- These minor summits are located right next to Chilliwack Lake and offers some nice views of the BC Cascades.
On Saturday morning we met each other at 5:30am in Coquitlam, and had our quick breakfast at Macdonald on Whatcom Road. The drive down to Chilliwack Lake was uneventful but the Chilliwack Lake Road is in such a bad shape for millions of pot holes, which took a long while negotiating this shit show. The Paleface FSR seems to have got more water bars than before. The icy conditions made it worse. We had chains in our truck but did not want to spend too much time on it. We eventually parked our truck at 870m elevation, which is 2.7 kilometers away from the usual parking area in snow free season. We were happy about this, as we saw deep snow a few hundreds of meters away from where we parked. We followed our GPS track till Paleface Pass, where we headed to the right and then followed a gully thing to the ridge. This gully was a bit challenging due to the sugar snow on the steep slope. Once on the ridge, it was a nice walk with our snowshoes to Silverhead. A couple of tricky sections to the summit, but we managed with our snowshoes with no problems. Silverhead Peak is a broad peak with 360 degrees of views. We had a quick snack break and quickly left for our second objective, Paleface Mountain. The ridge walk was really nice and the only thing that may be worth mentioning is the summit block, 40+ degrees, which should be avalanche smart. Again, the views at the top were stunning; but we couldn’t linger long, as we needed to go to our third objective, Meroniuk. After losing around 100 meters, we started climbing up to the ridge. One tricky and sketchy area took us a bit longer time. Then it was nothing but a walk to the bottom of the summit block. I had a look and noticed an edge thing on the right leading to a steep slope to the peak. However; my friend started attacking it directly. I later spent 10 minutes with no luck, as the deep snow was not supportive at all. By this time, my friend Oleg had gone to the right side i recommended. Luckily he found the steep gully thing with supportive snow. In no time we were on the summit, enjoying the views around us. On the way back, we took a nice short cut, which saved us lots of time and distance. C2C 10 hours 45 minutes. Totally 18.2 kilometers with 1537 meters of elevation gain per my GPS. Another good day in mountains with my friends.
