Introduction
The large number of health subjects falls in Concurrent List which calls for continuous coordination and cooperation between the center and the state governments to implement.
- It was set up by a presidential order on 9 th Aug 1952 under article 263 of the Indian Constitution to provide support and advice to the Department of Health on policy formulation.
- It acts as a Constitutional Body.
- It is the apex policy-making body in the Health Sector.
- Provide support and advice to the Department of Health on policy formulation.

1. Maintaining co-operation between Centre and States

Functions

2. Making Plans & policy for development of health in the entire Nation & promotion of facilities for training & research.
3. Recommendations to Central govt. for providing grants-in aids and financial assistance to state Govts. for medical services
4. Promoting &maintaining co-operation between Centre and States.
5. Review the activities of states in terms of grants.
6. Preparing draft by considering policies and recommendations related
to medical care, environment, nutrition and medical education.
