 times faster than at operating pressure.

It was by far the best route as I wanted to use the bed liner for the external for its durability, and obviously didn't have a choice in color. I also really love black, my jeep and my truck are both black. Last reason was I really want to do winter camping and its mostly cold where I go so black works out. Plus with the amount of insulation I have on it I think it will be able to offset any heat gain from the color I get in the summertime.

It would give a factory type finish but not sure how fiddly that would be to cut and install. Probably totally not worth it financially either, if he has to buy them new. 🤷‍♂️ Just spit-balling.

Looks Great!! Even the most simple projects can be very time-consuming because of all the planning and you have to think quite a ways down the road kind of like your steps being wider than your door. My buddy used to say if you think a project will take two weeks you need to double that and then go to the next unit of measure so a two-week project will actually take four months. Lots of truth to that statement!!

  • @ShaneZettelmier

That’s pretty awesome. There’s a ton of space above the hood of your jeep when it’s on there, you could have even put a bed that extended from the camper out and sat right above the hood of the jeep and giving yourself a bunch more room.
You could even punch a piece of PVC through there, 3 or 4 inch and fabricate a little tiny 12 V fan that could run off of your batteries and have a screw on cap that would weather seal it. I would do a couple of outside lights and maybe even some kind of rear hatch so you can go straight out the back to get to your trailer deck, that way if you were parked in the snow or mud you wouldn’t have to walk in it to get up on the deck. Then I might do some kind of awning over the deck you could even have something that attached to the ramps when they are up that would hold the other end of the awning and cover pretty much the whole deck. Also maybe a little barbecue or something on there that could hang off the side and be out of the way. You could also put some kind of removable bench seat over one of the wheel wells in case you had people hanging out with you. And I would try and do some kind of solid anchor mount behind your toolbox to connect a winch to in case you break something and have to winch the jeep up on the trailer. A couple lights outside would be cool and an electric pass through in case you need to plug something in when you’re on the back deck. I would consider making your generator mount removable, something you can quickly pop off so you can put it on the ground. The vibration isolators will help but if you’re trying to sleep in there it might still be a pain. If you just had something with a lock on it that you could quickly pop off and just set it on the ground leaving it connected that might be something you’ll really appreciate later. Lol. There are a ton of possibilities. I would also consider an outside shower on the side, you can get little propane water heaters that work really well, maybe some steel plates on the deck in case you break something on the jeep I need to work on it you could get a couple jackstands on there and be able to get under the jeep and be on the trailer to swap out a you joint or something instead of having to lay in the mud to wrench on it. I’m sure you’ll just keep adding on to it over the years as you use it.
For your water if you could just do a portable tank system and put it in the back of your truck when you’re using the trailer, you could do an electrical connector to run a little pump or whatever but just keep a water tank in your bed. You could just have a second module that you can store the rest of the time but when you take the truck in the trailer out it could just pop in the back of the truck.

Looks great, my only suggestion is try to find things used. I’ve been traveling and full time rving for 4 years and RVs are like boats, parts cost twice as much. If you are lucky, you might find an rv salvage place that sells used items. For bug out situations, I highly recommend a composting toilet. For can build them for $15

Also add a boat seat mount or some way to post up in a chair and drink a beer. Or whatever having your own chair ready to go is so nice at times. Also if you plan on going out on your own think about things as if you got hurt like broke a leg arm foot make sure you can get to you needed things and can load up the crashes keep too. Even if you don’t plan on doing it alone. It makes things nice when they are needed and sometime no one else has even thought about it. Kinda the point of your own tow rig is if you brake down having fun you still get home even if your loping on a rigged crutch getting home. Always be prepared for as much as you can and then some and learn from each trip. Learned a lot growing up and always travel with the set of I have to make it home at some point with all the toys. Either drag them my self home or keep cash to get a towel with the toys home. Always keep a ride home either bye fixing things your self repairs or Sapir parts carried and always keep some cash hidden somewhere in case you have to make a parts run to the store after flipping it and lost phones and wallets. But I’m not made of money and work hard for my money but I still try and have fun. And like to have nice things. So sometimes having to build them your self and maintain them your self or pay someone else. Plus it’s about the adventure and how you got wherever you were going. Plus sometimes you have to build to have exactly what you want and piece it back together a few times till you get it worked out. But it’s part of the fun. Also always keeps like freeze dried food stached in the keep just in case you get stuck somewhere 2-3 days longer then you wanted to since parts are on order your in some small town that’s closed on the weekends. Just keep it away from the animals like in small ammo can bolted some where. Or if the trail is too small to fit the tow rig. Just some things to think about. Learned from experience and years of camping and playing with dirt bikes boats wake bords and just long road travels. Spend less money on paying people to do things and less buying things and build them your self then spend more time out and enjoy using the toys inside of too busy working.

I think I would add a cover for your propane that all four seasons, Put a window on the back of your cabin so you can still look out the back, and probably made the cabin into a faraday cage just for giggles so you can still put you electronics and not have to worry about them. put some solar power on your roof, probably put some 5gl cans for water with a foot pump and a little sink and counter top for cooking inside too during the cold months. But over all pretty darn cool.lol just saw the wife in a pic cute, lol that's funny! :)

Cool build, thx for posting it.
The reason you normally have a regulator at the tank in an RV or a boat is because the tank pressure is around 125psi. Downstream of the regulator is only a few psi.
If you have a failure in a high pressure line, you'll hit the Lower Explosive Limit long before the ethyl mercaptan in the propane tells you there's a problem.

@@CodeBrownProductions That's what you want to believe about me. That's because something I said rang true, maybe even poked a nerve, got under the skin, and you don't want to believe that there's someone with a shred of intelligence that doesn't think highly of you, your decisions, or your projects. Instead of choosing to laugh it off, or even point out how I might be wrong, you lower yourself to make lame insults a nine year old could think of to save face. But really, you know that what I said has merit. Obviously. So go ahead, dismiss me, use whatever descriptive insult you want, something that will stave off your bruised ego and satisfy your overdeveloped self-consciousness. It doesnt change the validity of the things I said. It doesn't change the fact that something I said goaded you enough for you to come back "swinging." I hope these things fester in your mind, make you realise what kind of wasteful and useless worm you really are.

Maybe have one on the door side and one in the rear. Also look into either shocks or Sumo springs for both your trailer and tow vehicle.

Hm if you scrap the bed as it is and scrap the upper cabinets you could do a pull down bed or the electric lowering euro bed. That way you could have a lounge area with a coach or even a diner arrangement so you can chill inside in bad weather, eat dinner at the table, play a game of cards or edit your videos. I think you even got space for a workbench/cooktop/countertop opposite where your bed is now. When evening comes drop down the bed via pulleys and go to sleep. Next morning, heist the bed up and you got an entire living room. Don't clutter the camper with cabinets. Bring only what you need in plastic containers rather then cabinets that eats a lot of real estate.
