In the mid 80's I worked at Sprint Messenger Service, Lenny (Futura) was working as a bike messenger. He was just an awesome dude. I was raised in the South Bronx, I was not into Hip Hop culture that came to dominate the cultural landscape. I came to respect the art because of Lenny. I would add that Futura was a damn fine biker, rode fixed gear bikes when that was a real outlaw thing to do.
I was working at VCA Teletronics, one of NYC's 3 post production houses, building custom linear editing systems. I would come in on the weekends and "borrow" time in an edit control room with 8 vtrs connected to it. Access to this level of video equipment was so precious that artists from many disciplines would join me on the weekends, including the graffiti scene. The modern desktop revolution democratized video but there was something magical about getting rouge access to equipment that way.
I wish l had a time machine so l can go back to the early 80's and relive those wild style times. My teenage years were the freakin' best days of my life.
We created that effect by using an analog feedback loop around a digital video effects device (DVE). The cans are keyed out and used to seed the feedback. The DVE is zoomed back so the feedback goes away from the viewer. Google "video feedback" plug-ins for whatever software you work with to get a similar effect.
I moved to NYC at 17 from Virginia & used to see his name everywhere! At Danceteria, after hours, on buildings, in bathrooms, trains, everywhere you can think of.
I remember seeing a Futura 2000 in the pit, located at, Queens. I was like wow! Reading books like Spray can Art, and Subway Art. Seeing this legend up in real life was a surreal experience. Thanks for paving the way for us...
Thanks for replying Dean, I looked through the rest of your channel - there's some really amazing stuff there. I find it fascinating that this aesthetic is pretty much impossible to recreate now - the equipment just doesn't exist any more (the Experimental TV Center shut, last year I think.) I'm a huge fan of Wildstyle and that era of hip-hop and people like the Vasulkas and NJP and I never really thought there was much of a connection, so this was great to see. Thanks for uploading!
This is great! What a classic track. This video version seems different (and superior) to the original 12 inch version. Seems like it runs a couple minutes longer. Is this available somewhere?
Tnx Ren. Sorry, I don't know where the audio for this version is currently available. It was given to us on a reel-to-reel tape when we made the video.
I'm curious, did you use your own equipment or did you do this at ETC or somewhere like that? Just curious about the crossover between the graffiti/hiphop scene and video art stuff from that era.
