    Intro music by Dylan Benson - dbproductioncom...
    I had the chance to play with a friend's new Chiappa Triple Threat at the range last week, so I took the opportunity to put together a video. It was intended for a different website, but they already have someone reviewing the gun - so I figured I might as well post it here. It's not a forgotten weapon yet, but I suspect it will be before too long. Not because the gun is bad - it's actually quite nice as far as I could tell. But it is definitely a niche market item, and way overpriced.

    I believe I know the ultimate role for this shotgun: being the best possible gun for places like the UK and Australia which have tiered licenses or separate licenses for shotguns and rifles. Basically in the UK on a shall-issue shotgun license you can have up to 3 shots loaded in the shotgun at any one time, any more than that and you have to get a Firearms License which requires, among other things, long standing club membership, a specific reason subject to great scrutiny, yadda yadda. Yeah it sucks, but the saving grace is that air rifles and shotguns can still be owned by those who aren't landed property holders (no kidding you get an FAC as the firearms license is called by default for owning rural land in most cases). So you could have a double barrel, but at the cost of the extra round which you could have in a semi or pump action. You can't have a detachable mag, so therefore this is the fastest firing shotgun you can legally own, because you can certainly jam 3 rounds in that faster than a Remington or whatever with 2+1 capability. Plus its extremely cool and seemingly extremely practical for game shooting and messing around (responsibly and legally!).

    • @veryveryintense
      @veryveryintense 10 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      WHO9119 You are welcome, I don't think even the most anti-gun state has gotten anywhere near us in terms of obnoxious gun laws, though for the rifles that are legal there is no mag size limit, but sadly semi auto is legal in .22 only :(. As I said in the previous post though, very unlikely a normal person can get a rifle without long standing club membership and the associated costs and time which I can't afford to spare. I don't have a shotgun certificate solely because I rent and another requirement is a safe bolted to a concrete wall, which few landlords would allow. If they get you guys on anything, it'll be on the requirement to have such a safe, that will seem reasonable to both factions but enforcement will require a license or registration.

      Not even close to "cheap" its in that realm of stupid money. The cost to make these is laughable comparable to the tag. For that same money you could buy just about any tactical rifle, shotgun, or handgun. Most people would rather have three excellent guns over one toy. Or spend that money on a rare collectable toy.

Less guns = less chance a criminal can get hold of one.

    Chiappa stated the purpose for a 3 barrel gun was to those who prefer a break open design but still wants the maximum number shots for waterfowl. I too want one but not at the current price in this configuration. I would like a barrel selector and possibly ejectors. From what I have seen on line the barrels always fire left, right, upper and that resets every time you open the action! If you where able to control whether to fire the top barrel first it might make a low cost drilling of sorts with a rifle barrel insert. However those change I fear would drive the price completely out of reach.

    Interesting story, my great grandfather had a custom drilling rifle made for him (three barrels). Before WWII ended, he was certain that Rommel would conquer Africa, so he had a custom dangerous game rifle made for him. If I remember correctly my grandfather told me that the top two barrels were .600 N/E, and the bottom was 12ga. Unfortunately the rifle was confiscated after the war, and that is considering that he was an officer.

    Ian, The akkar and Chiappa Triples basically exist to get around some countries gun laws prohibiting pump or semi auto's. I think if i owned this gun i would paint the high vis front-sight black everywhere but the two round surfaces (if it is a fiber optic containing sight the light only gets in at the two ends so that it wouldn't decrease visibility) because i think the gun is not bad looking except for that orange tip which makes it "cheap" looking.
    Also, the idea is nice and the trigger sounds like it's really good for follow up shots, but i think having at least two triggers would have been much better because it would have allowed you to choose for exemple the two side by side barrels with your usual buckshot and a slug in the upper barrel, or even two loads of n°9 birdshot and a third with n°8 or n°6 in case the bird is a bit farther, having the trigger work barrel per barrel removes what could have been a really nice and desirable feature.

    Load two buckshot and the third middle tube as a slug, dutch load break action and you'll be much more accurate with the slug if you load the middle tube with it since there's no offset. The takedown stock makes this gun for me, it makes the gun as short as it can legally be with three quick shots capable and no reliability issues of a semi-auto. Wax slugs and cut shells would work out of it.

    I have one of these for my girlfriend's side of the bed (I have a 590 on mine), since it's utterly simple to use and there's almost nothing to know besides point and shoot. Loaded with three Aguila Mini-buck rounds, it's a fairly soft kicker that offers three no-thought-required rounds that spread out to about the size of a softball at home defense distance (with cylinder choke) and carry about the same energy of most commercial .44 magnum loads and won't blast through a bunch of walls and cause even more problems should the worst happen and it have to be used. I got a pretty good deal on it at $700 used in perfect shape. I like it.

    Thank you once again Ian for your great reviews, body of knowledge, and just being you too :)
    As a suggestion for the wood screws, I would bore the receiving holes with fine-threaded sleeves with good scoring on the outsides for grip with the epoxy (whatever)to set them in, and use an appropriate bolt (philips/slot type) instead of the screws. Just a wee thought from my pea-brain.
    Actually it would not take much for the manufacturer to upgrade an obvious weakness like this, and it would not cost much for them to do so in my honest opinion. Does this make sense?
    Anyhow, cheers Ian! Great review as mostly always :)

      A db. barrel shotgun for personal protection is superior to a single shot shotgun. A triple barrel shotgun, for personal protection is superior to a dbl. barrel shotgun.
      It's not too heavy, is very compact, and offers 3 quick, reliable shots. More barrels would add to the weight and degrade the balance. 3 barrels is practical.

Imagining 3 spreads, slugs, or anything inbetween firing in unison would be magnificent to see, even if the recoil might be a bit tight.

    Here is a practical not gun related tip. If you find yourself in a situation, where the screw holes have just been gnawed away from the wood, get an match or two, snap it in half and stick both of the halfs in the hole. If the secrew still feels a bit loose, put some more matches in. You can do this also with chemical fillers, if you happen to have some at home.

    The reason most SxS coach guns are 20" because of the people who want to chop the stock down to a pistol grip. It gives you the extra 2" so you don't need that extra wood behind the pistol grip to make up the mandated 26". Personally, I still chopped my Stoeger Coach Gun back to 18-1/4" because I have no plans to chop the buttstock down to a pistol grip.

You may think the price is high now, but these novelty shotguns with very low import numbers will bring a lot of money in 10-20 years from collectors.

    The "third shot" in tombstone from that double barrel was the second shot from a different angle. If you look at the scene a couple of times you will see its the same dude going down in the same way in the second shot as the "third shot" but the second shot is him getting hit from the front and the "third" shot is the same guy getting hit but from the back. It's a poorly placed double take for a drama but it isn't actually the major discontinuity that some people see it as.

  • @budahbaba7856
    @budahbaba7856 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Unfortunately, adding barrels to a shotgun is a lot more complicated than just the price of extra materials. Getting the barrels to all work together properly adds a lot to the expense of the shotgun. Multi barrel shotguns are just disproportionately expensive compared to their firepower. Either the extra barrels are worth the price to you or they aren't. That is an evaluation that is probably just going to be more about personal preference over raw math. The heart wants what the heart wants! :P

    Haha this was amazing! I honestly thought having a three-barrel shotgun would be ridiculous as soon as I seen it. Adds quite a bit of weight for just one extra shot. After watching this and seeing its features though, I really want one! Not enough to put down a grand and a half though... maaaybe $700-800. Even a grand would be pushing it I think. I mean, I got my 1896 No.1 Lee Enfield for that much which is over a century of awesome while being one of the first 8000 Lee Enfields ever made in history, and my Dec 1941 M1 Rifle for less than that. Also, I once had a crappy Marlin Model 50 12 Guage bolt action Goose gun which had a 2 round detachable mag. 2+1 for around $150 as apposed to 3 for 10x that much... Yeah, definitely over priced.

      Any weapon that fires more than 1 round per trigger pull is considered a "machine gun" or select fire weapon. That means that you must register it as such (if it is even legal near you.) With that comes paperwork, a $200 tax stamp, and months of waiting. No thanks. I would rather just pull the trigger 3 times, which does not take that long.

    • @AmoebicMagicMan
      @AmoebicMagicMan 10 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      um, no. Double barrel shotguns fire both rounds at once. You are misinformed. It's if they fire more than one round IN SUCCESSION. In the future please do not post things you do not know about as fact.

    • @FNRifleman
      @FNRifleman 10 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      AmoebicMagician SOME Double-barreled shotguns can fire both barrels at one time. It has to be a model with two triggers and two hammers. most modern double-barreled shotguns have one mechanical trigger that fires each barrel one at a time.

    • @crazyfvck
      @crazyfvck 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      AmoebicMagician NO. Either they have one trigger that has to be pulled twice to fire both barrels, or they have 2 triggers that fire each barrel individually. You could pull both triggers at once in the case of a double trigger gun, but that is just stupid. I've done it before, and it is an easy way to take some skin off of your fingers. The main problem is the offset of the two triggers. If they were lined up next to each other it would be different, but that is not done on purpose.

    • @crazyfvck
      @crazyfvck 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gen Scinmore That's a good point about the slam-fire.. I think they just let that slide. Only a select few shotguns are capable of that, with the most common being the Winchester model 1897. I think the other older models capable of slam-firing were only able to do so in their military version, though obviously those are available for purchase now by civilians.
