I changed from Canon to Sony several years ago because of Canons' cripple hammer mentality. It seems to me now that Sony have established their market share, they have now forged their own version of the cripple hammer. BTW great videos, honest and with awesome humour, keep it up. You may very well end up being the only youtuber we can trust.

It's funny you mention this. I bought the original a7s when I saw the glory of low light performance in a small tiny full frame body. Phillip Bloom's spectacular showcase of the footage won our hearts and is to blame for that purchase. Shortly after they came out with the a7s II and I felt jilted for paying what I did. Years go by and I waited for the perfect camera specs that I thought would be worth dropping the a7s for an upgrade. Low and behold the mark III comes out. Great. Beautiful. Perfect. Price not so much. I check to see what my camera is worth to go towards the new gem. $500. Once worth $2500... now worth $500 if I'm lucky. The depreciation from mark I to mark III is just insane. Now I'm debating to get the a7s III when the a7s VI comes out to beat Sony's game. It's a win. But a tragic win with a shriveled heart.

the "incremental drip" is a tech wide pandemic. Companies know too many are suckers for new shiny toys with no care for specs. Only 10 people care about specs. Until the masses stop opening their wallets/maxing plastic, the "drip" will continue and happiness will never find us.
I own one Sony digital camera (Sony Cybershot DSCW150 8.1MP Digital Camera, CCD sensor) I picked up at a yard sale for $3.00 usd. It actually is quite nice. Use it for documenting building construction. Always great content and thanks for the rants they are priceless!
Your EOS R setup is working so well I just bought a Canon R8. I imagine lens stabe is enough if it's mostly locked off. It's smaller, lighter, and $200 cheaper than upgrading my X-T2 to the X-T5. And only $200 more than the X-S20, which is also somehow heavier. Plus, Jared Polin said it has the R6II internals and AF on par with the R3, so it felt like I was getting real grown adult value, not this 20-something Fujifilm fuckboy value I've been used to for the past 7 years - The tactile retro dial experience of missing the shot.
X-S20 heavier than R8? Yeah, but that X-S20 has IBIS, better video specs for those who cares and smaller lenses, your R8 does not have smaller lenses, in fact they are pretty massive even for full frame standards, and if you bought that solely for photography, you screwed up mate, you simply, screwed up.
@@SMGJohn Surprisingly 30g heavier. Nah, I factored in the lenses too. I did a lot of research, rentals, and testing out my preferred set up. I don't care about IBIS. Most of the time it's not even good. I don't care about megapixels. I'm very happy in the 18-30 range. Plus, I'm tired of Fujifilm never improving their AF. It's been 7 years and they're yet to release a camera I'd want to upgrade my X-T2 to. They just incrementally add minor bullshit I don't care about like extra heavy duty video codecs, bigger single battery charge, IBIS, bigger bulkier grip, stacked sensors for high fps bursts, huge pro 1.4 lenses. It's all over techy junk I don't personally need. It's bigger, harder, and faster in every way that I would never use, and not why I bought Fujifilm in the first place. Canon is the better deal for me.
I could have bought an X-E4 body only at $850 USD and been happy, but they discontinued it. I don't need full frame sized aps-c cameras to miss focus at 40fps or 40MP, I can do that just fine on my own. 🤷♂️

I am sure the R8 is a "decent" camera, but here is the problem, cameras for photography, have been decent since 2011, you bought no upgrade, the body might be lighter, but the lenses are the same size and weight.
Better dynamic range? No, Sony sensors already in 2012 peaked essentially, you get more resolution today of course, but other than that, scientific data does not support any more improvement, photons to photo have good tests data on this and it shows in real side by side comparisons too.
R8 shoots video though thats why I thought you got it, why buy new bodies today for photography unless you want smallest size possible, then a full frame body does not make a whole lot of sense I mean the A7rII still a beast today and still MUCH lighter than anything out there apart from R8 but you get smaller lenses which compensate.
And actually I am not even gonna argue with you on the AF, because I agree, however a lot of people told me the X-S20 AF system is really good now, I have not tried it so I am sceptical and I also see very few reviewers actually being in-depth about it, which is SUS as hell.
@@SMGJohn My X-T2 broke. Otherwise I wouldn't have upgraded at all, and I didn't want to spend more money for more of the same. The mechanical shutter failed, then the EVF, then finally stopped receiving power from the battery. It was well-used so it was a well-earned death. 🌸
True, for absolutely peak size and AF, I would have gone with the A7CII that's coming, but price and I don't like how realistically colour accurate Sony is. It's too real for me. After testing: I like the stylised look of Canon, Nikon, and my Ricoh GR the most of any brand.
I probably could have gone with the Z30 and the 24f1.7, but I'm worried they are going to go the same route as EOS M where they just never make any more lenses for aps-c, and buying into a dead-end day one seems like it will only be tragic. Otherwise, it was basically perfect for me.
100% agree. That is super sus. I don't believe Fujifilm really, they've said it a bunch of times and it's been marginal improvement to the AF. I think they just don't invest in the software side and UX at all which is why they haven't really made as big strides in the past few years comparatively. 🤔
For me, my optimum R8 setup is still smaller and lighter than my optimum X-T5 setup, it's also cheaper, I get competent AF, and better gain noise performance at higher ISO, the ✨FULLEST FRAME✨ look for 1.5x extra sexy corner vignette, plus I can utilise manual full frame lenses like the Leica 28 Elmarit uncropped with Canon's innovative manual focus UX.
Tbh if Fujifilm would sell me an X-E4 or an X-M2, I'd quickly forgive their glacial progress, because I like my XF lenses. My only real problem is that for the size, weight, and money: What they offer for an aps-c right now is not good value to me personally, compared to the same set up on the entry level full frame market. Plus, I have an Iceland trip booked so I can't wait around for them to stop jerking off and make me something aps-c sized again

Canon EOS 5D shoot nice photos back in year 2005. Biggest improvement newer cameras are low light performance and write speed to memory card. Actually in photography biggest improvement happened in optical image stabilization, that easily gave many more stops exposure time.
And it was Canon EOS 5D Mark II at 2008 where they got idea to put video shooting and that started using SLR to shoot video but the first SLR where the fullHD video was not garbage was Panasonic GH3 at 2012. Then they got decent 4k in GH5s at 2018.
Sony did this in full frame, Sony a7s II at 2015, we got good FullHD, and Sony a7s III so we good 4k in full frame at 2020.
In video it is just the fidelity you. If FullHD capture is enough, we got cameras long time ago and now we have 4k capture.
I don't think we got that much of need for better sensor, instead I want to see cinemacamera to put smaller, cheaper and better ergonomic form factor what FX6 is. Now we need to build own custom rig around FX3, Sigma Fp or something and that is the best option today.

a7s III is my favorite Sony release of all time. I like some of their new cameras… but a7s III blew me away and was so worth the wait.
Sony A7S IV should be stacked, with 4K@240fps, 1080p@480fps downsampled, 1080p@960fps line-skipped. Rumors say that A9III might be doing that which made me eagerly waiting, could be using the new gen of sensors, 2-layer transistor first found on Xperia 1 v phone.

Unfortunately all that you said is spot on. Sony is a company that has dissapointed me because photography and videography is not the bulk of their businesses. They are not as caring to their customers as are Nikon and Canon and even Panasonic at getting firmwares out. I own an a7siii and even if it doesn't have some of the goodies the newer cameras have, for video, I couldn't ask for a better camera. ❤

Hey Kasey, I am getting into vlogging and as of right now, the best place to film is inside of my car. Do you have recommendations on something that will make it easy to mount a camera to glass? (Only record while parked, and not while moving). If it helps I have a Fujfilm X-H2s and a front heavy cinema lens. Hey Casey. You have the only camera channel that I'm subscribed to and I watch almost every video. I almost never, ever watch any other camera channels (besides DPR). You've helped me and entertained me no end. Now is my chance to give back. The DP Review sentence that you think is nonsense is perfectly sensible. The thing you're missing is *punctuation*. The meaning of any sentence is derived from the words, grammar, AND punctuation. The sentence says: "...captures a 155° ultra-wide FOV..." THEN there is a parenthesis. This is an example of PUNCTUATION. Inside the parentheses is an extra piece of information that MODIFIES or adds more specificity to the previous statement about FOV. In this case it tells the reader that there are conditions for the availability of the UW FOV - conditions that have to do with resolution and frame rate. As always, the sentence in question can be read without including the words in parentheses and the sentence stands complete without it. So you can get this out of the sentence: "....captures a 155° ultra-wide field of view and can capture HD video at frame rates up to 4k/120." Then we can look back and see the conditions under which the wide FOV is available. Is it elegant writing? Absolutely not. It should have read: ...captures a 155° FOV (at 4k/60 only with stab deactivated). It has resolution and frame rates up to 4k/120p. The idea here is that short sentences are often better at conveying information clearly. Ask Ernest Hemingway. Is it confusing or does it fail to use proper grammar? Absolutely not. If you were educated in the US I (a product of US public schools) wouldn't be surprised that you ignored the punctuation. I usually assume, though, that most other countries do a better job of teaching their young the prevailing language in written form. Or perhaps Canadians don't use parentheses? Pretty sure they do. I would also offer the observation that the DPR heros (and they are heros) were also educated in Canada so there must be some systemic educational failure in Canada (though probably not nearly as bad as in the US). See how those parenthesis work? Pretty neat, ehh?

Good video chrono historical perspective
After seeing what Sony is NOT doing to improve the functionality of the A1 and the a7s iii, i am not inclined to buy another Sony in the future. I left Canon because they deliberately released the R5 crippled and incomplete. Plus, i heard good things about Sony firmware updates. I can not see paying these high-end prices for the a7s iii, like I did, just to watch the fx3 and every other newer low-end camera they make get updates that are easy to add to my camera. Sony simply refuses. Not going to get me again.
They said they're releasing 10 cameras this year alone.. which sounds like way too many.. idk where i heard that.. i think Jared Polin said it.. so.., hopefully one of em is actually a big step up and not handicapped.. (probably the 10th release) .. i don't see how they could drop that many products though

Here's a question. Why, after all these years, is the Sony A7SIII priced around $3500 (body only) as of this writing, August 2023? The Sony A7IV, being more of an all-rounder between photography and video, has more megapixels (33 vs. 12) and still shoots 10-bit 4:2:2 video internally just like the A7SIII, yet it's about $1K cheaper at $2500 (body only). Are there other features of the A7SIII I'm not aware of, that warrant that extra $1K, even after 3 years + being in the marketplace?

They've brought out a RODE WIRELESS PRO... It has a 32 bit float... might be valuable information to you not sure.
Know you understand the need for a 32 bit float, a no brainer when everyone has been saying "you cannot hear more than 24bit 48khz"... yes, but the computer does so it doesn't give you a good 24bit 48khz if you process everything in those rates.

Rumors for the A7S3 release started in 2017 and they didn’t release it because it was too good.
You have to be careful saying nothing that’s come out since 2020 is as good as the A7S3 while also trying to get a free update for the A7S3
Also, the A7IV was released in 2021, not 2022.

They have items that perform well but their souls are cold sterile and robotic. In the long run I’d rather something that brings fun and joy to the heart. YMMV.
These companies keep coming up with new models just to stay in the news. Some of the cameras don't make any sense because we already have similar older cameras (maybe better). Also, they take some time to launch a flagship product (not necessarily the most professional one, here I am talking about the one used by youtubers in general) and keep offering lower spec cameras to the masses. The top professional range may take even more time to develop. Also, this DPreview was much better with previous anchors.
Sony kind of have missed opportunity... They had that amazing 1" sensor from 2015 but they just cloned that different cameras from camcorderds to pocket cameras without imagination.
Instead I would love to see 1" cheap camerabody and accessory ecosystem: Interchangeable lenses, waterproof casing, crashproof casing, flash, microphones, handle rigs, tiny optimized gimbals, booster, filters, batteries, strap it to motorcycle helmet, some sucker rig to put on side of car, drone, pair two of them for 3D-camera rig...
How cool that would have been? GoPro have good accessory ecosystem but that is fixed for that fisheye tiny sensor but that 1" wonder could have made shooting videos more fun than ever.

As someone who is getting back into the camera game, it's crazy to see how much BS is out there in this world. These reviewers are about as ethical and honest with their ads....errrrr....reviews as video game reviewers are. Such fakeness and it makes it a bit difficult to actually figure out if something should be bought or not.
I find myself using Amazon to be able to return things since there's such a low amount of legit videos and reviews out there.
ZV-E10 is the best budget YT "studio" camera - best price to features ratio - (for some reason they marketing it as vlogger camera ...). There will be probably ZV-E10 II soon, cause original ZV-E10 got discounted 20% in my country.
It is usable only in 1080p.
ZV-1 got much value for money and it can shoot good 4k too.

Rolling shutter makes the footage look trash in 4k, both A6600 and ZV-E10.
I mean ZV-1. It has fast 1" sensor without rolling shutter issues that shoot 4k with little crop, and fast lens (F1.8-2.8) 24-70mm in 35mm equivalent. I got mine about $500. Shoots S-Log2 and HLG for grading and doesn't look that bad in low light (noise can be fixed in post if shooting low light).
That is excellent low budget but next good Sony model that capture good 4k is ZV-E1, or a7s III.
Those APS-C sensor cameras between ZV-1 .. ZV-E1 or a7s III are not good in 4k. Need to look M4/3 like Panasonic GH5s if interested in smaller. Olympus has in theory good one but it may be problem to open OM-Log properly if need grading.

Sure A7S3 (or ZV-E1) is better in most uses, but for talking head YT videos is an overkill. And ZV-E10 is great starting point (also your phone camera too, but you need more light for the phone).
Most of the photo/video channels gonna push A1 down your throat whatever your camera plans are, but for basic YT ZV-E10 might be even overkill :D. Although lately it's around $500 (below if company purchase) so really nice option. Other brands got much less glass to chose from and/or is more expensive.

Rolling shutter is visible even while camera is on tripod. Makes image look restlessness and cheap. So when using ZV-E10, it is better to shoot FullHD and upscale to 4k before uploading TH-cam. That would solve that.
In TH-cam it does not matter is the footage shoot 4k or FullHD because of compression. Major benefit shooting 4k is editing when you can have digital zoom dolly effect and it is better for color keying. It however matter that video is upscaled to 4k because 4k is compressed to ~20Mbit/s what enough for good quality FullHD, and FullHD is compressed to ~5Mbit/s and that makes heavy artefacts.
So it is not the camera capturing 4k that matters, upscaling FullHD does the trick too.
My point was anyway the cost. ZV-E10 costs more than ZV-1 and it is not that that good in video. ZV-E10 value is interchangeable lens and it allow more blurred background, so it depends on requirements.
It is hundred percent likely that Sony product division run wild with one sensor for some years before realising ohh we are loosing the market now.
I think they are currently gaining market from Canon and Panasonic. And I expect that Panasonic is making counterattack soon.
Canon folks are likely too dumb to understand, that RF lens mount is not that interesting.

They got lineups for different segments and they don't upgrade camera every year like GoPro.
I’m holding on to my sigma fp , buying more L mount lenses. I think s5iix is much more valuable to invest.
It’s a great value for sure, I’ve been eyeballing it for no apparent reason. I’m still running a GH6 and BMPCC4K(I hate the person who named this) so I really don’t need an S5iix 🤔
