    The Germans are 'famous' for their direct way of speaking even in the german speaking community. As an example,
    A Swiss in a Café in Germany get ask by the waiter: "Is there anything else you want to order?"
    The answer of the Swiss often could be something like: "Yeah... Maybe a coffee..." which leads to the confused question of the waiter: "What maybe? do want a coffee or not?"

    • @DeanaandPhil
      @DeanaandPhil  5 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      Ahh Thanks! That's a better example! I couldn't think of one on the spot, but answering questions directly are good examples!
      When someone asks, "Do you want to meet up for lunch tomorrow?" Phil would say "yes" or "no" while I would say "That sounds nice!" or "I don't think I can." My friends in the USA would know that I'm agreeing or disagreeing, but there could be some confusion depending on one's normal speaking culture. In the Southeast USA, we were taught that declining "indirectly" was more polite, so it's become a habit. I think a lot of the USA does that too. - Deana 😊

      Germanic languages typically are more “straight to the point”. And yes the Nordic languages are classified as Germanic even though no German would understand neither Danish, Norwegian or Swedish.
      We also tend to speak in “absolutes” rather than questions. EG “I want a fork”. Rather than “could You please vand me a fork”. The first being much more effeciant, although not very polite, whereas the second (polite) question doesn’t actually guarantee You Will be getting a fork.
      And don’t Getafe me started on all the archaic titulations in German business corespondance.
      But one thing the german language has going for it (and we Scandinavians lost over time) is the verb at end of a sentence. Meaning You actually have to let the speaker finish his or her sentence before vocalising your own oppinion.

    My wife is American and she noticed this right away how I shop for anything, she goes for the brand names, I go for the best price vs value and I do this at all times, I won't allow her to do the groceries lol.
    As for adding taxes and fees at the counter, I find that to be the most idiotic thing America does, it makes no sense.
    Now as for healthcare, being a Medical Doctor and having done a fellowship in the USA, I can assure you, the American system the way it is now is a gigantic mess.
    It is a for profit system, designed to maximize profits, the US system is a reactionary system, the German system is a preventative system.
    The best analogy is think of cars, in Germany you change your oil regularly, in America, you change your oil when the you notice the engine running bad or is starting to knock.
    Germans would rather pay the small fee up front to the oil because in the long run, it's way cheaper than replacing your engine!

The food can barely even be called German anymore. The tracht and traditional clothing the people wear is all cheap and “costumey”/not authentically correct. To me Frankenmuth is what Americans “think” Germany is like. Also, outside of Frankenmuth in Michigan, anytime Germany is brought up somehow Nazis are always brought up in my experience so I understand what he is saying in this video. Actually, in Germany, the monthly cost of medical care is 8-9 % of your pre-tax income. Your employer pays another 6-7 & of your income for your health insurance. And already university students (from the age of 25) have to pay about 100 Euro a month for medical care, no matter if they are even working or not. Additionally, there are many services that are not or not fully free. Teeth, for example, are a very expensive thing.
    There is no opting out, you have to have health insurance by law. If you are being unlucky and do not fit any other "category", you have to pay for "freiwillige Versicherung" ("voluntary"). Still, I do prefer this system, just wanted to point that out.
