I have always felt this way...it's not a detachment from them, but you want to give them their space. It's difficult to confront, but, as suggested, often something people do awkwardly....so tough.

Words can't reconcile such deep-seeded anguish. Simple consoling and presence is all that is required. Knowing you love them and the understanding that they too feel your love having been there is enough.

It’s such a sad story. Neil was blessed to have lived a life that most of us can only dream of but in the end he gave it all up to be with his young daughter Olivia. Neil has said he missed so many milestones in his first daughters life (Selena) trying to make RUSH successful and give his family a good life but he was always away from home. When Selena and Jackie passed he was left with this unbelievable guilt and he wanted to end it all but his current wife Carrie Nuttall pulled Neil back from the brink of despair. Once they married and had Olivia Neil wasn’t about to miss out on time spent with her so he walked away from RUSH. It’s sad because after Neil gave the world himself for 40+ years he was only left with about a years worth of cancer free time to spend with his daughter. Most of us never knew Neil but boy what a respected musician he was......almost divine . He will be sorely missed.

Faron Taylor With respect those are not my thoughts....those were Neil’s. Without trying to come across as sarcastic I’d trust reading his written words than words from someone who claims to be a close acquaintance, relative or family friend. I’m not saying you are not one of those people but it’s just hard to trust your words as genuine when they are contradictory to what I’ve read from the man himself. People claimed to be related to famous people all the time so this is nothing new but the timing is kinda cruel.

I was gutted at Neil's tragedies which put Rush on the shelf understandably. In the timeframe, I hoped Pink Floyd would record another album but David Gilmour put the band on indefinite hiatus when he had four more children with his current wife Polly Samson and Pink Floyd were technically done (not counting Live 8 reunion nor The Endless River which was finished in 2014 as a tribute to Rick Wright).

I read Ghost Rider after I lost my wife in ‘10 when our bike hit a deer. I highlited and made notes in the book when I found things that resonated with me. I cried with some of his passages, too. I first saw Rush on Don Kirschner’s Rock Concert back in ‘74 or so. I was in high school and was standing in my parents dining room, watching them play on a B&W TV. It Changed the course of my music life. I took up bass after that and played for years. Always loved Rush. Oh, and I bought a bottle of The Macallan after reading Neils book.

These three have always been unique in the music industry. Not only were/are they 3 of the most talented individuals to grace the stage, they were also best friends. Not many other bands would have put their craft on hold while a member took time to get himself together after that great loss, speaks volumes about their relationship with each other. So many other groups would have told him to kick rocks, replaced him and moved on. Not these 3. They were family.

Not to be facetious here, but in a way, they were like a modern-day Three Musketeers - "all for one, and one for all", that's how close they were to each other. That kind of relationship, especially in the music business, is super-rare.

I know. The genius behind the band was humility, camaraderie and three guys each with a great sense of humor. They were friends, always. They enjoyed each others' company and knew when to give each other space. All of them worked hard at being the best professional musicians they could be (and all succeeded wildly) while avoiding the pitfalls of being rock stars. They took their music and their fans seriously but not themselves. They stuck together through all the years of bad press and snubbing by the music industry, eventually, belatedly, getting into the R&R Hall of Fame. Calling Neil "The New Guy" always made me smile, too. I had never in my life shed tears over the passing of someone I had never met. His passing caused me to. Neil was a giant in every way, an example to be emulated, someone that never stopped trying to improve, to grow, to evolve. He will be sorely missed. Love your post.
