Back in O.C. Calif when I was 30 my wife heard a commercial on the radio about a P.F. show coming up. Knowing I am a Floyd fan she called the radio station (KMET - LA, “The Mighty Met”) to get information on the concert, The DJ on live radio Cynthia Fox…. said...."Congratulations, YOU are caller number 10, YOU just won tickets to the show and the Sound Check Party before the show"...
I met David Gilmour back stage. He gave us both a signed album that I have in my music room. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I told him his music will stand the test of time with anything from Beethoven or Mozart. He smiled even bigger. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know. . I told him in my eyes he’s a “Legend“. He thanked me and said “Enjoy the show”…. during the concert after the song “Money” he looked right at me and said…. “On saxophone, another Legend, Mr. Raphael Ravenscroft” … acknowledging my comment to him. It is my favorite moment in over 300 shows I’ve seen.
I asked David…. How do you create those awesome solos?… he said….. I sit on a stool and listen to what Roger, Nick and Rick put down and play along. I listen to what I played and pick out what I like, then I put the pieces together into one piece then learn to play it as one. Our fans are fanatics for our shows to sound like the albums so I must play it correctly each time in a show. I have the concert Brochure and album on the wall with David’s picture centerfold.

How cool was that! Even an old David Gilmour still has his mojo and can put you in a zone where you forget reality and just disappear into a Floydian audio landscape. You should see a much younger Gilmour with the classic Pink Floyd lineup in the same amphitheater in 1972. Do Echoes, it is in 2 parts as it originally opened and closed the concert documentary movie. Enjoy! I have the past 50 years. 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

The pedal steel guitar is a console-type of steel guitar with pedals and knee levers that change the pitch of certain strings to enable playing more varied and complex music than any previous steel guitar design. Like all steel guitars, it can play unlimited glissandi (sliding notes) and deep vibrati-characteristics it shares with the human voice. Pedal steel is most commonly associated with American country music and Hawaiian music.

The guitar Dave is playing is a Jedson lap steel guitar, not playing it in his lap obviously but mounted to a stand. He has played two different ones over the years from what I understand, a blonde one in the 70's Live Pompeii video and a rosewood one he seems to be playing in this Pompeii show. The sound is incredible either way it's the player that channels their emotion trough the instrument. Great reaction

Roger was good at setting the ground work, Dave just filled it in with amazing guitars. They really needed each other.

@@lightsideofthemoon13 Roger really didn't take over the song writing until "Animals" and "The Wall", except for "Dogs" and "Comfortably Numb" arguably the best songs on both albums...cowritten with Gilmour.

@@pulsarlights2825 I used to think Roger was a god when its came to writing music. I never gave Dave the credit he deserved with the emotions he brought to a lot of the songs with this guitar playing and writing. Still the best duo besides maybe the Beatles.

@@lightsideofthemoon13 Not to get into the Beatles debate, but I think the facts came out in recent years that the Beatles were not really a song writing duo. John wrote his songs and Paul wrote his, McCartney said he should have just kept his own songs instead of crediting them to "Lennon/McCartney"....have you heard that?

    • @lightsideofthemoon13

@@pulsarlights2825 you know it's funny I was thinking that as I wrote the last comment. I'd say Supertramp but Roger wrote the songs he sang and Rick wrote the songs he sang. It's funny both Rogers had huge egos. They both claimed the music was for the fans but internally they wanted credit. Not sure if your like Supertramp, but that's my opinion.

Great comment about pedal steel guitars below. You have heard and commented on the sound before, usually on country music songs. In this song many different effects were used to give the spacy and eerie sound. In country music it gives the crying sound.

The Instrument David is sitting with is a Pedal Steel Guitar . An improvement of the Lap Steel Guitar . Which is , in turn , an Improvement of the Resonator Guitar .
Pedal Steel is an Electric Instrument . Not usually played So LOUD . A GLORIOUS Noise .

@Lex: Remember back a few weeks you reacted to George Straight - He Stopped Loving Her Today? You asked about the sound of the instrument and I commented that it was a Pedal Steel Guitar. I also said then that David Gilmour of Pink Floyd plays one in some of their songs. Well, here's David playing a Pedal Steel Guitar. The difference in the sound is that David runs the guitar through some distortion effects while the Country Music players don't use those effects but it is the same instrument.
