- This is the complete 2017 Zulu Parade. Zulu benefitted this year from warm, Spring like, weather; tee shirt/no coats or sweaters required, but over cast with clouds keeping the day from getting too hot. The Witch Doctor did his job! 2017 King Zulu, Adonis C. Expose and his Krewe rolled on time and looked real pretty! His Queen, Donna M. Glapion was simply beautiful and radiant!!! Congratulations on a parade for the history books!

In the 1950's Zulu member's road on little horse or mule drawn wagons with hay .......You chased them....you searched them down ....There was no set route.......I remember catching up with a small wagon(float) at N. Claiborne and Esplanade heading towards N. Galvez.......That was the Mistique of it all........N.Claiborne was the place to be on Mardi Gras........What sweet memories !!!!! Early Mardi Gras morning hearing the beat of the Indians making their rounds to the neighborhood bars in the 7th ward........I remember how I felt my heart race to hear the beat and chants of the Mardi gras Indians early in the morning approaching in the distance while standing on my family's front porche.....near corner of Duels and St Anthony Streets......Beautiful costumes but by end of the day after making their rounds.... getting their shots of alcohol at every bar (totally plastered)......those beautiful costumes were shreds and dirty from rainey or wet day.... Remember streets were not paved back then....but it was a statement that those guys had the time off their lives..... shortly after they started the ritual all over again making new costumes for the following year........Now Year 2017 the practice continues.........
Thank you for your post!!! You have me remembering a Zulu float rolling down my street when I was a child! Totally unexpected, but mu Uncle used to be a Zulu, and they probably came on my street just because of him..............
lxprecords I had the privilege to ride on year with a host of family and friends....The Merry Makers group.....I/we had the time of our lives.......There was a white reporter from out of town that rode on our float to do her story.......I believe she was under the impression that all blacks in NOLA were uneducated, poor and on welfare......She said something about how were we able to afford $$$$$$ to ride ? (This was in the mid 1980's).......I love to correct ignorance.......So I enlightened her...........I said to her..... all who are riding our float are working upper/ middle class......Some relatives local and from out of town owned their own businesses......Electrician, Registered Nurse ,School teacher ,Telephone company worker ,Bricklayer .........If I remember correctly.... it cost $350 for the ride ,grass skirt and vest /top ,wig...and the Merry Makers after 5 dance.......That year because of a insurance dispute no coconuts were allowed..( I miss not having that experience for decorating and handing coconuts out)...I purchased throws and collected some from family and friends that they caught from other parades.... We were told to hold throws for the end of the parade.... around Lafitte Project on Orleans Ave......But being my first time I went buck wild from the start at Jackson Ave.....All I could see were heads/ screaming faces and hands...We had a double decker float..I was on top able to view everything !!!..By the time we turned to Canal Street have way down I was begging for throws from fellow riders......I spent nearly $1500 on throws .....With trows I bought and others given to me I had about 15 giant garbage bags full........ I should have listened to experienced riders who knew to space the throwing time to have enough for Orleans Ave....Iam near 70 years old now........and you know what ......I can't pitch as far.........but boy!!!!!!!! I would love to ride with the Zulus again........There's nothing to compare to riding with the historic Zulus........One Mo Time !!!!!!!! Just One Mo Time !!!!!! I Love New Orleans !!!!!!!!!

Celeste, thank you for eloquently describing such wonderful memories! I have always loved New Orleans and the culture. Was hoping to go to Mardi Gras for my 40th birthday this year, but who knows what the day may hold. Thank you once again!

I went this year for the first time and I am COMPLETELY hooked! New Orleans is an amazingly beautiful city FULL of history and culture. I loved it and I love the people I met from there. I can't wait until next year!
You'd like it, but remember, it gets a little wild in the French Quarter. More family type parades all over the rest of the city. Once they had a float like a large cooking pot with a giant lobster and six chefs in it. One chef was drunk and fell out of the pot!

My favorite part was collecting more coconuts than everybody on the block I was on. LOL. I didn't know the tradition with the coconuts or that they are the "prize" that everyone tries to get. The very first float, one of the Zulus walked up to me and told me he'd give me one if I took a selfie with him. From that moment on I got one from almost every float. I had a trash bag full of them by the end of the parade!

I've been going to mardi gras my whole life! I have never gone to the zulu or rex parade! I would very much like to go this year 💜💚💛

This is a parade.What do you think about This?
My family is Zulu. We had a story passed down by word of mouth since slavery. The story was told before someone very old was to die. I was told this story telling by word of mouth was a south African tradition. My family is from North Carolina and moved to Philadelphia. I never met anyone other than my family who was born American but also Zulu until I relocated to New Orleans. This is the only US city that has a Zulu culture. My family was sent into slavery in America by the Germans who were angry that we did not readily give up the formula for making steel which had been invented by Zulu. Shaka Zulu was known for having spears that could not break. Because the Germans sent us to America instead of back to Africa, America got the steel industry first. This parade keeps alive a lost family history that we share in this awesome city and is a faint remembrance of who we are, where we came from, and perhaps where some of us may one day return.

@@Khatholikapodcast I can"t think of any other reason for the name of Zulu and Shaka Zulu having this much presence in an American city based can you? Americans in other cities did not allow any sign of African culture but it may have been overlooked here or welcomed because of tourism. I do not know but what I do know is that Zulu are a strong and surviving nation.

I went, I did not see this,looks like Esplande Ave..So they are in route after Mardi Gras in New Orleans...I met a guy or dude..and some people from Louisiana and other states, possibly other countries...I can not sleep, because of inaccurate results in the past. I have people within oathes, past Louisiana residents and Krewe members...
