01-Introduction

Another sledgehammer to crack a nut! I can hear it! Well, I‟ll accept the sledgehammer criticism1 - or at least, let it be a fair-sized tack (or brad) hammer - but peanut? No! That I will not accept. But why not leave it to you, reader? See what you think.
I have not published this book for it to be added to that nice, untouched-pile languishing on the coffee-table. Far from it! I want it to be read and acted on. Dismissed as an alarmist I might be, derided as a grumpy, misguided curmudgeon I almost certainly will be, but I really do fear that the evangelical world is in a parlous state: coupled with its tinkering with the ekklēsia,2 it is facing nothing less than the loss of the gospel, and, ultimately, the replacing of the God of Scripture with a god of our imagination. Phew! Consequently, for me - having this sense of an approaching disaster - to keep silent at this time would be irresponsible in the extreme, and would deserve - and get - God‟s condemnation. Well... that‟s how I feel about what I write here
