I think I prefer the remake. I think it might be the most fun movie of the series, as the characters are basically cartoon characters and it is the only film of the series aside from Part 7, when I'm rooting for Jason. The other films, I am either bored, or genuinely don't want the characters to die. Part 1 is one of those boring films. In films like Part 2, 4, and 6 (Star Trek numbers lol) I feel that they do have a structure or character stories going on that help us to get invested before they are inevitably killed. Part 1 has nothing but walking around and dying for like 40 minutes straight. It could have been a great short film, but that wouldn't make money, so they couldn't make it one. However, Betsy Palmer, Tom Savini, Harry Manfredini, and the world building for the original film is excellent and really set the series for success later on.
@@HauntedBlowfish I'm sorry for being so stubborn, but I just feel 1931 and 1979 are the ones you should do because 1. They are both made by Universal. 2. They are both based on the Dracula stage play in a way, with their lead actors playing Dracula on stage too.
most reviewers of the F13 series take a serious dump on the original, but I love it for whatever reason. The whole third act is pretty much Pam chasing Alice around the camp and I feel like it has a lot of good tension that doesn't get enough credit.
It has grown on me over the years, I did use to be more of a detractor myself. I think the combination of no Jason as the killer (which is unfair and isn't the film's fault at all, that's a hindsight issue) and the movie being a little rougher around the edges are the main reasons it's relatively overlooked. Then again, depending on your preferences, the film being less polished and cheaper may well be a positive when it comes to horror!
F13- the one that started it all. Rough around the edges but the atmosphere it pulls you into, the kills, Pamela, the setting, idk it all works for me. F1309- a near perfect blend of the first 3 films, besides the excessive nudity, i freaking dig this one. By far the scariest portrayal of Jason and the wat it smartly puts the more supernatural elements into a realistic way is clever. Kills are brutal, acting is fine for the era and sadly its the final film we ever got in the franchise😢
@@HauntedBlowfish oh bummer, I thought it'd be interesting to see what child Jason might have been like. Not sure if that was the direction they were gonna go in though
That is on my longlist of Originals vs Remakes I'd like to cover (though it is a very long list haha). It must be over a decade since I've seen either version. I definitely preferred the Japanese one back then, would be interesting to see if my opinions changed.
Definitely give them another shot, I like the remake more since it improved on everything of the Japanese version (except the tv scene at the end, that one terrified me haha) in my opinion, but I respect the og (it’s free on TH-cam in 4K with subtitles btw)
The 09 remake is not that bad. It is basically a Best Of of the first 3 or 4 movies. It is competently made and the portrayal of Jason is fitting for the character. However, as a fan of the franchise, as someone who owns the film series on DVD or BR, as someone for whom the movies are perfect for kicking back on a hot summer night, turning the brain off and enjoying a mindless slasher it is a one and done deal. It just offered absolutely nothing new, except of what to expect from Friday the 13th when you come new into the franchise.
That's a fair assessment. It does lack the 'comforting' 80s vibe of the original run of films which makes for a different, more grimy experience, but personally this version of Jason and the kills do lure me back in every now and then.
I'll say the remake has grown on me over time. I can see the merits of Derek Mears' Jason as an intimidating yet clever survivalist and the faster pace being features. My main issue is the obnoxious cast of characters. The franchise cut it's teeth on thinly written characters, however they were still likable, they still seemed to have camaraderie as ensemble casts. The worst movies in the Friday franchise eschew that likability for annoying archetypes and the remake falls right into that trap. The 00s horror movies loved that corny frat bro humor 🙄
Oh absolutely, 'frat bro humor' is a great way to describe it, it really does bring down the movies of that time. Too cheap, too lazy and very annoying lol
Umm, honestly I've never been a big fan. The franchise kinda blurs together for me for the most part. Out of these two, I have to go with the remake being the better film.
I know what you mean. When I first watched the series, I must've watch parts 3-8 in a matter of days, just one long hazy memory of people running past trees and occasionally getting undressed or un-alived lol. Since then I don't marathon them, just watch one or two here and there, helps keep them a bit more distinct.
That's horrible that she had to deal with a stalker.
Yeah. As per usual, reality is sadly more terrifying than the movies.
8:04 and have a critic endanger your life and privacy because he was a petulant child.
Indeed, awful behaviour!
I didn't know he did the bad news bears? I haven't seen that in forever.
Well, not the bad news bears itself, he just did the ripoffs lol
@@HauntedBlowfish Ohh my bad. I misunderstood
1:20 I just choked on my apple. Brilliant!
You're welcome! (for the near death experience hahaha)
Funny, I watched Friday Part 2 and 4 last week. I always put a couple of these films on when it gets hot in the summer. Great video as always!
Oh yes they are the perfect horror movies for a lazy summer evening. Tempted to stick another one of them on right now honestly haha
@@HauntedBlowfish Watch In a Violent Nature! I watched it in between two Friday films. An ideal way to prepare and unwind from it.
Ah good shout. The trailer for that did grab my attention
Part 2 and 4 are so good.
i always love your added comedy. it's such a lovely touch when talkin about so much spraying blood
Haha, I'm sure Savini wouldn't want it any other way
Another great video HB, thank you.
Any chance you'll consider doing nightmare on elm Street for a future Originals vs Remakes?
Thank you :) And I think Elm Street original vs remake is inevitable somewhere down the line haha

Thanks for watching and commenting. I don't have much to add here, as I pretty much agree on all points!
Lol at wandering around like a lost npc
God bless Crazy Ralph
Awesome!! Now please do Dracula 1931 vs 1979!!
Thanks, soon!

Since were getting another Nosferatu film (which acc looks fantastic) maybe that can be on the que for Originals vs Remakes 🤔

Always loved it. I get why people are put off on first viewing but idc, was hooked from the get go with this series
I'm not a huge fan of it. I don't find it as scary as part 2 or 4, but it does have some aspects that set the series up really well.

Well said across the board.
He did do a good Jason. And i like that he was smart and crafty, instead of another relentless lug.
Agreed, much more interesting to watch and ultimately more scary too.
original, better characters, and it's got a charm to it. though I prefer the freddy films over jason
Fair reasonings. I also typically gravitated towards the Elm Street movies other these, Freddy just allowed for more variety and creativity
Are you going to watch the upcoming Camp Crystal Lake?
I think that's been cancelled now as well? I could be wrong, it is genuinely hard to keep up with all the projects coming and going hahaha
