Hey Everyone! Today we're checking out the ORIGINAL Yamaha Broadbass, the 1978 BB-1000. Big thanks to friend of the channel Joe for letting me borrow this bass (forgot to mention it in the video, sorry!). This amazing time capsule of an instrument is a look back at the incredible level of craftsmanship and attention to detail that you just don't find anymore. Every detail is perfect. Let's check this BroadBass out!

When I was a kid and MTV was brand new, there were 3 VERY popular Japanese basses you'd see in countless music videos at that time. First was the various Ibanez Musician basses. Then the various Aria Pro SB basses. But the ones I saw all the time were the Yamaha BBs. It seemed like these Yamahas were everywhere. And the variations of these basses included single P, PJ, humbucker, active, bolt-ons, neck-thrus, you name it. But they all had that distinct body outline and that paddle-ish headstock. The Yamaha BBs were far less expensive than a Fender or Gibson with way better quality control. The big joke of the day was, "Now imagine if the Japanese made cars. Boy, we'd really be in trouble!"
Exactly the reason I bought one in 1987 - all my heroes were using them.

This is easily one of the best sounding and looking P-style basses you’ve ever featured on the channel. Such a fat, punchy tone. That original pickup clearly hasn’t been swapped out for a reason.
Love that scritchity top end. And when the tone control is at 5, it sounds like half. Imagine that.
Yepp. My BB1000S from - 82 is mine since late 80's. Neck through gives it an extreme sustain. And the PJ configuration proves itself in all kind of music genres.
Yamaha's top-tier instruments are some of the best in the world, but the ones that were made in the end of the 70's/beginning of the 80's, were just on another level. The BB basses and SG guitars from that era are the absolute finest instruments I've ever had the pleasure of playing. I would also argue that their modern Revstar range are the best guitars made today. From the cheapest $600 models, all the way to the most expensive $2000 models, I haven't found anything that beats them at their respective pricepoints.
I love the reverse P pickup BBs. BB-2000 especially. The reverse pickup is just so good sounding, especially in the PJ configuration.

Awesome lobster, I have the exact bass. This bass is magical. I got super lucky with mine. For $300 canadian with case and candy in impeccable condition. I have 12 Yamaha basses and still want more.

My very first real bass guitar was a BB300 that was made sometime in the 80s. Back in the early 90s my girlfriend at the time (who is now my wife) bought it used for $150 and gave it to me for my birthday. I was a poor and gig-less keyboard player at the time that saw a lot of need in the area for bass players. That simple purchase put me on a completely different musical path and changed my life forever! It's not as fancy at that BB1000 but it's still bullet proof solid, plays really good and sounds decent, though not as bright and aggressive as your 1000. I still have it today, although I had it defretted and added a jazz bass pickup in the bridge position.
My first real bass was also a BB300 that I bought new in 1988. I loved it so much that I bought two more Yamaha BB basses over the years, one being a fretless. Great basses and I wish I would’ve kept one of this old BB basses of mine.
My first bass was also a BB300, got it in 1988. I still have it and still love it. I've gotten "nicer" basses since then, but if I had to let go of everything except one today, I'd keep the BB300.
These Yamaha basses are so nice! I have a BB2000 and BB3000 both from 1983 and the play and sound so good! I also have a newer BBP34 which is really nice as well they are still making fantastic instruments to this day.
The BB1600 is my favorite bass that I’ve ever played. They’re just unbeatable
I had the chance to buy one of these. I held off on it and 5 years later I still regret not getting it. The BB series is my absolute favourite !

I have a BB3000 that I bought new in 1987. A great descendent of the BB1000 and workhorse of the mid-80s which added neck through body, ebony fretboard, more of a jazz sized neck with a P/J pick up config. Great for every style of music. They later did an active model (BB3000A) but the passive ones really are the best IMO.
One of the other notable BB basses was the 5-string BB5000, one of the most popular (and widely available) early 5 strings that pros like Nathan East used.
Would love to see the Lobster review the BB5000 one day!
Wow! Just... just WOW!!! What. A. Bass. I do prefer a traditional P as it has a bit more "snap" in the top end, but this thing just growls. I absolutely love old Japanese basses and those early BBs were among the awesomest. I had 2 cheaper ones - a BBG5S and a BB615 - and both were rock-solid, good sounding workhorses. I'd love to get an 80s BB at one point. Love'em!
Waaay back when, I made a comment on talkbass that the "BB" in the BB bass stood for Bunny Brunel, and that it was designed by Yamaha as a signature bass for Mr Brunel but they severed ties with him as an endorser before its release and replaced his name with "Broad Bass." I was properly roasted by almost everyone on the forum. In my defense, i swear to god it's what I had read in an interview with Bunny Brunel in some short-lived bass magazine from the 1990's. Oh well. 😂
Woo! That bass has some serious tone going for it! Love the subtle artistic elegance of that pickguard profile too. Brilliant design touch, like so many Japanese instruments from that era had.
This bass going through an old GK or Roland bass combo… oh man that brings back some good o’l sounds!

I ve got a BB1024X, made in Indonesia. All the Yamaha instruments like all the electric guitars are underrated, specialy the Revstar series.

My first bass was a Yamaha BB, although maybe the most cheesy one they ever made: a BB G5. Transparent blue over a fake "quilted maple" photo flame top, served with golden hardware. Still a very nice instrument to play with a decent sound. This one is for sure on a completely different level! I have a soft spot for Japanese vintage basses, they just have their own personality and can give you some serious vintage mojo without the US tax. I love my Aria Pro II RSB Standard from the early 80s, even though it can't compete with this BB. Old Ibanez basses are also very nice, but my favorite has to be the one you demoed here!

I had a fretless Yamaha bass, I don't remember what model, back around 2008. It is one of the very few basses I wish I'd held on to. The build quality was just supurb and the sound...Well the best way to describe it is that it sang.

First decent (aka not beat up by multiple years of students) bass I played was a BB200 back in 1990. I've not gotten one of my own but I've been quite tempted over the years, with my mid 80s Vantage bass (made in Japan by Matsumoku) holding it off so far, but as I want to get into fretless, seems like a nice Yamaha would do the trick ;)
Always had a soft spot in my heart for those basses. This one is an amazing example of how they should be. “They don’t make them like they used to.” Also, nice progression on the pick skills. You’re a better man than I. : )

Awesome demo, lobster 😎🤘🏻🎸 I’m a huge Yamaha fan and I do own a Yamaha bb bass myself. Great sounding bass. Especially with a set of stainless steel strings. And this bass sounds phenomenal. A legendary bass indeed.

the radius might be 10". I have owned 4 Yamaha basses and all had that radius. It is nice to see some love for Yamaha because they make great basses. My first bass was a Yamaha. Of those four basses only one had neck diving issues

I would love if you were able to get your hands on a Yamaha SB-1C Flying Banana bass. I’ve always loved the way they look but I’ve never heard it played in-depth.
My word, that tone is monstrous. Like a really good P pickup on steroids and amphetamine. Must be the "reverse". I have a modded 1980 Yamaha Pulser 400, which is a traditional p-bass. Workmanship on it is also impeccable. But doesn't have the same beastly growl. Just meanness.
That bass looks amazing for it's age. Did someone keep it under their bed all those years? I love the BB range, and that one is a fantastic find.

The inlays that the current Japanese made top tier P34/35 are also on the Indonesian made BB 734/35. They aren't quite the same oval shape, I think of them as "hot dog" shaped - the same width all the way along with rounded ends (not great with ketchup or mustard on though)

You talked me into buying a Sire M5 with your videos. I have remained strong and resisted your constant display of awesome bass guitars. But the BB-1000 may have broken my resistance. That bass sounds AMAZING! I'm on the search for my own now.

Yes, wifeys are definitely the priority. Well if you ever thin the herd out enough to buy something, I can tell you as a BB2000 owner, wow, they’re good. P pickup is best on the planet, J pickup is also best on the planet. Happy bassing!

ahhh back in the day i had a Yamaha BB1200S - yes a great sounding bass - but I it wasn't raucous enough for me at the time. I so wanted an active bass . 40 years later i got my dream bass. but that's another story.
But the BB1200S is the active preamp version of the BB1200?

I had a Yamaha BB424X that I loved (sold it to help fund buying a Fujigen Mighty Power in the gun metal gray with maple fretboard). I love the Yamaha BBs. I wish there was a double P one
They do have a double P - BB Viii. They are hard to come by though

I have a BB 2000 that is quite similar but is of neck-thru-body design (an improvement over the BB 1000 I think). Amazing build quality, precision and stability. Like it a lot.
I correct my typo above. Mine is BB 1200
Ebony fretboard! Unless the neck was swapped or it was only on the JPN only model. The BB800 was rosewood. This was the only bolt on BB model with Ebony. Comes in with a super funky metric 860mm scale, just short of 34"!
Also their is a huge block of brass under the bridge! Check underneath! My BB2000 has it and its heavvyyyyyyy

@@LowEndLobster See if you can find some of the Japanese vintage Yamaha brochures that have been scanned and are on the net, there's a huge variety of BB models that only ever came out in Japan, it's like tripping into a parallel universe; the 80's Yamaha stuff is really hard to beat.

From what i can gather many years ago Suzi Quatro had input into the design of the BB series the shape of the bass..
This is such a coincidence, there's a guy on a bass fb group in my country selling one of those, the same exact model.

not sure if you have Baum guitars on the radar, but maybe theyll let you scope out a bass, they have a model called the Nidhogg that really has me interested based on looks and the minimal demos ive seen so far. hopefully you see this and can maybe make a review happen!
My first bass was a yamaha, BB10055,i think lol.Something I got in a pawnshop real cheap.....I always wondered if 1 or both the "5s" could have been an S.I bought it in 1987.It had 24 frets P and J pickups.I was basically self taught so I had no idea what I was buying,I was just hoping someone might know what I actually bought, lol.

If you remove the bridge you will probably find a large brass block. My BB800 has one.

Actually after this video I've looked on eBay for one of these BB. I've found a few, in Japan. The only thing stopping me is the I still think I don't yet deserve another bass.
That said, P CIJ or a BB?
The only players i remember using Yamaha basses in the 80s were Paul McCartney of Wings and Michael Anthony of VH.

So many decent used amps these days. Depends how loud you want to be. Might be tempted to recommend you buy used from a shop so you get a return period if it is a dud
Can't go wrong with a Fender Rumble 25 or 40 as a beginner practice amp.

Great bass, Yamaha have dropped the ball in recent years with their pickups and electronics. They used to be cutting edge and top quality.
