Longest Down & Distance in Modern NFL History (3rd & 48)

  • This is, to my knowledge, the longest down and distance that any team has faced in modern NFL history. Apparently the Patriots had a 4th & 61 in 1971, but I have no idea where that clip is.

The Raiders' drives from this game:
    Punt
    Punt
    Missed FG
    Touchdown
    Punt
    Punt
    Punt
    Interception
    Punt
    Punt
    Punt (this video)
    Interception
    INT for TD
    End of Game.
The Raiders outgained the Chiefs 274-216, had more first downs (18 vs. 16) and held the ball for 34 minutes vs. 26 but those three turnovers and losing 63 yards on nine sacks (vs. 23 on three) and 11 penalties for 68 yards (vs. four for 20) just straight up killed them.

In the early days of football it wasn't uncommon to punt on first down if you were backed up near your goal line. The idea being that a safety or a fumble was more likely than a 90-ish yard scoring drive, best to let your defense try and accomplish something.

Dallas came close in a 1974 game in Saint Louis. A double reverse to Drew Pearson was blown up into a 21-yard loss and a 15-yard penalty was tacked on for clipping, giving them a 1st-and-46. I think applying an offensive penalty like that was outlawed the following year.

Then that head coach from the Jets, whose name isn't even worth remembering, came in and wrecked our offense. Losing Tony Gonzalez and Trent Green at somewhat the same time was detrimental to the Chiefs. It's so good to be back, and to see another generation of Chiefs football in action. The funniest thing is that they didn't even get any yards on 3rd down. It actually went from 3rd and 48 to 4th and 48. You'd think the defense would let you have some yards back on a quick screen or a draw, and the Raiders couldn't even do that.
But hey, at least the incompletion stopped the clock 😆

They should’ve went for it on 4th down, I’m certain with Pryor under center they would’ve converted

I love ridiculous down distances. My favorite has got to be the LA Tech (NCAA, I know) 3rd and goal...from the opposite 7 yard line...making it 3rd and 93.

Leave it to the Raiders to find themselves needing to traverse HALF the football field to convert a 1st down

I would have gone for it. First down on fourth and 48 would have went into the. NFL history books. If they didn't get it, they wouldn't have looked any worse than they already did

That last play should have been intentional grounding... Kind of dumb that they just let that slide. Should have been 4th and 58.

It’d be one thing if this was like 40+ years ago. It was a different game back then. But this like what, maybe 10 years ago?

What's insane is how the Chiefs easily won this game despite the resilience of the Raiders. Final score was 24-7.

They should have faked punt it on 4th down, that would have shown them
