Starting my 1st year in 2 weeks and I'm am sooo scared everyone else will be better than me but also so excited to model my buildings, I can't wait to start and see how it goes! But after watching pretty much all your videos I'm sure I have a faint idea of what they will require of us so thanks a lot for that!
Just remember that you're not the only one having these thoughts! I can promise you everyone does. And when you're busy comparing yourself to someone "better", someone else is comparing themselves to you. Don't worry. We all feel inadequate sometimes. Also side note: the first year (even the second one frankly) is not an accurate reflection of who's "good" and who's "bad". Chances are the people qualified as "good" straight away are simply the ones with the best presentation skills, like drawing, digital collage, rendering, graphics. Just, you know... All that glitters is not gold :) Anyway, wishing you good luck!

as a fifth year architecture student who's had to defer being full-time for multiple semesters, that piece about feeling behind in life definitely drew me in. It's rough but trusting in my diligence and passion has been helping me to maintain forward motion.
Thank you so much for your videos, I currently started studying architecture but I wasn’t prepared AT ALL, and I was shocked to see how stressful it was and my performance was bad, and so I found your channel and i really wish that I found it earlier, your videos are amazing and help so much, I should’ve seen the skills to know before starting architecture lol as it may have helped to prepare me, I withdrew from my courses, decided to take a step back to prepare myself first and then apply by next semester, so thank you so much, and just a thought, would you consider doing videos about essay writing and research, will help a lot, thanks!
Yeah that would be an interesting topic, since I love writing / researching. I'm sorry to hear about your experience in architecture. I can totally relate - I felt like I was barely staying afloat every day, and I also had a roommate who ended up staying behind to redo some courses. It's ok, everyone goes at their own pace. Later on, it will make so little difference and you will thank yourself that you took the time to learn things properly. What year are you in?
@@DamiLeeArch Thank youuu for your reply😭 i graduated bachelor in civil engineering and im considering applyong masters in architechtural engineering, so as a student coming from an engineering background, i have to take architechtural courses like history and design to build a portfolio, i got accepted at the University of Melbourne, lol got excited at first but was totally stressed out and had my mental health ruined later... i had a lot of confidence while i was studying my bachelor in engineering since i was top ranked but starting in a different environment and a hard univeristy that was totally different than my previous one was a huge challenge... i thought it would be similar to my previous uni and studies but lol i was so shocked and i kinda started having confidence issues, you know as someone always taking high marks, my performance was bad due to lack of preparation and i started having trust issues and you know overthinking and in addition to this, i suck at time managment and easily distracted lol so yeah i withdrew from some courses, will take now some time to learn them appropiately first and then apply again, i cant imagine it was tbe first week and they told us you need to submit this and we need to learn how to use softwate by ourselves, all 3 adobe software with rhino along with sketching lol it was that bad, and looking at my peers they were doing actually quite well so yeah had huge self esteem issues and i started doubting my studying ability.. it was bad so thank you for your channel its helping me build myself back!
@@ayamac6191 That's not an easy transition, coming from engineering to architecture. My previous boss went through the same thing, he thought since engineering was insanely hard, that architecture would be a piece of cake, and boy was he wrong.. He had major self esteem issues, especially coz a lot of his classmates had a bachelor's of architecture. But he's a principal at a firm now! It will get easier, just stick in there, and keep working hard. Apparently it really only takes about a year or two to catch up with the other students who already have an architectural background. It's just practice and familiarity :) If you did well in civil, you will do well in architecture too, oh, and try to not forget your civil background, because it will come in handy when you start working. :)

I really believe that as an architect your freedom is very important in order to stay creative. And constantly learning new things or new ways of doing things will benefit you more than the money.

Currently taking my exams in California and it is a tough process!
So far I've passed 2 exams, taken and failed 2 others, and am scared to death of the last 2. Luckily I got a job in a great firm that gave me experience in all phases of a project.
Your point about seeing a project all the way through from start to finish is my favorite! That really is the best way to learn!
It is a very tough process. But when you're done and you get that stamp, you're going to feel so confident in your abilities. (until it's cut down again hahah) Good luck!

I recently graduated from a university in Egypt and had been considering Canada for quite some time. I still need to stay in the country for a year before I can go anywhere or get any jobs for complicated reasons, but your videos really help me form my intentions with my career and help me tremendously in tuning my expectations and perceptions of my possible future. I'm still on the fence regarding the licensing but we'll see, it doesn't feel worth it at the moment but my main trajectory right now is starting with my hours first and maybe once the year's done my priorities would shift or it'd seem more worthwhile. Once again, thank you so much for your insightful videos!!

I appreciate this, this is so different from the awful hustle culture advice you get online, which isn’t much better than a hot take one would get off the street.
Being conscientious is significantly better than _”doing things before you’re ready.”_ No one is ever _ready,_ but leaning into self care and _flow_ does get someone in sync and inline with themselves, their environment and any expectations put upon them in a any given moment.
Being thoughtful should be the first consideration, always.

Loved hearing your story! I got my bachelor's in 2018 and have been working at small arch firms. I'm looking to get a Master's eventually but #money and waiting to understand what I really love so I can deep dive into research. I totally agree with not being sucked into the big firms. I've learned so much about building and design by working with the partners of small firms.
Yeah I think at least early in your career, working for a small firm can help you grow faster. I also found that when you're applying for jobs, employers tend to prefer small firm experience. Don't get me wrong, I've had my fair share of complaints working for a small firm, but in the end, I'm grateful for the things I got out of it. I didn't have a clear idea of what I wanted to research when I started my Master's, and the programs typically give you flexibility and time to explore different topics, so while I think it's great that' you're trying to find a research topic, I wouldn't let that be your bottleneck!
I couldn't agree with you more! Small firms give you the opportunity to gain experience in every phase of a project.
Hi Dami! Thanks for another video. So I’m finally a senior architecture student. I thought I had my career path set but having kids made me dream bigger which led me to architecture. It’s taken me more time than others to get to this point, and have been a non-traditional student in the very extenuating circumstances. Studying architecture has almost become a touchstone that I revisit when life gets chaotic. I love the the weeds with design and pushing my graphic capabilities. It’s so thrilling! Next I am keeping my head down and going to go straight into a masters program. Post-graduate program I am worried about finding the right fit firm because I am married with a family. I can’t work crazy hours all the time, and I am also worried that people with kids are seen as a sort liability or not as willing to bend over backwards. I am husband and father 1st, and I am afraid that I will lose out for younger job-seekers who can devote more of themselves to work. I plan on keeping my portfolio updated with iterations for different circumstances. Any advice? Thanks for your channel! I always send links to my peers! Keep up the good work!
You're an inspiration for following your dreams! I actually had a conversation with my principal the other day and he's told me that employees with kids, in his experience, have tended to be more responsible/better at managing their time, so that's something to keep in mind. There are unfortunately a lot of firms that have a toxic work culture but there are also a lot of firms that value their employees and respect their time. I would actually try to connect with some of the employees on linked in to get the inside scoop before saying yes to a firm, because what they say during an interview may not be what it really is. You mentioned time/money/experience relation in your video and i wanted to ask:
what are your thoughts on unpaid internships?
Especially during school years and right after BA (i hope no MA faces this terrible problem)
Thanks Anna! For several reasons, unpaid internships should be a no. (unless you're shadowing an architect for maximum 1-2 weeks). Even though you have no experience, you're bringing value with your time and skills. You will know rendering, drafting, and 3d modelling at this point, so the firm will be able to make profit with your time. Ethical hiring practices aside, think about from a purely educational perspective.. If they are not paying you, it means they don't value your time and skills, and that they technically don't have to make proper use of your time to balance out the spreadsheets. Even if you really didn't care about money and just wanted some experience, I think a firm like that wouldn't be able to give you the best learning experience. Unpaid internships are also illegal / frowned upon in many countries and you will definitely be able to find a firm that will pay you during / just out of school!

I believe the process of becoming a registered architect over here has a lot of similarities with Canada, so this is really useful, in helping me know what I can sort of expect if I do end up going into architecture, thanks!

I've just finished my final project for bachelor degree and I hope that I will graduate in October. I've been working as an architect assistant for more than 2 years (I started working after 1st year) and after that I decided I needed a break. My job and studies were very time-consuming and architecture has stopped being enjoyable for me. I took a break and I decided to go for an student exchange in Spain. It was a great idea. Now I love architecture again, I 've made my final project and I am super satisfied with it. I am going to take a gap year, move to another city to work in design studio and in the next year I would like to study abroad! Greetings from Poland!

I'm a Junior as far as credits go but I'm in second year studio. I have had an internship over the past summer. School is a challenge because I recognize that not everything transfers over into an office setting. I Desire to eventually become a licensed architect. I feel like I make it hard on myself on being super technical than abstract and super creative with design
Everyone has their strength i find myself more in the abstract category and working to find a balance in feasibility and technicality, best.

I'm starting college in September and I'm actually scared I've always known that architecture was for me especially because a few family members work in construction including my dad Wich is an electrical engineer. And i also love the idea of creating emociones with the help of architecture. But I'm still scared for my grades and math and physics and everything that come with architecture school. I guess I'm just really excited but also terrified of failure. I've been watching everything and anything about architecture so that i feel a little bit more prepared. I don't have personal experience with the IPAL program but I looked into it because I had a couple subscribers ask me about it here. We have a similar program here in Canada called RAIC and honestly I think it's a great route. So many students come out of school with next to no knowledge on real world of architecture, which is one of the reasons why new interns are so undervalued. I think if I had the option when I was going to school, I would have seriously considered it.
But as for experience-- I graduated this December 2020 and am working at a smaller firm doing larger commercial projects. The people are amazing and genuinely give a f*ck about my well-being and professional development and so I have been able to rack up a lot of my arch hours really fast which has been great!! The only problem is that I know in my heart that I am better suited for designing homes and working in an environment where I have a more intimate relationship with the client. If I could just do this with my current office dynamic that would be the bee's knees :)
Sounds like you found a great firm to start your career in! Striking the perfect balance between career growth, firm culture, and fun projects is not easy, and something you will probably continue to search out throughout your career. I am finding that my idea of the perfect work situation is constantly changing. I would just try to absorb as much information as you can while you're at this firm, and when you feel like you've learned enough / collected enough hours, move on. Of course, working with residential clients is a whole new skill, but don't worry, you will have tons of time to get that experience :)
5 years ? In Italy, after we graduate from university, we have to take a 3 part exam. After that we have to enter a guild in order to profess. All the taxes are about 1000 euros (1200 dollars circa).

Does spending a longer internship means having more opportunities to learn from someone with more experience or do you get bigger learning opportunities after becoming a licensed architect because of the project scale? What are your thoughts or suggestions?
That's a great question. I touched on this near the end of my video and I have two minds about this. As an architect, I am learning much more after going through licensure. Knowing what you're looking at makes you ask the right questions and can accelerate your learning in my opinion. However, as someone who's interested in business, the advantage of interning longer is that you can try out different firms, and you can see how different firms are run. What I would not recommend is interning for a long time in one place. Hope this answers your question 😊

@@DamiLeeArch Its incredibly good and nicely explain. I work in IT industry and many moons ago was interested in architecture. What turn into stick art started snowballing into something more but then I reconsidered with the introduction to PC during my early AOL days (giving my age here lol). I always have the love and appreciation to the work, it's like a lost love being rekindled seeing your channel.

If it's your first job, i think any experience will be valuable. I would try going to a small firm so that you can see the whole range of the different processes and phases in architecture. If you can work under Principal architects that's also a plus so that you can learn about the business of architecture as well.

Hey! I worked part time as a teaching assistant in architecture school. There are some student teaching / research assistant positions in grad school, so I would check those out first. Personally I don't think I could have worked in an architecture office while doing full time school.. you will work your entire life but you only do master's once, so I think it's worth the time and $ investment!!

Hi Dami. I love your videos! I took a similar path, and this video have confirmed my decision. I have been working for a Civil and Structural company in USA for 6 years and reporting some of my experience hours to the AXP under what they call "Other settings" and I just accepted a position with an architectural / engineering company where I am expecting to complete my hours. I am wondering if I would be able to get registered in BC, once I get my license in USA. Any advice? Thank you.
Hi Nelson, I'm not sure about engineering licenses but architectural licenses are transferrable between US and Canada, you just need to do a test in that jurisdiction you'll be working in. If you find out, please drop a note here! I'm curious myself.
I too got my license to practice architecture in less than 4 years. My first employer told me old architects simply had to send a post card to the state board to be licensed. Others had obtained license to practice without school and complete 96 months of experience. Reality is a b***. Thank you for sharing your experience. Architecture school is the time one should explore the profession and the best places to work and the type of practice.

Demi I just currently finished 5th year of architecture study and I am there trying to grab some experiences of course they wont really care much like what you said I am there to just try and gain experience although I know what details I'm more into such as 'Timber' since I have been working on this material since my first year of study. Till now Timber is like my wife. So yeah just looking to find firms that deals with Timber construction!
That's cool! You're looking for architecture firms that design with timber or timber production companies?

Do you have recommendations for studying for the ARE??? Also any architecture book recommendations??
How is it being a architect I’m about to start school in a couple of months in the spring. I’ll be going to “SCAD” Savannah College of Art And Design. And I still don’t know if I want to go into the architecture field or interior design field and I know there’s gonna be a lot of math in architecture which I wasn’t that good in math in high school that was my weakest subject lol. I just wanted to get an idea of how it’s gonna be or how it id before I start school. And i have another question do you recommend a MacBook for those fields ? I was choosing between a MacBook Air 512GB or the 256GB I wasn’t sure what to get but I was leaning more towards the 512GB because it would last longer and I’ll have more space.
I have a question what do you do when your not doing architecture stuff??

Yeah work/life balance is very very important if you don't want to burn out. I actually do a fair amount of hiking / walking in nature. I try to get physically active in my free time as much as possible, but nothing relieves stress like talking shit with my friends with a glass of wine hahah ;)
Hello Dami! i'm an architecture student from Brazil. i'm really curious about the possibilities of working abroad, but countries like Canada have a much more strict licensing policy than Brazil. Would the licensing process be any different from the process you've been through?
If you're still a student, the licensing process would be the same. The process starts when you start working and register as an Intern, so I would try to work abroad soon after you graduate. Just make sure you check to see that your school credits can be used for licensure in the country that you want to work for!

yes! architects are very high in demand in Canada.
I'm less than 100 hours away from completing my hours. A bit of site review and some pesky office management hours, and I'll be done.

@@DamiLeeArch I wrote it back in 2019. COVID put a big halt on my site hours, otherwise I would have finished last year.
How did you handle being and intern, going to school and working to pay rent?
When I was going to school, I only worked part time at the office of the architecture school, not at an architecture firm. I just had to walk downstairs from my studio and I was at work, so it was less stressful. I also mentioned I took out a lot of student loans during school and had around $50k in debt when I finished school!
Could you talk a little more about what study materials you referenced for your exams? This is what has hindered me from just getting started with studying.. I am so overwhelmed by the millions of study materials that are out there and I don't know what to trust..
Hahah yeup.. There's a lot. Which exam are you taking? ExAC or ARE?

I found ArchiFlash and seeing other people’s online study notes really helpful, but the key is to just get started and study/learn as much as possible. Even if you pick a “bad” study book, you can see after taking an exam where your knowledge was lacking and move onto a different study source.

I’m looking into starting school. I ended my contract with the military when I was 30 then started in construction. I met my wife and we have one kid and my role is largely supportive. Im 35 now and want to look at completing my education and starting a field in Architecture but my wife is not convinced it will be worth my effort. What is your opinion?
Hi Walter, while I can't really comment on whether it will be worth your effort, I had a classmate in my Bachelor of Architecture who was in a very similar situation as you. Although his family obligations meant he couldn't be putting in the same amount of hours as the rest of us, his projects were great, the profs loved him, and he was always able to bring a more mature perspective to our discussions. He ended up taking the building science route, and became a consultant, rather than going through Master's and working towards his architect's license. I'm not sure which country you're located in, but the path to becoming a licensed architect is long, and I definitely made my share of personal sacrifices while I was in school (although I'm sure you can learn to manage your priorities). I've been hearing really good things about the IPAC / RAIC programs if you're in North America, where you can study and get industry experience at the same time, which might also be a great option for you.
I’ll throw in my 2 cents: I’d say most architects would tell you it’s not worth it. If architecture and design is your passion and you don’t care how much money you make, sure go for it. However, if you have an established family you need to provide for and you’re looking for a field that will pay pretty well, you’re better off doing a trade or staying in construction.
Im in the same situation . Im 30, getting out of the Navy this year and about to start my Associates in Architecture and Construction Technology. I know I wont be able to do the licensing route because I am married and have two children already but I love all of the job options available to someone with an architecture degree. Becoming a Creative Director is the final stop but I want to design and also very interested in the knowledge of building. One day I hope to work on a team of Bio Architecture to help save/reimagine the way we live.

I went to school for a total of 6 years. I'm not sure if there are 4 year accredited programs, there definitely are 5 year accredited b.arch degrees, after which you can start your internship. The IPAC program also seems like a good option for people wanting to learn industry skills during school.

Is the debt worth it? That is my biggest worry as of now, especially since I have a “mandatory” study abroad semester coming very soon.
I was just talking to my brother about this (he's five years younger and having the exact same doubts about college) It depends on many things, like what you want out of school/life, how much it's going to cost, etc. For eg. if I was going to come out of school with a $200k debt, personally I wouldn't think it's worth it, and in fact, cost was a big factor in me deciding on which school I wanted to go to. However, I'm of the mind that if you're going to invest in anything, it should be your education. Formal education can give you so much compared to what you can learn on your own, hard skills, soft skills, as well as the degree. You will pay back the debt faster than you think, just try to plan those things out while you're in school. Study abroad sounds kinda amazing..! Where will you be going?

I could never find an architect to seriously help me with internship. All I was asked about was my knowledge of cad.
Why in many countries and continents Architects become licensed automatically after graduation and in many, licenses do not apply?
That's sad. I think architectural skills are very transferable wherever you go. But for licensure, the answer is because building codes are different in every region.
@@DamiLeeArch thanks, for what I know, in most of Europe there is not licensing, just qualified to become member of professional organizations or become registered architect in some countries which process is very straight forward.
In South America, as far as I know, you receive your license (by applying) right after receiving your diploma which reads “Architect “. No B.Arch or M.Arch. There is no such thing.

I wouldn't worry about it too much.. Drawing is a skill you continue to develop over a very long time. Just keep practicing every day :)

Ugh same. I can draw but like.. Draw only by drawing what's in front of me or copying an image and stuff. I can't draw from scratch at all and I have NO creativity whatsoever I just can't find creativity in me even though I want to have it. @@woozihae Creativity is definitely something you can develop. I also think that the way schools and our culture talk about creativity is very limiting. It talks about creative people as these solo geniuses, when in reality, so much of creativity is influenced from things around us. Don't be too worried about coming up with something completely unique, start by copying the some of the masters. Copy Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Kahn, the old Italian piazzas. Really study the plans and proportions and try to understand what makes it so powerful. Then you can try to apply what you learned into your own designs.

It's too bad this profession pays so poorly. If you want to be an architect and also want to live in Vancouver or Toronto, do not expect to own a house or have any kind of retirement income. Only way to do it - own a firm with 15 to 40 people and underpay them all. Otherwise, you will not be financially secure. The cost of living in Canada's successful cities has skyrocketed and the days of some kind of professional degree giving you financial security are long gone.
Just so your young viewers looking into architecture know the score. Do not go in to this profession without meeting with an architect and having a frank discussion about it. It's not medicine, you are not guaranteed a high income. Unless you are very talented (a rarity) or well connected (another rarity) you will not be commanding high fees.

CONG JU NIM.. and I would go out and sit.. picking UP the pieces toward.. trying to find each torn pieces of papers.. and the light rain would not help me at all.. as it became soak and wet over the rain fall..
