Can We Learn From Luther’s ‘Ear’?
มุมมอง 2814 วันที่ผ่านมา
In 1517, in his Lectures on Hebrews, Martin Luther said that the most important organ a Christian possesses is his ear: God... requires only the ears... For if you ask a Christian what the work is by which he becomes worthy of the name ‘Christian’, he will be able to give absolutely no other answer than that it is hearing the word of God, that is, faith. Therefore the ears alone are the organs ...
Bonhoeffer’s ‘Stupidity’ and Ministerial Power in Christendom
มุมมอง 5514 วันที่ผ่านมา
It is almost a century since Dietrich Bonhoeffer was protesting about what he could see going on around him in the Third Reich under Adolf Hitler. In particular, on the tenth anniversary of Hitler becoming Chancellor of Germany, Bonhoeffer bravely published a circular to serve as a warning about the political and religious scene in Nazi Germany. One of the topics he discussed in that circular w...

14-Appendix 5: Gordon Fee
มุมมอง 313 หลายเดือนก่อน
Gordon Fee was careful to draw the biblical distinction between living in the flesh and living according to the flesh. The believer lives in the flesh, but not according to the flesh. Fee also spoke of two extremes in interpretation of life in the flesh. The first is to play down the power of the Spirit, and the other is triumphalism. Both are wrong.1 In my book I have been concerned to counter...
13-Appendix 4: David Black
มุมมอง 133 หลายเดือนก่อน
Black: The significance of the Pauline-weakness vocabulary without exception grows out of those concrete situations which he addressed in his letters. This is perhaps most clearly seen in the Corinthian letters, in which Paul finds himself forced to answer the criticisms of his opponents regarding his own weakness. If Paul had never been attacked so viciously by the opposition in Corinth, we mi...

11-Appendix 2: Scott Hafemann
มุมมอง 213 หลายเดือนก่อน
Hafemann spelled out the point at issue: Paul views himself in his apostolic calling not only as one who preaches the message of good news to the world, but equally important, as one appointed1 by God to be an embodiment of that gospel, called to reveal the knowledge of God by and through his very life. In short: „The apostolic message is embodied in the life of the apostle itself‟.3 That is wh...

09-The Last Word
มุมมอง 213 หลายเดือนก่อน
Naturally, I have said a great deal about weakness. After all, that‟s what my book has been about. I have claimed that, as Paul argued in 2 Corinthians, admission of a sense of weakness is an essential for every believer. And I stand by that. But - and here‟s the point I want to stress in this last chapter - weakness, in itself, is not enough. Nor is the admission of weakness. That is not the m...
08-The Upshot: The Lesson for Us
มุมมอง 193 หลายเดือนก่อน
Why did Paul devote so much of his second Corinthian letter to the subject of suffering, thus stressing his spiritual weakness? Why did he get so worked up about it? Why did he go on and on about it? Was it that important? And why did the Spirit record and preserve it in Scripture? I ask again: Was it that important? For the apostle - indeed, for the Holy Spirit (since he inspired Paul and made...

07-The Clinching Passage in 2 Corinthians
Brother David, again, you have exalted Christ and d his gospel. May the Lord continue to bless you and your ministry.
Thank you for your encouragement
Thank you for addressing this and for bringing it out into the open in a very dignified manner, particularly when he didn't address you in person, truth needs to come out and people like yourself are positioned to speak the truth as God leads. I don't know the church or the preacher, but going of what you have described and relayed in his preaching, then I do not agree with him, in fact he doesn't recognise and know the God I recognise and know, and have a deep meaningful relationship with, and serve as my Lord and Saviour. There are a lot of "Moral" people going to Hell! Possibly this person would be depicted in the series you did on The Book of Jude on Sermon Audio, Just my thoughts. The scripture I was thinking about in reference to yourself was this one for 1 Peter 2 v 27, But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
Much appreciate
Thank you for helping me see and most importantly hear beyond the Covenant theology and embrace the inspired text.
Thank you, you old fellow-warrior
Amen! Happy Thanksgiving Bro. David from the US.
Thank you. But we don't have Thanksgiving here!
Sad. Listening again. His Calvinism can’t be hidden. If you are not living a holy life you are not justified! What! He is mixing works and grace. Such is why I have tasted of NC theology and found it wanting. Does no distinguish the salvation of the soul (temporal) from that of the Spirit ( eternal)? Why not? It is right in front of us.
Would you kindly expound Heb. 12:12-14 for me?
Wonderful encouragement for the believers under the strife imposed by those law preachers.
Brother Gay is so clear on the law why or why can’t he see to be justified is a present tense reality not a past tense finished event.
Where have I ever given the impression that it is not?
Fascinating connection between the sabbath and the Lord’s supper!
Very good discourse on proper way to witness for Christ Jesus.
Excellent again David. Thank you sir.
Drop the sir!
"Obedience." Very good message. Trust and obey, for there is no other way to be happy in Jesus but to trust and obey.
Thank you, I will definitely go on listening, and maybe get your book. Seems to me that you have been a prolific teacher over the years shearing all that the Lord has instilled inside of you. Cultivating weakness is how I would sum up my walk with the Lord, weakness is best, hopefully by the grace of God I can live it 🙏🕊
Same here! Thank you for writing.
Jesus has always been. Before Moses.
‘Moses was second to none’ He was also there at the Transfiguration. Jesus said of John the Baptist “Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.” (And Elijah who was to come, Elijah also was at the Transfiguation.)
Hello brother David. Question please. What is the best book or two you would recommend on Church History? Thanks in advance. Steve.
Do you mean in addition to mine? Broadbent's Pilgrim Church and stuff by Verduin.
Amen and Amen my faithful brother. My love and prayers are for you always. Steve.
Good to hear from you again -- and thank you as always
Stunning. Thank you
Thank you.
So my understanding of what you are saying is that Jesus propitiated the sins of the elect on the cross when he died as a one off event. Regarding Hebrews 2:17, there are major issues with the Greek word hilaskesthai being translated as made propitiation. Firstly, look at the immediate context. In 2:14/5/6, Jesus died to destroy the one holding the power of death for those who feared death all of their lives, that is the seed of Abraham. Then at the start of 2:17, we start with a therefore. All of this beforehand was so that, in taking on flesh and blood and dying, He may become a merciful and faithful high priest. Now, when did He become this high priest? According to this author, after His resurrection. Now being this high priest, He can now hilaskesthai for the sins of the people. This hilaskesthai, in the Greek, is in the present tense, therefore, it is taking place at the time the author is writing it, which is long after Jesus's death on the cross. Being in this present tense, it cannot be translated as made propitiation. Now "to make propitiation' is in the present tense but that would mean that this is something that Jesus is doing after the cross meaning that Jesus continues to propitiate God for sin. However, this is not your understanding of Jesus propitiating the wrath of God as a one off event on the cross. Therefore, in my opinion, translating hilaskesthai as made/make propitiation in your understanding does not work. What does work, both in the Greek and contextually, is to translate its 'to be gracious' or 'to be propitious', where being propitious is in conjunction with being merciful. This, as you know, is how the word is translated in Luke 18:13.
Thanks for the message.
Where does it say it is fulfilled in believers?
Paul found it so (Rom. 7:22),
How do Christians then relate to the Old Testament Scriptures? (2 Timothy 3:16-17). I agree with you but how do we see or relate to the other 39 books of the Word? As shadow, as type, as promise only?
Big question requires bigger answer than I can give here. Rom. 15:4; 1 Cor. 10:1-12; 2 Tim. 3:15-17 etc show that all Bible has lessons for believers. But we must read the OT in the light of the change of covenants. Many of my works use this principle -- see my latest series: 'Thoughts on Zechariah' on my sermonaudio.com page.
I would love to have a month with this man.
David, I have put together a few challenging observations regarding your interpretation of this verse and Romans 3:25 if that may be of interest to you. If so, how would I get them to you.

Why does NC theology dance so closely with Calvinism?
Does it? I am five-point in soteriology, but do not accept (putting it mildly) Calvin's view of the law, baptism, Supper, church...
Oh, my friend, what an encouragement in this discourse. Also to understand the Apostle John's linguistic style has helped with understanding some of his writing. Greatly appreciated.
I notice that the vast majority of your defence of propitiation etc is purely theological philosophy and not scriptural.
Have you read the whole book? I expressly stated that I was not going to repeat the scriptural arguments for propitiation -- citing volumes which do -- but press home the vital -- dire -- consequences of Wright's view. My book -- as title explains -- was not a tome on propitiation, but a response to Wright.
Thanks for this clarity by showing the difference
Thanks David, looking forward to the next discourse.
From Toronto, thanks.
Thank you. But one or two things to put right next time.
It would seem the resurrection life of Christ a better way to describe the obedience life of Christ
Please expand -- this would be profitable.
David, I have never heard the difference between the "desire" of God and the "decree" of God. This is of tremendous help to me keep different texts in exegetical correctness. Now I can look at those texts of God's desire, and not explain it away with systematic theology. Thank you sir.
You should read my 'The Gospel Offer is Free'. Thank you again.
I will get that book.

Need to hear it out.
Excellent David. Great explanation of the text.
Why can’t this Sabbath be the 7th when God rested from His works? The future 1000 years. That is the simplest most literal explanation! Why must we make everything about being saved and make it mystical?
Alas, we don't agree here.
This is one of your best sermons David. There can be no greater motive to strive to be Christ like than his electing love. Aj
Easy to preach -- but it's the experience!

Good to know -- and thank you for taking time to encourage. Donkeys can travel far on a carrot.
So refreshing! In a time where there is so many varying eschatological views, it is so good to hear the simplicity of the gospel in the coming of Christ, and the present expectation. Thank you brother.
Simplicity is a great word. We are experts at complication. The gospel is for the small man/woman not just the double Phd.
Great commentary on this verse.
