  • Throwback Thursday to another early Kalliope commission, Suite for Reed Quintet by Ian Wiese. Sonatina is the first of three movements, each contrasting movement is full of character and always fun to perform! This video was made for and presented at the virtual Double Reed Society Conference in 2021, back when we were almost fully vaccinated :) and the video was made by our original bass clarinetist Wolcott Humphrey.

The Kalliope Reed Quintet, founded in 2019, is the premiere reed quintet of New England. As a contemporary chamber ensemble and one of the first 50 reed quintets worldwide, their mission is to expand and diversify the reed quintet repertoire and to further strengthen the role of contemporary chamber music in the 21st century by presenting unique, engaging and educational programs to communities locally and globally.
Persevering through the many unexpected challenges of 2020-21, Kalliope commissioned over 15 new works including many minority composers, arranged many more, presented at multiple international festivals, and live streamed their 2020 summer concert series in collaboration with the Regent Theatre in Arlington, MA. Since then they perform regularly throughout the greater Boston area, toured in Sinaloa Mexico, and have given concerts and masterclasses throughout New England including Berklee School of Music, University of Rhode Island, UMass Dartmouth, and Dartmouth University.
