      As myself, i find hard to do math in high school when you don't know how deep mathematic is ... I suppose mathematical symbols should be more sensitized, even if at the high school stage the field is not studied deeply. This would prevent some from engaging in such a sector in a too naive way.

      @@biggledony2980 In the 18.06SC course on OCW Problem 10.1 states the following. *A is an m by n matrix of rank r. Suppose there are right sides b for which Ax = b has no solution.*
      The solution to this problem then goes on to say that the column space is not all of Rn, but it should say it's not all of Rm. I never checked if it was fixed.
      There's a more obvious error in the solution of problem 7.1, where the 23/4 should be negative. Again, don't know If they fixed it.

    I attended MIT from September 1971 to May 1975, lived in A-Entry in MacGregor House, and double majored in Math and Management. Prof. Strang was my professor for Linear Algebra. I was already familiar with matrices and determinants from Intermediate Algebra and Modern Math in high school. I can tell you that Prof. Strang was a phenomenal prof. I always paid attention in his class and received an "A." My favorite topics were solving systems of linear equations, and finding eigenvectors and eigenvalues. It's great to see that Prof. Strang is still going strong!

Not only has he contributed and kept up to pace with the modern evolution of Linear Algebra and its applications (for instance in data science, Machine/Deep Learning). He has put so much thought and effort in developing good ways to teach Linear Algebra. To introduce, after such a distinguished career, the idea to start with A=CR is so awesome. I agree, many things have happened in the last years, and linear algebra *has* become more beautiful, which gives me hope for the future, and we fully embrace new ways to make it happen. Maybe, someday, we'll have to face a much less beautiful concept of the universe, as some physicists are hinting at, so any pockets of beauty in mathematics are being cherished even more, in the meantime.

    • @mranonymous2729
      @mranonymous2729 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What are you talking about? Also the "beauty in math" argument is just that: beauty in a subject of logical descriptions. Don't make it an underlying principle of the subject. The best and most applicable (and very easy to apply) principle in my experience has been Occam's Razor, and the goal is to seek simplicity that is just enough.

    Signed up for a system biology class at Uni but the ways my lecturer explained Linear Algebra was just hopeless. Professor Strang's course literally saved my academic career and I am forever grateful for it.
