  • Move aside, Northern Lights! Southern Lights are observed from places in Australia and New Zealand. So now that Northern Lights are dimming, opt for this cheaper, lesser known, and equally phenomenal alternative. 💫

    The Southern Lights are visible year-round in Antarctica.

    I saw the Southern Lights on the North coast of Kangaroo Island, South Australia a few weeks ago. A very rare event over here. It was quite a sight to see those vertical columns of light dancing across the sky.

    I'll be in Tasmania in May of this year! Really hoping to catch the Aurora Australis since I already saw the Aurora Borealis in Iceland thrice last year -- and it was epic!

    Part of the reason the Aurora Australis is less well known has to do with there being way less people living at latitudes in which it is generally visible (kinda hard to live in an area that's covered largely by open oceans; with only a fraction of the landmass available compared to it's northern counterpart [much what land is available largely consists of the frozen wastes of Antarctica, and the harsh deserts and tundras of Patagonia {the latter of which is sparsely populated and the former having no permanent human settlements whatsoever}; only near the northern edge of visibility are there more populous regions like Melbourne, Sydney, Cape Town, Santiago and Buenos Aires, and even there it's usually very close to the southern horizon, except for when solar activity is exceptionally strong]).

    • @MariaMartinez-researcher
      @MariaMartinez-researcher หลายเดือนก่อน

      Greetings. Corrections. Antarctica does have permanent settlements in the sense that they are inhabited all-year round, by scientific and/or military and service personnel, including their families (depending on the country's base). The South Pole American station is manned even during the polar winter. They are not permanent settlements only in the sense that those people don't live their entire lives there.
      And, Chilean here, from Santiago. We are by no means close enough to the Pole as to see the Southern lights. The recent huge ones were, exceptionally, visible in Punta Arenas, in the southern tip of the country. I have lived in Buenos Aires and I follow the Argentinean news; they didn't see them this time, they never see them. Their best option is Ushuaia, in their southern tip. I don't know about Australian cities, but the lack of videos of people in Sidney or Melbourne watching the last solar storm is telling. Sources say that they are in the range, but they need to go out from urban light pollution to see anything.

      There is no southern lights in patagônia,neither chile or Argentina, because the lights are related to the magnetic southern pole there is not close to the south America, but it's closer to new zealand... magnetic south pole is not the same thing as geographic south pole

      They're looking better than usual here in Australia more recently and people take cameras that capture what the naked eye can't see of course.
      This is a travel ad though and people travel south to catch a plane that flies over the Antarctic with the lights right up close to the windows. I think there are views of this somewhere on youtube.

    "So now that Northern Lights are dimming, opt for this cheaper, lesser known, and equally phenomenal alternative"
    No, if the northern lights are dimming, the odds of seeing the southern lights are even lower. The land masses down south are further from the auroral ovals than that of the north. Please don't make misleading videos without doing the research.

      absolutely KingdomCome so why don't you in particular stay home (the more often the better) and keep reading your good book and asking to your invisible sky fairy to turn off these devil lights less the children desire to go outside and look upon those southern lights with marvel wonder and mystery of this world and life instead of reading the good book and trembling with fear at the thought they may on going outside be tempted to sin and consider the world is spherical so therefore end up burning in hell fire for eternity as a divine expression of gods love

      @@horatiomud-gudgeon4724 I guess you can find some nice pictures of 24 hour sun in the south. You seem so klever and smart. I havent found one single picture from twilight sun in the area of the south arctic cirkle. And when i google Aurora antarctica i find aurora Australis - Southern Lights Tasmania. Tasmania is at 40-43 degrees south. And 40-43 degrees north you find northern of Japan. 630 miles above Los Angeles.Or in europe is italy. And they dont see the northern light at all. And no pictures from antarctica with Aurora or midnight pictures. So something is fischy here! But as globe expert you might have some pictures and explanations to why this is?
