Universal's Forgotten Wolf-Woman Movie
Following in the gender-swapping shoes of The Bride of Frankenstein and Dracula's Daughter, She-Wolf of London (1946) acts as a female-led counterpart to Universal's popular Wolf Man character.
The film is full of grisly gaslighting in grand mansions and suspense in foggy London parks, but does it deliver the monster action that audiences craved at the time?

Released in the year 2000, Possessed features James Bond star Timothy Dalton as a priest tasked with performing the only exorcism sanctioned by the Catholic Church on American soil. It is based on the alleged real event, which also served as the direct inspiration for The Exorcist. But how does Possesed compare against that classic horror, and does the 'real' nature of the story ring true?

Before director Tod Browning and star Bela Lugosi would partner up on two of the most distinctive horror films of the 1930s (Dracula, and Mark of the Vampire), they collaborated on a much lesser-known movie: an old-dark-house mystery released in 1929, titled The 13th Chair. Nice video - some variations - this classical period did have a transforming ape-woman franchise starring Acquanetta (tho I think she's more a Moreau-style ape reverting to original form) - and there's a 1976 Italian film, Legend of Wolf Woman, that's fairly similar to this 46 film in premise, but way more satisfying in gruesome thrills - then the female-centered werewolf movie came into its own IMO when it started using lycanthropy to examine adolescence and the onset of adulthood, as in Company of Wolves and Ginger Snaps

    5:16 to be fair, that was a *great* pratfall. For like...a one-off joke or a mid movie kill. As the climactic death of the villain, boy that sure is a choice! I guess that's one way to keep the audience from being worried the villain is an actual threat: oh phew, she can be defeated by a flight of stairs! It so often feels like Universal horror movies - even the good ones - all had some fella looking over everyone's shoulder going "okay now lets make sure this isn't TOO scary"

    • @HauntedBlowfish
      @HauntedBlowfish 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Agreed, the stunt is good but just a little anticlimactic in context. A fitting end for a Renfield type, but not a Dracula, so to speak. True about Universal's films holding back a little, especially in that wartime/post-war era. Even their non-horrors, like the Sherlock films always ending with a clunky rousing monologues to put you at ease after all the mystery and villainy.
