It wasn't until "The Gift" that I truly became a Weller devotee. When he launched TSC, it was fantastic. As a Jazz, Blues and Soul/R&B lover, I appreciated Paul's nod to the American genres (though he would assail us in lyric over time). I have friends still have not forgiven him. some 39 years later ...
So why are you frightened - can't you see that it's you At the moment there's nothing - so there's nothing to lose Lift up your lonely heart and walk right on through Wow! Just discovered this live version from an older Weller. This is so good. Glad to see that others like this underappreciated Jam song!
My nephew died suddenly at the age of 23. I have loved my nephew since I was a baby. I'm worried that I'm still going to heaven. Mr.paul Thank you very much for the good song
This is my favourite Jam track, so pleased to find this vid just now & hear an older Weller breathing new life into such a great Jam tune from the live LP, 'Dig The New Breed that I first bought on cassette til I eventually wore it out. Nice one for uploading...
I am teaching my 10 year old daughter how to play guitar and she loves it. Its really brought her out, this is going to be her first go at picking and I know she will love this song. She has access to my Fender Tele, but its too big so I bought her a 3/4 squire strat... in pink LOL. Have to get this one nailed ... Great song and great meaning. Why cant people write things like this anymore? Are we losing our creative spirit?
Amazes me that Carleen isn’t more known. I’ve listened to great singers with unique voices: Karen Carpenter, Mica Paris, Gladys Knight, Jill Scott, Nina Simone, etc.,but Carleen has something extra. An untouchable gift.
TBF he was almost 60 when this was recorded, it’s unlikely anyone is going to have passion any more at that age. For what it is, I reckon it's perfectly acceptable (I saw The Jam in 1982 and they did perform this)
14 year old..played my Dig the New Breed album to death..this song always reminds me of a girl i was nuts about but couldnt get to..she was the Ghost..now 40 years later im thinkin maybe the lyrics apply to me😢
This was an early indication of the direction that Weller was going with Style Council and later his solo career. Also shows the depth and talent he's always had as a song writer.
As Mr Weller slips into his dotage, he transforms his early works into easy listening. Next: John Lydon performs 'Anarchy in the UK' as a marimba shuffle.
This was my dads fav song ❤️👼🏼😭 R.I.P I love you sooo much
Bless you. Makes me cry every time I hear it. Take care
Your dad must have been an incredible person. :D Don't know if I'm his age, but it's my favorite song in the whole world too. Blessings!

Chills! They lyrics are this version are beyond. Thank you Paul Weller and The Jam. One of the best 40 years ago and today in 2022!
they're the same lyrics as the original
When the dust settles, Paul Weller will be right there-playing his beautiful songs! Thank you Paul.
This stripped back version and Weller's older voice, really brings out the lyrics more than ever.

He gets better with age 👌🏼

Yes agree 100 precent ! Luck enough to have seen the Jam in Dublin 1978 all Mod cons tour !
I have worked with Paul and if I know him, he will be frustrated with how unclean this ending is.😊
Legend!!
Utter brilliance personified
Absolutely, I am now going to listen to the Gift😊
So strong.
class enough sed
❤️🙏🕊🦋💞
Sweet.
WOW.
That, my friends, is a song.
Everything is so much softer. I like it still, but miss the anger and the raw edge of the 70/80s.
I saw jam in liverpool wi beefy, tommo, chadders, fenny, n me, roo. Aged 15.
Damn!

Paul, You still owe me a packet of polos, lol, xxx
