- In this film, I will try to tell you about a brief history of the development of caravan building
The history of caravaning began long before our era. The first mention is of Cleopatra, who, as the ruler of Egypt, used the so-called "sun tent", equipped with everything necessary for hunting birds.
There is also a mention in history in the 12th century of the Venetian traveler Marco Polo, who traveled in a specially equipped cart that was pulled by oxen, and at the parking lots nearby a large tent was installed
In 1901-1902, the French automobile company "Panhard et Levassor", founded by René Panhard and Emile Levassor, created a caravan for themselves, which was towed by a car. They equipped their caravan with everything necessary for a comfortable trip.
At the same time, on another continent, in the United States, automobile production reached an industrial level, and by the 1920s the first automobiles designed for travel appeared. Automobile tourism became so popular in America that magazines began to write about it. The July 1920 issue of the magazine "Popular Science" was devoted to this phenomenon.
A group of world-famous people, such as Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone and naturalist John Burroughs, contributed greatly to the development of caravanning.
The crisis and Great Depression of the 1930s had a strong impact on the emerging caravan industry in the United States. The caravan as a luxury and wealth item gradually ceased to exist. Trailers and caravans began to be used more and more for everyday life, as it was cheaper and easier to live in such conditions. Special sites for motorhomes began to appear, where people lived in trailers.
Also, in the 50s, trailer-transformers began to appear. They were popular in Europe due to their maneuverability on narrow streets. Some models have undergone changes and have survived to this day. For example model - Beauer 2X, French manufacturer of camper trailers of the same name Beauer. All kinds of tourist equipment were also actively developed, and the trends of optimization and reduction of prices for products, laid down during the Great Depression, became relevant in the post-war period. Again, manufacturers began to offer different variations of cheaper models of tents, both for installation on the roof of a car and for tourism in general.
In the development of caravanning it would be wrong not to touch upon the founder of a popular manufacturer of residential trailers Airstream.Wally Byam, is the man behind the Airstream name.
In 1934, Wally Byam coined the name "Airstream" because his improved trailers literally "flowed like a stream of air." On January 17, 1936, the Airstream Trailer Co. introduced the "Clipper" model, and an American legend was born.
The Clipper was truly revolutionary. At $1,200, it was expensive, especially during the Depression, but the company couldn’t build them fast enough to keep up with the flood of orders. With its monocoque, riveted aluminum hull, it had more in common with the airplanes of its day than with its trailer-home predecessors. The trailer had its own water supply, an enclosed toilet, and was equipped with electric lighting. The Clipper boasted advanced insulation and ventilation systems, and even offered “air conditioning” that used dry ice.
One of the new developments in the field of professional tourist transport was the Car Hotel. А luxury mobile hotel designed by the Dutchmen Hans ter Burgh and Rudolf Das.
Above the cockpit is a 12-seat lounge. Behind this lounge is a bar with refrigerators and stoves where guests can have breakfast and have fun.
Rudolf Das, the designer of this hotel on wheels, showed how the lower and upper decks are connected. The hotel includes eight double apartments, four large and four small, which are accessible through a narrow corridor of the bus. Each apartment has four seats and a table, that can be folded down to create a bed with a few movements. In addition, the apartments have individual air conditioning, cold and hot water, radio and television.
When this car hotel is in use, the beds are made by a steward traveling on board the mobile hotel. This is the first double-decker tourist bus-hotel, 18 meters long. The developers planned to create as many as 12 of these hotels
I also wanted to cover the topic of bushcrafting, since it also intersects with tourism, but bushcrafting is not suitable for caravanning.

Thanks for your comment! The hobby of living in a camper is called Caravanning. This is where the second name came from - CARAVAN! Camping is a site where people relax in campers ( caravans)
@@i.p.a.7596 Maybe in Europe it is caravanning but here in the USA it is called camping. And where you stay is called a campground not a caravanground. And if you live in your RV it is called full time RVing. And by the way, what did a couple feeding pigeons have to do with camping along with some of the other photos.
