Trump and Musk Wage War on American Science

  • President Trump has launched what’s being described as an all-out assault on science and medicine. Given America’s impact on global science, this affects the entire world. Web pages referencing climate change and global warming are being deleted, words like “transgender” are being banned from medical publications and USAID has been labelled evil. As access to fundamental scientific information is put at risk, we find out how anxiety is rising among US scientists - and what it means for the rest of us.
Two studies of whale songs have uncovered striking similarities to the patterns of human language. In one study, researchers analysed and encoded around 150 unique sounds used by the males in their songs, while another study examined the length of whale “words”. What does this say about whale language - will we be able to understand what they’re saying one day?
Want to boil the perfect egg? Got 30 minutes to spare? Researchers have been rigorously testing the most scientific way to boil an egg, to ensure perfect consistency of the white and yolk - and it seems they hit the jackpot. Alex Wilkins tests the method for himself and compares it to your regular 7 minute job. The question is, is this new method worth the extra effort?
Hosted by Rowan Hooper and Chelsea Whyte, with guests James Dinneen, Grace Wade, Nancy Maclean, Gretchen Goldman, James Woodford and Alex Wilkins.

During his first Administration, T systematically deconstructed several research centres, by relocating them and forcing the scientists to choose between moving their families hundreds of miles, or resigning. He showed us then who he is, but we didn’t pay enough attention. We’re in a critical time: make backups, copy software, hide books.

I've heard that egg yolks cook at a lower temperature than the whites so it's possible to cook the yolk but not the white if it's done slowly enough and at the right temperature.

Odd that hippo songs are not compared to mysticete songs, since they are distantly related. BTW, odontocetes are closer to tenrecs, which also use sonar. So Cetacea is not a monophyletic clade.

Musk seems to be auditioning to be the new Joseph McCarthy.
We should be grateful that , to protect our freedom, he will ensure that everyone thinks and behaves in the monolithic ideolgically approved manner.

@@credenza1 No, even if I agreed with your assertion, which of course I don't - no self-respecting person could be that fawning - that was not to what I was referring.

If Elon connects the weather data to skylink.
    We can do a lot.

@voidisyinyangvoidisyinyang885 I'm talking about NOAA and the FAA.
How that system is funded and needs updated with more technology.
Currently, we are using very large antenna and very few satellites.
The US government is giving the data we pay for through NOAA to major corporations who make 3 trillion a year and pay nothing back.
Most of the weather data funded through NOAA is produced at the Airports because weather is local and the FAA needs accurate first hand reports from the flight command towers.
Elon wants to make StarShip the new global transportation system.
If the US government had full access to the weather data StarLink(SkyNet) 😎
30,000+ small sensors would be a lot more accurate and Elon could relieve the US taxpayers a lot for DOGE.
As long as he agrees to personally fund the system and then the current monopoly can be destroyed.
Let the dogs fight, but currently it's just one giant chow hound eating for free and returning nothing.

So with usaid I think we need to wait and see what happens. I don’t like to put myself in a box politically but I do tend to lean to the left of center a little bit. That being said, I think that finding out where our tax money is being wasted is a good idea. Hopefully the GOOD things that usaid does will return and the slush fund that’s used to hide money will be rooted out.

You don’t need to shut down entire Departments to undertake an audit.

scrubbing and slashing is not an audit. The U.S. military budget just failed their audit again - as always - with trillions of dollars unaccounted for. Elon Mush has $60 billion in government welfare - mainly military contracts. Mush is not going to slash and scrub the military budget that is 50% of the U.S. tax budget when you include past debt spending for military costs.
