Hewenden Railway Viaduct & Reservoir of the Queensbury Lines
Hewenden Railway Viaduct, situated near Cullingworth, West Yorkshire, England, originally served as a railway viaduct along the Queensbury Lines. Being one of the highest viaducts in Britain, it has been recognised as a Grade II listed structure.
The viaduct was built for the Great Northern Railway to carry a new branch line between Keighley and Thornton. Soon after its official opening in July 1883, the route became of strategic importance for through goods traffic, particularly in connection with the region's extensive textile industry. However, the line's fortunes took a downturn during the twentieth century. During October 1963, the viaduct's use by railway traffic ended as a result of the line's permanently closure. Despite this, it has remained intact. Since 2005, the viaduct has formed part of the Great Northern Railway Trail, trafficked by walkers and cyclists alike.

Bob Cryer, a former MP for Keighley and railway enthusiast, was instrumental in preserving the viaduct from demolition.

Great stuff Ant. Even if it sad to see no railway line on it anymore its great that its been looked after and is used as a popular footpath. Unfortunately some grade listed buildings don't have the same care.

Good to be out in the open on such a magnificent structure, the drone shots make it look quite insignificant but up close its a fantastic piece of architecture. Hooks for attaching ropes etc for inspections? That's quite a station complex for a rural scene? Good stuff as usual Ant 👍👍
Someone said the rings may also be for abseiling. Inspections are possible too. It's been nice to do a lot in Yorkshire recently I think it's time for me to do stuff closer to home again

I think the difference is amazing in what was 60/70 years ago and what's there today.

I presume the little bridge across the spillway was fenced off which is why you couldn't do a circular walk.
Another suggestion for the rings in what was obviously a larger refuge than the others - could there have once been a signal at that location with guy wires to stabilise it when windy?

That is a wonderful viaduct. I wonder if those rings in the refuge are something to do with maintenance and suspending something to dangle off it. Great drone shots as well
I recently cycled across both the Thornton and Hewenden viaducts. Pity they are no longer directly linked but what great structures they are.
You are quite skilled at putting your drone to work, great aerial shots. The skill of the stone workers really shows. Ant, thanks for your time and hard work......

Walk another half mile or so towards Cullingworth there's Cullingworth Viaduct though the village. Also Thornton Viaduct a mile or so other side of Wilsden (not currently. Inked by path) are both impressive walkable Viaducts.

Just been down a 2hr rabbithole after the first few mins of this vid.
Searching through maps, images, nls etc.
Followed the viaduct and rail line all the way round to the Keighley and Worth Vally Rlwy,
Mills and all.

Superb viaduct...what a view from up there, not just of the reservoir but surrounding landscape. Thank goodness it's been preserved. I do have a weakness for Victorian viaducts, they just add to their surroundings in a way that's just breathtaking. Well made video with the old pictures for reference. Thanks for showing us this magnificent structure!

Great video Ant. Do you think those eyelets could be for abseiling? A few years ago some idiots were abseiling off Saltburn viaduct and tied their ropes to the rail! A freight train came along and luckily stopped . The abseilers said they thought the line was disused!
Ohhhh yes they may have been used for that. Can't believe the idiocy of some like you say about Saltburn 😱
They seem to be above one of the higher points of the viaduct, might have been original or later for the restoration so a Steeplejacks Bosuns chair for inspections?

Hi Ant, Great video on the Hewenden Viaduct and reservoir. I just am so impressed with the quality of stone work. To build the Viaduct for two trains and no Rebar to hold that much weight and last this long. Thanks for the video and information
Great video again. If I'm not mistaken, long span viaducts and bridges are curved because it gives better wind resistance in high winds. I know the M60 and Thelwall Viaducts are curved because of that reason.
You've got me thinking now or straight ones 😆
I'm also sure they were built with high arched spans so the wind can go through them. They would lose their structural integrity if they were solid because the wall would act like a sail and start to twist and buckle, causing collapse in the wind.
The stone was cut to size and wonder what the machine looked like and was it done on site.
Amazing structure when one consider it was built by hand.

Wasn’t there a halt at Harecroft? Wilsden was nearer to Thornton Road bridge and Well heads tunnel.
It’s high time Sustrans linked the whole route and opened the tunnels to walkers and cyclists. Clayton tunnel is blocked, buried and built on, but Queensbury tunnel isn’t. There’s nothing to stop that being opened.
I guess that the metal loops may have been used as tie off or safety rope points as before it was surfaced and was still railway hardcore there were manholes on places presumably to check the insides on the structure. I only know as used to play there as a kid and had a schoolmate who lived in one of the station cottages.

Looks like another ex hydro power system to me.
Railways and Reservoirs seem to be connected. in some way.
Your job is to perpetuate fake history based on time that doesn't actually exist.
