Kevin interviews acclaimed comic artist Joe Quinones about Batdance, the sample-laden jam session Prince produced for the 1989 Batman film. The video is every bit as goofy and mystifying as the song, but Prince's energy and confidence holds everything together, as you'd expect.
So please, spend some time on this DARK NIGHT and enjoy these two JOKERS going to BAT for this BATSHIT music video.

The 99¢ sticker over R. Kelly's face is a great touch
The video at the time was considered by critics as getting the duality of Batman and Joker better than the movie did.
The Batman Prince soundtrack had 9 songs only 3 are in the movie (party man/Trust/Scandalous).
The choreography was done by Paula Abdul.
The video was filmed on the set of the bat cave.
As for song popularity; it was used as a marketing tool to sell Prince albums and movie tickets; thus the heavy rotation.
Prince thematically told the Batman story via music in those 9 tracks.
The partyman video tells the story of the joker.
Prince did THE WHOLE soundtrack to the film. 6 of the 9 songs from the soundtrack are in the film.
I think it's 5 songs out 9: Batdance, Scandalous, Partyman, Electric Chair and The Future.
Here's a bit of history behind Prince's involvement in the whole BATMAN (1989) phenomenom. The theme from the Adam West BATMAN TV show was the first song Prince learned on piano. When Jack Nicholson and Tim Burton were making the BATMAN film, they actually played Prince's BABY I'M A STAR and 1999 on set. It was Jack Nicholson's idea to get Prince involved with the film since he liked his music. They wanted to get his permission to use his songs. Tim invited Prince to London to watch as they were filming Batman. Prince is so excited about the film, he decided to record an whole album's worth of music for the film. Some of the songs that ended up on the soundtrack were reworkings of songs that Prince had in his vault. Others were new songs he recorded specifically for the soundtrack. Allegedly, there was also an idea of having both Prince and Michael Jackson on the soundtrack. Prince doing the Joker songs while Michael would do the Batman songs. But, Michael was still in the middle of his BAD WORLD TOUR. Therefore, Prince ended up recording the whole soundtrack. The soundtrack was a MAJOR HIT when it was released in June 1989. BATDANCE became Prince's final #1 song of the 80's. It held that spot for about 3 weeks. The soundtrack has sold 11M units. It did received mixed reviews from die-hard Prince supporters. I, for one, still love the album. Yes! I am a MAJOR Prince supporter. I have ALL of his official releases (over 40 studio albums as well as his live albums). The music video for BATDANCE premiered on MTV in it's entirety and was aired that way for quite sometime. It was also aired in it's entirety on BET, VH-1, etc. There really was no edited version of that video. There was, however, an edited version for radio. But, the song was even played in its entirety on radio as well. There's another Frank Miller reference in the BATDANCE video. One of the Vicki Vale lookalikes is wearing a shirt that says "All This and Brains, Too". That is a reference to the female anchor in Miller's "DARK KNIGHT RETURNS" graphic novel and animated film adaptation. She is seen wearing a shirt that says "All this and brains, too".
The electric chair part is a legitimate song from the original Batman 1989 Prince soundtrack. The track is called 'electric chair' the most important thing to note is the batdance is actually a video that is a amalgamation of his songs from the album all into one video.
One song you did miss in particular is the song 'The Future' which in itself is a very good song on the album as well.
Anyways, fantastic video guys! I was hoping that you guys would do a video on this music video in particular, not very many people have reacted or talked about this music video on TH-cam. 😁👍
Thanks, Clown "Prince!"
Also, the guitar solo on "Electric Chair" fucking RIPS.
The Future is such a bop. Such a goddamn banger.
This song was a smash hit and was played on MTV every hour for at least 2 weeks (And was their number 1 video at least once or twice). More of a smash hit from being attached to the most anticipated movie in years. The Batman Prince soundtrack is owned by WB Prince doesn't own the music at all. That was the price of getting the soundtrack and huge cash upfront. It's the only music of his that he created that he doesn't own the rights to. The original concept of the album was Michael Jackson side A, Prince side B-then WB came to their senses and thought why promote MJ? When they could promote their own artist Prince.
I was a senior in high school.. Batman and Prince were hugely popular and this played all the time on the radio and MTV and yes it was often cut down. A lot of songs had extended versions. You have to remember there wasn’t a ton of cgi at that time. A lot music videos were props. The music video actually worked extremely well with the vibe of the movie.
It was a big hit.
thank you for discussing this! Yes! The electric chair part does seem to be squeezed in there. So many ideas jammed in that video!
He actually did the entire soundtrack
We live in a Vidnight Society
(For real these are super fun, I love hearing about different weird bits of pop culture every episode)
I was fourteen when this video came out, and yes it was a huge hit, both on MTV and on the radio. It came on MTV several times a day, uncut, and I watched it every time I could. The soundtrack album wasn't that great (for Prince), but somehow somehow "Batdance" -- which is a collection of all the songs from the soundtrack -- is awesome.
Prince the greatest artist ever
(popular music)
YESSS!
Yes it was very popular and topped the charts for weeks at that time
No they played it in full ..and prince won a award
This is delightful.
Prince loved this video and was ALL IN on the concept. He didn’t feel like he was selling out at all. Prince was a HUGE Batman fan.
"It's the end of the semester and I've got this performance piece, can you show up?"
Boy, I've been there. Art school nerds unite.
No Neil this time but I'm so happy to see another vidnight society so hell yes. I always love seeing these and being like aright the title is such and such by so and so, time to watch that video so I'll have at least some concept of what they're talking about. And boy I was not disappointed by this one.
I downloaded a bunch of Prince songs from spotify and found myself disappointed by a bunch of them so far. I haven't taken the time to really sit and listen through all the ones I downloaded but naturally there were a few gems, too. I'll have to see if this happened to be in the lot I'd grabbed or otherwise get it because it's damn good.
Why would you be disappointed by Prince songs? They're all gems!
Well, according to me, but you have your own opinions and I respect that 👍☮️✌️
What about
'Hey Ducky, stick the 7 inch in the computer.'
1st of all prince was A Batman fan When he was 6 years old he learned how to play the Batman theme on the piano This was a childhood dream of Princes Bat dance was a hit He sold 40 million worldwide he received a world music award It almost Sold more than Purple rain It was a whole album 7 or 8 song It is the quintessential soundtrack of The Batman movies
this is so obscure....
It's a toss up between this, Wild Wild West and Men In Black gimmick songs
This was the #1 selling album in the US for several weeks. Not obscure.
He did a full album (Batman) for the movie. In Just One week . J. Nicholson wanted him ti do the soundtrack
I hope we get a Batdance for Matt Reeves' The Batman with sampled clips of Paul Dano and Robert Pattinson
Lol Joe your *BATMAN STUFF* gesture!
5:09 Neil, the gauntlet has been thrown down.
5:13 SOmbody needs to hurry up and edit that shit together so I can watch it.
I called it on an earlier video!
mtv showed all of it for you like you have no f.. idea..... this was no 1 hit and played 2 to 3 times per hour
MTV banned the video ..well the end of it when the dichotomy kills himself
MTV didn't ban the video, it just showed a "radio edit" version of the video. At least at first.
who else would like to see a story of Prince's character Gemini?
4:47 lmfao nice
