My great-grand-uncle (great-grandfather's brother) was among the 140 casualties of USS Hornet CV-8. His loss is still felt extremely hard by my family, and I am beyond proud of his service. My grandfather is named after him, so this video honestly made me tear up. You did a great service to the sinking of my great-grand-uncle and his fellow sailors and airmen. Thank you, Animarchy.

Loved the buildup you gave to my Marines. We're smug assholes like that. Technically, the USMC isn't its own branch of the service, it was in WWII and still is a part of the Navy. That's why the Army and Navy both saw five-star flag officers from the conflict, but none from the Marines being subservient to the Navy. Then there's the fact that the USMC wingnuts became a carrier presence later in the war which eventually evolved into our modern-day MEFs (Marine Expeditionary Forces).
Marines are simply too crazy to be their own branch. They already hand out asskickings so serious that even the devil has to look twice... Imagine what these crayon eating madlads would do if they weren't under navy rule 🤣
What do you mean by "was" part of the Navy. You're still Dept. Of Navy, and fall under the Secretary of the Navy. I swear do I need to draw the organization chart in canyon again. Hey stop eating those.

1:08:17 The Japanese actually took their time before sinking the Hornet as one of the destroyers Akigumo was trying to take a picture of her. It was the ship responsible for the Doolittle Raid after all and the destroyer's captain wanted the moment of her sinking on record to submit to the admiralty. But because it was too dark for cameras to be of any use, she pointed her search lights at the Hornet so that a crewman could draw a sketch of the stricken carrier. The other ships in the surface group however weren't aware of what Akigumo was trying to do, so they were all watching in horror as this one destroyer was swinging her lights around in what could only be described as an open invitation for any Americans still in the area to shoot at her. One of the accompanying destroyer even frantically signaled to her "WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING!? TURN YOUR LIGHTS OFF!!".
21:43 I was flying with a former Marine last month for my private pilot cert & about halfway through our training we got into some pretty thick weather with 0 visibility. Of course being new to this situation I was tense but before I could think too much more about it my instructor broke out into the marine hymn on repeat for the entire duration until we finally got visibility of the field. There’s something about that hymn damnit- it bled the fear right out of me.
Yorktown was not sunk by aircraft torpedoes. She survived the night, and was under tow when a Japanese submarine hit her with a volley of torpedoes. One broke the destroyer Hammond (I think) in half, and three more hit Yorktown, finally inflicting mortal damage. She was, however, still out of the fight from the aerial torpedo hits.
Yeah that’s true. But similar to Hornet. The Japanese fleet began closing and the submarine screen wasn’t there by accident. She was pretty much doomed due to the air attack. It’s one of those narrative choices (similar to extra history) where the flow of the story works better if I pivot straight to Hiryu. Because It doesn’t have same emotional weight. That said. I have pinned your comment to clarify that. And like I always say. Subscribe here for fun educational content told narratively. For the deep breakdowns. Head on over to the GOAT Drachinifel.
Also. Thanks for taking the time and effort to write this up. My historically anal fans (like me) are what keep me honest and make me strive to do better. I wouldn’t do this without you guys.
@@AnimarchyHistory I definitely appreciate all the hard work you put into making these videos! They are very informative and entertaining. I’m a history nerd so this stuff just is just always interesting to me, but for those who aren’t as keen, the fun narrative you add is very attention grabbing and epic! I will say however that I feel Yorktown’s sinking carried the same emotional weight, if not more. Which is what irks me about the midway movie. They gave a good bit of screen time to the Hiryu sinking, but Yorktown’s they paid no mind to really. It was agreed (by Buckmaster & Fletcher) that they would attempt to save Yorkie since she so stubbornly refused to sink. The night after the battle passed and she was still found afloat, there was still two men aboard actually, even after the men had abandoned ship. One fired off a machine gun to signal to the sole nearby destroyer that they were still alive. One ended up passing away after being saved, the other survived. It was decided that around roughly thirty officers and one hundred and forty men, would go back into Yorktown and try to save her. A destroyer screen made up of five destroyers stayed in the area to protect Yorkie, while the destroyer Hammann provided the carrier with auxiliary power. The efforts to save her looked good, the ships list was being reversed, a good amount of water taken on had been removed. Honestly, there was shock, Yorkie was going to be saved… well until I-168 snuck through the screen, it is believed she wasn’t spotted because of all the debris in the water near the Yorktown. The escorts spotted the torpedos fired and tried to shoot them, to cause them to explode on route, but it was too late. Hammann was snapped in half by a torpedo, Yorkie took two hits, and what is believed to be a depth charge from Hammann went off and killed some of both crews. The final torpedo missed but the damage had been done. The escorts tried looking for the enemy sub with no luck, the tug detached from Yorkie, and now it became a rescue effort for the crews. Though while they expected a quick sinking, the Yorktown still stubbornly fought till the end, not sinking for another 9-10 hrs after being hit by the torpedos from the Japanese sub. As she finally listed to port, the various crews on nearby ships could see the holes the torpedos punched into Yorkie, but Buckmaster’s flag that you mentioned in your video that stood so tall once before, still did as the ship began the final process of sinking. During the sinking, all ships nearby half-mast their colors in salute, all the men topside removed their caps and came to attention. It was reported that there was no dry eyes that day, and I can understand, as someone who found and read about the story, and the song azur lane released for Yorktown, found me tearing up as well. As she finally began to slip beneath the waves, two PBY’s that flew overhead, dipped their wings in a final salute. To those who witnessed the sinking, they said she went out quietly and with enormous dignity, with one even putting “like the great lady, she was”. Now I want to make clear, this isn’t me getting onto you about this. This two (potentially three 👀) part series on Enterprise was fantastic, I even recommended the videos to some of my friends. I just am always big on giving Yorktown the recognition she deserves and helping tell part of the story that no one usually hears about. If there is anything I could ask for, is that in the future, that Yorktown (CV-5), gets a video. You have a great narration style and I feel you’d do her story and sinking justice. I know you covered a lot of what Yorkie did in this two (potentially three 👀) part series but it’s still a suggestion I’d like to offer. Regardless, thank you for everything you do man. I started watching your videos from the Bismarck release and each video I’ve gotten to watch, has taught me some things I didn’t know before, even though I study this part of history extensively. Just goes to show that there is always something new to learn. Also, as an American, it always makes me happy to see people from outside the US show so much passion about our ships and wanting to tell their stories. You definitely deserve way more subscribers than you have now, and I look forward to seeing more uploads!
To let you know just how badass the US Marines were (and still are), the 2nd Marine Division and only the 2nd Division went ashore for the Battle of Tarawa. Tarawa was a garrison, so heavily fortified that a Japanese admiral said the US couldn't take it in 100 years with a million men. The 2nd US Marine Division took Tarawa in 3 days.
When you consider that Japan graduated AT BEST 100 trained pilots a year up to 1943 the combined loss of Coral Sea and Midway the IJN lost effectively 5 years worth of trained pilots. That is a loss you cannot replace in a short time. We were still gearing up, by the end of the war we trained almost 16,000 carrier pilots.
“Retribution is at hand! It is our strength! Let fury guide your weapons! Let vengeance be your song!” “I am the Gray Ghost; and America’s enemies shall fall!”
You've taken history, then given it the epicness of Two Steps From Hell. This just keeps getting better and better. You know the crap hits the fan when Enterprise goes full Sovereign Class mode.
Yamaguchi's self-sacrifice was helpful as it subtracted a competent warrior. During the U.S. Civil War Stonewall Jackson observed a group of his troops allowing an especially brave Union soldier to retreat from an engagement without firing. He asked his troops why they weren't firing at the retreating soldier. His men answered that they were honoring a brave man. Jackson replied "I don't want them brave. I want them dead."
From what I've read of him, yamiguchi was aware the war was unwinnable, and I bet doing the math on the carrier loss... maybe he didn't want to stick around and see the inevitable.
58:00 I have a great Uncle who was the CAG of Hornet's air group and was awarded a Navy Cross for this action. My interest in naval history in part stems from being told of how he needed to come home in Marine fatigues as his carrier went down while he was away.
5:15 - 'Long Lance' was the name for the super heavy 24" Type 93 torpedo used by I.J.N. cruisers and destroyers. Japanese carrier aircraft employed the smaller and lighter 17.7" Type 91 aerial torpedo.

I personally would find it interesting too see a anime/Manga from azur lane, in which you see the complete Pacific war, but like really war. No kansen during the game or anime really dies, Yorktown is only seen being wounded during the anime. I mean it would bring so much emotion on the screen, when during the battle of the coral see Lexington is hit and later sinks, when at Midway enterprise and hornet go out and finish of hiryu, after Yorktown is wounded and after the battle they feel like they have won and the 3 of them will come home, but when Hammann helps Yorktown you see I-168 fire torpedoes at them both sinking them... Later during savo-island when enterprise and the other USN kansen are forced too leave hornet behind, mortally wounded she is forced just too float there and waiting too sink, when she hears the Japanese kansen coming unable too do anything she is finished off by a salvo of torpedoes. The grief ant the furry of enterprise... After losing her big sister, the one voice she always listened too, she now lost both of them. Later on when the new Essex class comes into service and she feels like she is seeing a ghost when she first meets hornet and Yorktown (cv-10 and cv-12) , but even when the new carriers adore enterprise the only thing she can think when looking at them is "your not Yorktown, your not hornet, your not my sister's". And when the war is over you see Saratoga and enterprise stand on the cliff and you here Saratoga say "I miss Lexington, I miss Yorktown... I miss them all" and enterprise says " yes...me too. But wherever they are they will be waiting for us and we will see them again." . I don't know why but it would be so cool too see this, it would be a show/Comic with awesome battels and deep emotions and it would be my absolute favorite.
@@SeveralWeezelsInaTrenchcoat yes! Bismarck and Eugen vs. Hood and price of Wales, would be a Epic fight and Rodney later on sinking Bismarck with the help of the other royal Navy kansen.
While im sure we would enjoy it for the other viewers it would become not as popular with the knowing how most battles are gonna end and how dark the story will become. Remember dark stories are hard to do properly and good to great ones are even rearer.
Imagine Northampton trying to save Hornet by towing her and then a torpedo salvo finishes Hornet. Northampton looks around wondering her load was suddenly becoming lighter...only to find out in her horror that Hornet was already sinking. Then later on, Enty knows what Northampton did to her sister. So in the following battle (the battle of Rennell island), Northampton's sister, Chicago, was heavily damaged and had to be towed away. But the IJN was determined to sink her. So Enty provided air cover on Chicago and helped her as much as she could in returning the favor to Northampton. But it wasn't enough...Chicago would later sink on that day. If azur lane had some sort of a deeper storyline and basing on historical facts, it would be heartbreaking.
Also for part 3 when Enterprise returns from refit I think AC/DC Back in Black or Thunderstruck would fit if I knew it wouldn't get copyright immediately. As for this video my only nit pick was the lack of mention that Yorktown was going to be saved till she was torpedoed by I-168. The video makes it seem Yorktown was sunk by air attack rather than crippled and later sunk by sub launched torpedoes. Other then that another great video and I can't wait for the next part.

As a fifty something American male, I cannot fully express the pride that fills my heart listening to what amounts to so many grown up bedtime stories about the Pacific War. The story of that war from the American perspective is just so amazing, from the disaster at Pearl Harbor to the brilliance of the Doolittle Raid causing the Japanese to overreact, the genius of our code breakers, Nimitz, Fletcher, Spruance, saving Port Morisbey at Coral Sea, Yorktown's hasty repair, vengeance at Midway, Nautalis, Arashi, McCluskey, Dick Best, then Guadalcanal. There's just one story of competent bravery after another. Of course I've read many books on the topic and this might be the most entertaining telling of the story I've heard. More than once you had me humming along or better yet, pumping a fist. What a story!
Nagumo gets shit on a lot, but he did very much learn from midway, as the captain of amatsukaze (and author of 'japanese destroyer captain') said. The moment he saw any american recon aircraft at Santa Cruz, nagumo instantly ordered a full 180° turn. And when he got spotted again, he oredered it a 2nd time. According to amtsukazes captain, who was very fond of nagumo, he had learned after midway that aircraft carrier combat isnt about debatting about the right move. Its about split second decicions and fast actions.

God knows Halsey tried his damned to so. I still feel we as a nation both failed and dishonored her by allowing her to be scrapped. We betrayed the trust she had in us to protect her as she had so valiantly protected us.

I quickly became obsessed with the history of all ships to carry the name and collected any research and model kits and materials to build the ships to show the history of the Enterprise from 1587 w/ Francis Drake to the American revolution to WW2 to CVN65 to the Shuttle to the Starships of the future. Tied into your program, I just received an item I've wanted for decades: the big 1/350 scale kit of the Enterprise CV-6! I got her on Valentines Day. I Love Kit indeed! The IJN was shocked when the Enterprise would return, having believed to sunk her 3 times over. Now she was back again. A Grey Ghost sailing over the horizon bringing Hell with her.
A mention of the coast watchers would be appropriate, they played a important role in US carrier warfare and deserve to be remembered. Relaying information about Japanese ship and aircraft movements, from Japanese occupied islands at the risk of a horrible death if captured.
Naval battles like these ones are really fascinating. On one hand, its frightening that they were on ships so there was no way out, no terrain that would obscure them, to have an easy ambush or a chokepoint... On the other hand it was the fairest type of battle. No one was defending or attacking a position, there were out to get at eachothers throats on the levelest playing field possible. No pun intended.
I also loved the whole description of the Marines. I’m positive that all Marines would get it, but that whole segment is nothing but love ❤️ If I may get exceptionally nerdy for a moment, I’ve often likened the Marines to the Blood Angels Death Company from 40k. They’re absolutely terrifying, ruthlessly effective, but more than anything, I’m just glad they’re on our side.
1:00:50 You are wrong. During WW2, there was no airplane able to carry a 24in "long lance" torpedo. These were limited only to surface ships and their torpedo tubes. Airplanes used much smaller torpedoes.

Just a side note, the light carrier that was with Amatsukaze and Tokitsukaze during the battle of the South Pacific wasn't Ryuho, but Ryujo. I know, their names are similar, but Ryujo is a veteran ship from the early stages of the Second Sino-Japanese war and fought alongside Akagi while she still had 3 flight decks. Ryuho is a carrier modified from a submarine support vessel, much like Shoho and Zuiho (notice the similarity in names) and is one of the few ships to survive the war. I know it's kind of nitpicky, but I just want to make sure they both get the honor and notice they each deserve.
The type 93 "long lance" torpedo was ship launched. It was not used by the Japanese torpedo bombers. They probably used the type 91 aerial torpedo. At least according to the Wikipedia article.

The Japanese actually took their time before sinking the Hornet as one of the destroyers Akigumo was trying to take a picture of her.
Akigumo: IT'S THE DOOLITTLE RAIDER LAUNCHER, I WANNA PICTURE & SKETCH HER!!

I was flying with a former Marine last month for my private pilot cert & about halfway through our training we got into some pretty thick weather with 0 visibility.
Yorktown possibly was already sinking,
a submarine attack was a overkill
@@yoseipilot overkill? So was the pummelling of Bismarck strictly speaking. But I suppose in the heat of battle overkill is considered merely prudent.

Why limiting it to only to the Pacific? Let's do all theatres of the war at sea! Atlantic, Mediterranean, all of them!

It's also why I have issues with Nimitz and King reassigning Fletcher after Saratoga was torpedoed by I-26.
Necause he earned it. His flaw was well known only covered by talented staff till Midway. Midway was just too much for them to cover

1:10:30: yeah the Sakura Empire has no idea what it has just unleashed, they've pushed the Grey Ghost over the edge and they've let Code G out
The “wrong Enterprise, wrong war” moment was beautiful, but as a fellow Aussie, nothing was better than 17:10 ❤
Yesssss! That was tirpitz about time I can’t wait 👀
I think this is your best of the best video so far.
Oh God the Marine call up!!! I WAS SNOTTING BEER OUTTA MY NOSE!!!!! Luckily there was enough crayolas to go around!
They took her sisters...
She took their entire navy.
I typically don't go for this level of goofiness in historical videos, but this one is really good. Even the goofy parts.
The IJN was shocked when the Enterprise would return, having believed to sunk her 3 times over. Now she was back again. A Grey Ghost sailing over the horizon bringing Hell with her.
"bringing Hell with her"
Grumman F6F Hellcats
This is one of the reasons why she was called The Grey Ghost
That makes 7 US fleet carriers sunk, between Enterprise and Yorktown alone!
Can't wait for part 3.
I’m positive that all Marines would get it, but that whole segment is nothing but love ❤️
If I may get exceptionally nerdy for a moment, I’ve often likened the Marines to the Blood Angels Death Company from 40k. They’re absolutely terrifying, ruthlessly effective, but more than anything, I’m just glad they’re on our side.
I would like to point out that Marines held Henderson Field with equipment from the last World War.
So thats springfields and Maxims...
Nothing beats the Maxim.
I know with these videos it takes time, especially with these being a masterpiece. But damn it all, that part 3 is needed.
1:04:15 reminds me of the USS Texas on Dday both were crazy.
What, you mean flooding half the ship to shoot farther?
@@blademaster2390 while that sounds cooler in reality it was just the torpedo bulges.
Parts one and two, excellent coverage and presentation.
Great narration, with personality!! Makes it fun to watch!!
FUCK YEAH! SCHOOLS CLOSED *AND* WE GET PART 2!!!
Not for me :(
1:00:50 You are wrong. During WW2, there was no airplane able to carry a 24in "long lance" torpedo. These were limited only to surface ships and their torpedo tubes. Airplanes used much smaller torpedoes.
the IJN aerial torpedo was the adaptation of the long lance to be airdroped by planes.
soo while tecnically not THE long lance(type 93 torpedo), its A long lance.(type 91 aerial torpedo)
literally me when i saw the BBC clip
"oh its their mating dance"
next thing i heard
"many misinterpret it for a mating ritual"
All hail the Queen.
41:25 The guy running the camera was killed when that bomb hit. He was decapitated.
And as for the ending, in the words of Optimus Prime, "I'LL TAKE YOU ALL ON!!!!"
ONE SHALL STAND, ONE SHALL FALL!
Really ? how do you know ? I'm just amazed that you know that, like, how ??
@@mawile3037That the cameraman was killed? It's in three of my late dad's books. The cameraman got his head chopped off when that bomb landed: the camera jolts slightly at the blast, then doesn't move. He was killed instantly.
@@benlaskowski357 One detail also about this battle, another bomb hit one of the 5 inch battery that was shooting, the were founded like statues... they died immediately... to the veterans that were interview in the History channel battle 360 Enterprise they confirmed that the men of that 5 inch battery were like statues...
This is a really well worded an orchestrated series, I am a big history buff on World War II, I know how it ends but you had me on the edge of the seat lol, I drive semi so I really do appreciate these nice long videos so I can put them on the Bluetooth speaker and set my phone down and drive
youtube didnt send me a notification wtf youtube!!!
aaaanyways, i have been waiting for this!
This video is the best Marine Corps moto I've ever seen! I'm not even in the Corps and you got me wanting to pray to St. Chesty of Guadalcanal and start speaking in unintelligible grunts! YUT!
I have been trying to find this version of all along the watchtower but can't find it
That rage and grief filled scream always gets me...
