My best friend was "interrupted" by an old lady the other day. He was putting his biomüll into the container and, like you should - and he always does, he emptied the plastic bag and threw the bag into the plastics container. The lady saw it and was soo pleased that she just had to tell him how much she appreciated it. ☺ Imagine, a german being so happy that one feels the need to interrupt a stranger and talk to them. 😅 I thought it was just very sweet. And my friend (who is very awkward around people) was quite amused by it.

I mean, why put it in a bag then anyway? if you're in nature, just better leave the poo on the ground, in the gras or something, where it'll just naturally decompose or put it in a bag and throw it in a bin, but why hurt the environment by leaving the plastic on the ground?!?!?! 🤬 (oh and yes, I'm German^^)

    • @FireSignd
      @FireSignd 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@sheliak4576 Problem is, u can't overtake on the right since most German ppl drive moderately slow there. So you're forced to drive slow on a Autobahn without speed limit because some idiot doesn't know the unwritten rules on German Autobahnen. It's not like you're forced to drive fast, just swap lanes if you don't wanna stress yourself out.

    • @windhelmguard5295

those rules are not unwritten. it is the law that you have to drive on the right lane when you're not overtaking anything.

    • @windhelmguard5295
      @windhelmguard5295 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

the funny thing about all that is that separating your trash is pretty pointless in germany.
all the separate bins are collected by the same cars and then thrown onto the same pile before it all goes into the sorting machine. the only reason why we separate garbage is because of a law that states that stores have to dispose of packing material for free, which lead to the invention of the yellow bin or sack as well as the green dot. the yellow bin is where everything that has the green dot goes and nothing else, regardless of what it's made off. this is to ensure that you are not paying for getting rid of packing material.
i have seen so many people who separate garbage wrong too, here is how it goes: does it have a green dot? if yes it goes in the yellow bin, if no then is it made of paper or cardboard? if yes it goes in the blue bin, if not it's hausmüll. any separating you do beyond that is pointless.

I'm Australian & love these rules. We also share some of the same ones. It is illegal to leave dog poo anywhere in a public space, so owners bring little bags with them when they take their dog for a walk (& we also have free dog clean up bags at most parks & beaches, with a bin next to it). If only everyone thought of how things affect other ppl & act with respect life would be so much easier.

Summarizing, it is the disregard for your civic duties and contempt for the rights of others that make people mad. German communities are usually highly organized with shared duties, roles and responsibilities. This is what makes them function so well under normal conditions. You noticed yourself that people are looking for each other and are taking care of lost gloves or stuff on the pavement. Not all of the motivation to do so is altruistic, though, there is also a part in us that makes us love to control and correct others. In exaggeration you could call it policing each others. This feature of German togetherness fades to some extent in bigger cities, where anonomity prevents sharing of responsibilities and then you see us being the hogs just as everyone else.

I read somewhere that German culture is a weird mix of individualism and collectivism. Like you are free to have your own identity and pursue your own goals, but there is something of a collective mind when it comes to order (the example in the video) and duty (for example working moral,)

In the early 90's I was walking with my girlfreind in Germany when we came upon a pedestrian lane traffic stop in a very quiet neighborhood with the red light on.It was a wooded area almost in the middle of a park with no cars to be seen.On the opposite side was a girl maybe 10 years old also waiting for the light to turn green. Since there was no on coming traffic from both directions we foolishly decided to cross anyway and when we did the girl got very furious at us shouting "do you have tomatoes for eyes?" It was funny and terrifying at the same time and it served us right. So yeah, wait for the green light before crossing, especially in Germany.:-)

I know you didn’t mean to do anything terrible, but you were actually setting a bad example for kids. So maybe that’s why the girl got so angry - we teach our kids to only cross the street when the pedestrian light turns green, but then when adults cross on a red light it confuses kids and sets a bad example. Yeah, I guess we’re suckers for rules 😄 it’s just something we never do when there’s kids at the crossing

However, not every bike lane in Germany is a proper bike lane and you are not required to use them. Unfortunately, car drivers do not know or like to forget traffic regulations, if they limit them. So I would like to add number 6. Germans get pissed of when someone parks on the bicycle lane, pedestrian way or in any other no parking zone. ;)

I don't know how it is in other cities, but here in Bremen a lot of the bike lanes along smaller streets are in a really crappy state. I usually use the car lane when cycling along there. Usually these smaller streets also are not the ones you would drive through with a car unless your destination is somewhere in that neighborhood, because there are bigger streets available, that can handle more traffic.

About public phone calls: There was times when you were silently asked to come out to the hall when there was a call for you. When mobile phones came up, people would be embarassed when they went off and left the room as quickly as possible. But today people have no shame anymore. I consider it molesting all the others when they have to listen to a "convo" when they do NOT want to. I put "convo" in quotes because it's often some monologue like "ya ... hmmm ... no ... oh ya ... no ... I dunno ... maybe ... yes ... really? ... no ... no ... why? ... ah ... aha ... ya ... " and so on. --> BANG-BANG-BANG !!!

we have that dog poop issue in Austria as well...and at high frequented dog places there were installed special stands where you can get poop-bags with the sign saying
"Das Sackerl für das Gackerl" ..
"Sackerl" means "little bag" and "Gackerl" means "little shit/little poop"..
and we make always fun about that a bit awkward sounding reminder phrase
Germans would call poop "Kacke" but in Austria "K" sounds are way softer pronounced so it is spelled "Gacke" here
and the ending "-erl" (but pronounced like "-al" in Austria) is the equivalent to the ending "-chen" to trivialize/belittle things and it is also used in some southern german regions near our border as well ..
so we usually say in our common speech "bisserl" (but it sounds like "bissal") instead of "bisschen" or "Mäderl" (sounds like "Mädal") instead of "Mädchen" or "Katzerl" (sounds like "Katzal") instead of "Kätzchen" and "Sackerl" (sounds like "Sackal") instead of "Säckchen" and so on ......

I have a racing bycicle, too. The problem with bike lanes is that they are very often in a bad shape, at least this is my experience. The subsoil is not very smooth, there are hobbles and stuff. No problem if you ride a normal bike. But a racing bycicle doesn't have any suspension at all. Means you feel every little unevenness in your hole body. Moreover, if you ride fast, it is often dangerous at least in small towns to use the bike lanes, because pedestrians step on the bike lanes from time to time, so if there are people, I sometimes choose to go on the road because it is safer for me an the people around me ;-)
I didn't understand these things until I started riding racing bycicle. But now I try to find a compromise. If the bike lane is ok, I use it, but if there is few traffic and/or many pedestrians, I chose the street.

Other ones that come to mind: jaywalking, especially in front of kids, driving slow on the middle or left lanes of an Autobahn, littering of any kind, men that use your bathroom at home and do not sit down to pee (so messy), entering someone's home without taking your shoes off, being late, being wasteful, ...

As a real German I have to inform you that you forgot about the most impotant rule! That's not eben a joke: German beer is the best in the entire World! If you compare it to other beers you'll get in serious trouble. Like, everybody is going to hate you.

Is it? Which brand? I've tried a couple German beers, but I found Belgians better. Maybe I just didn't try the good ones. I have had Bitburger/Pilsener and all. But Hoegaarden has been the best beer I've ever tried

    1. it won't make them angry, it's also an "Ordnungswiedrigkeit" (misdemeanour i would call it in english?), which can cost u around 15-30 € or higher (dempends on where u live)
    2. If u don't seperate the rubbish correct, the rubbish collection can feel free to not touch it and let it there as it is. (if u wanna cheat there u need to hide it in between ;) )
    4. In germany i'ts called "Ruhezeiten" (daily rest period), commonly under the week (and Saturday) from 22:00-07:00 in the morning and from 12:00-15:00, Sunday and holdays the whole day. Yea it totally fucks up, if some start to drill a whole or mow the loan on restricted times^^
    5. As far as I know, you are used to it, to ride the bike on the circle path, if there is one

Not only on sunday, but also e.g. for ~2 hours after lunchtime and in the evening noisy activity (even tuning music instruments) is prohibited (as people tend to have naps after lunch and want to relax in the evening)

point 5!! I'm a male nurse, driving to peoples for homecare.
Everytime it happens that a cyclist rides his bike on the street when there is literal 10cm away a bicycle lane.
I'm on a clock, stressed and these c**** are freakin me out. I have to wait until I can pass them. Everytime this happens, they steal not my, but an old ladys/man time to get ready for the day, his medics or whatelse.
What I want to say is, be clever, use bicycle lane, it's saver for you, u can't cause an accident when cars try to pass you and (for your interest) u can't get caught when breaking the law by leading to an accident this way.
Everyone who can't use the lane near them are douchebags, egonaniacs who don't give a shit about others, they didn't even think about it anyway what they're doing.
3 days before this comment, it happened again, a young women did this and smiled at my face as I hit the horn (awkward) driving a minute behind her ..
At this moment, you as a man realise that sometimes some people deserve a straight punch in the face for stupidity and egoism even if this person is a women.
That much angry you can get a german with this.

I think you got all points right here. As a German, those are exactly the same things bothered me the most here in America. You can put it also this way: We Germans don't like disrespecting common rules. (or it's just me and my "Quality Manager" attitude :-) )

Not every food is for the "Biotonne" and not every plastic you can put in the "gelbe Sack". It depends where you live in Germany.
What you can put in the "Resttonne" can be different too. So I m German and I had to learn this too and I still have problems remembering what goes in the right bin. And I have a feeling it changes sometimes.

  • @MikhahS

You missed it with the last Point.
The most "Bike Lanes" aren't driveable. For sure not with a lightweight Bike.
To halt Distance - Abstandsgebot von 1,5m - is also a Rule for Cyclists. So you have to ride "in the middle" of your Lane of Traffic.
Furthermore, the Roads ARE NOT only for Cars. So there's no Reason to get Upset.

Some bike Lanes are shared with pedestrians, and as such unsuitable for racing bikes, many are in disrepair, many end without a logical continuation, many have sudden twists and turns, slightly too high curbs at road crossings, some turn to gravel without notice. Lots of reasons why racing bikers in particular prefer to use the highway. On sparsely travelled roads this shouldn't be a problem, and why they choose busy roads, God only knows.

I thought that German's were direct? Why doesn't anyone say something to the woman who is not separating her rubbish? Why isn't anyone telling people to stop talking loudly on their mobile phones?
As for bike lanes, Germans also get really upset if people walk in the bike lanes and bike on the sidewalks. I've seen that one in action in Berlin.

    • @randomnessr2538

Some germans would, but it's also a different kind of being 'direct'.
We may seem 'direct' as germans cause e.g. we won't chat you up with small talk if we simply want your help for something, we just ask.
But in situations like the neighbour it's also possible nobody complains for years, cause we want to keep the relative peace of living together ^^

The bad thing about somebody mixing the garbage is that the garbage collectors are entitled to leave the bin there and refuse emptying it, or that the property owners (who are responsible for the waste disposal, despite having tennants living there) will receive a fine (which they'll then pass on to the tennants, of course).
