The locomotives standing at Luni Junction are still listed as In Service in the IRFCA database. However, upon closer inspection, it becomes evident that their traction motors, controls, and other essential components have been removed. Additionally, all doors and windows of the locomotive pilot cabins have been permanently welded shut. This strongly indicates that the railway may soon send these locomotives for scrapping.
Questions:- What do Indian Railways do with the old engines after their service period is over?
Answer:- Locomotives that are involved in accidents and are beyond repair are dismantled. The usable machinery is salvaged and used as spares for working locomotives of that class or locomotives that are similar to the damaged locomotive. The metal is usually sold to scrap dealers.
Locomotives that are over aged and are not profitable enough to be repaired and put back to work are also dismantled in their respective home sheds and the machinery is used as spares.
Sometimes these locomotives may be sent to be preserved as museum exhibits and sent to NRMs and RRMs.
A locomotive for scrap will usually only fetch the price for it's metal, because the scrap dealer isn't obviously going to send his kids to school in it.
