You legend, no one got a review yet!
Laptop itself with 12th Gen processor doesn't seem to match the hype though. I was hoping for a review like this on battery life. I will go ahead with an 11th Gen XPS 13 at a massive discount.

  • @kelvinyonger8885
    @kelvinyonger8885 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Battery life can improve on a laptop post-release, from driver/BIOS updates. If they aren't designed well they might leave devices on, burning power. For example, people who run Linux on older ThinkPads (thus needing to configure everything themselves) see huge battery life improvements from fixing config/driver errors (on the order of 2x). Obviously it shouldn't be *that* bad on a modern device, but it's still possible.

@@TechAdventure1 I had the xps13 plus oled variant. Laptop was awesome. I enjoyed the keyboard, build quality was awesome. Screen… holy sh#^. It was honestly really great. Battery life wasn’t the greatest. Maybe 5 hours on better battery with screen brightness increased a 40% after enabling. This was with light use with excel and a pdf open. But I did opt for the highest config available.
Watching movies on the screen I watched 2 episodes of 1883 and dropped about 21%. I’m not exact guru with computers but seems the battery would have been closer to an 8 hour mark with just watching videos.
I work in a construction type field so my main reason for returning was 1) way to nice for the environment I was in . I couldn’t imagine bringing that to a roof in the elements.
And 2) I really would have enjoyed a longer battery life. I did reduce the resolution in the field and was getting closer to 7.5 hours… but I can get close to 12 doing the same type of deals with my use case on this Thinkpad.
Laptop was also a bit warm. But nothing that bothered me. I didn’t cap any kind of power because i don’t know how to do all that lol. All In all great laptop. But just wasn’t a good fit for my case. I purchased out of want because it looked amazing, and didn’t factor in everything.
Also, Touch Bar was fine. Responsive. I liked it much more than the Touch Bar on the previous MacBooks I had . No issues with speakers . And The trackpad was the best I’ve personally used on a windows laptop. Right up there with MacBooks which I have used .

The U-Series is still really not out in any laptop at this time so here is hoping for that.

I'm thinking about getting either the X1 Carbon Gen 10 or T14 Gen 3... was favoring the T14 but since it has a smaller battery (53 vs 57) I'm a bit disappointed.
I'm wondering how the i7 1265u (an option for the T14) would perform in battery since it's a 15w... but then again, with battery modes you can already make these 28w P chips be 15w = back to the review results... I'm so lost haha
From Lenovo's own PSREF the differences between Gen 2 vs Gen 3 are not that bad, even with their crappy benchmark standard/approach, but what REALLY bothered me is how bad the T14 Gen 3 is compared to the X1 Carbon Gen 10. Based on "psref" specs alone (using the similar configurations) T14 would be half the results here = big WTF
I'm really trying to play around with configs and see "benefits" in other areas but for 2k+ euros these machines should be crazy solid
Wondering how different the latest Dell Latitudes/Precisions would be compared to this...

The 10th Gen X1 Carbon does come with 2 display options (both 4K) that have 500 nits of brightness. One of them is Glossy (which is a NO go for me) and the other is an anti-glare screen but both of those options are an add-ons that add $240-ish or more to the price of the laptop. I'm wondering if the lowish battery life can be attributed to the 12th gen P chipset. I've heard other say that the efficiency cores are NOT giving them improved battery life as one would expect.

I think after M1 came out to the world everybody sees that laptop differently as M1 provide something that really Intel or AMD laptop PC could not provide. M1 provides normal use people less heated laptop and less energy-consuming laptop and also silent laptop. So, we may expect something close to those experiences that Apple provides today. It seems that still Intel 12th Gen can not do as much as M1 does. Then, I believe the best timing for the new Intel laptop with a noticeably better experience should be for the next Gen... I hope.

I just received this yesterday - and it seems like there's a huge design flaw when you opt for touch-screen. When the laptop gets hot, the warm air from the exhaust goes to the screen, and is triggering phantom screen presses on the touch screen. Basically, the computer thinks I'm spam tapping the bottom of my screen, making the computer useless until I get it cooled off.

Yeah well apples done is really something, but value is defined by a multitude of factors. One of those, is subjective. Meaning the buyer will imagine their life with the device and how they feel during that time will affect their purchase emotionally. That's not to discount what buyers go through. In fact Apple have capitalized on the emotional elements of a purchase for decades.
In other words, even though this laptop isn't as efficient as the Apple m1 laptops, it still has tremendous value to certain buyers. Including myself.

I own a Thinkpad X1 Carbon (6th gen)...Generally speaking there are many things to like about it. Lightweight, Matte display, great port selection but reliability wise it's been the WORST laptop when it comes to reliability (e.g., HDMI died at 13 months (just outside of warranty, touchpad disappears periodically and it requires a reboot to get it back, etc.)). And by the way Lenovo acknowledges that the HDMI failure is the result of a Lenovo design flaw with the motherboard (Fix requires replacing motherboard) but they REFUSE to address it even though mine failed 1 month beyond the warranty....That's a deal breaker for me. I'll NEVER purchase another Lenovo system because of that. I reward vendors who support their products and do the right thing by their user. Lenovo FAILS miserably on this measure.

    • @TechAdventure1
      @TechAdventure1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Hmm XPS 15 is larger than 13. Is portability super important? There is a 1.5LB difference between 13 and 15.
I recently picked up the MB Pro 14. It's really something...but opening office apps is slow for me (again. I had this issue with M1 Pro 13). Once the app is loaded in memory it's fine. So if you go that route you may want to consider 16 or 32 GB of RAM. And unlike most Windows machines, Macs depreciate slower. So the added RAM would further slow the value burn.

Intel 12th gen laptop battery sucks but we need TB4 for these kinds of premium Ultrabook due to limited ports. Otherwise, AMD should be a better alternative as It has been proven in recent G14 reviews that AMD Rembrandt mobile CPU has even better efficiency then last gen AMD.

AMD Ryzen series 6000 can normally (if implemented by the manufacturer) have USB4 which is TB3 compatible. So not the latest TB4 but its not like TB4 brought that much improvements anyway.
So yeah you can use TB docks and even eGPU with AMD chips from now on.
Too bad lot of PCs will still use 5000 series this year. We could see a lot of PC (especially gamer PCs) switching to Ryzen 6000 H/HS/HX series but it seems the selection for 6800U will be limited.
That is annoying... I was waiting for this year to upgrade my Surface Pro 5, I need at least TB3 but there is no way I wanted the 11th gen Intel quad-core chips.
I was really expecting Intel 12th gen to be good because I knew those would be the more widespread and they are in terms of perfs. But it seems Intel redlined them and sacrificed efficiency dramatically. So now I have choice between those toasters and Ryzen 6000U that are almost non-existent in ultrabooks right now :(

Secondly, obviously the battery life. I believe that the intel gen 12 was designed for better battery life and power but this looks one way. I agree about the power and speed but at what cost ? Intel smoke bombed everyone with their 12th gen. They focused on performance only and talked about their efficiency cores but never talked about the impact on battery.

    这电池太烂了呀兄弟们,简直就是半成品...... 唯一的希望就是等后面更新系统......要是他不更新,那我为什么不买性能更好的本,反正都一样得插电用,商务了个寂寞属于是.......

Way to true. The battery life absolutely sucks. Intel is just so far behind........ everyone should just ditch them. And to call them upper or even a mid-level laptop at this point would just be false.

At least we get power...and many manufacturers have done a good job of being creative with design (ZenBook Duo, Razer Book, ZenBook S). But I'm with you - they just run too hot and battery life suffers.

What's the chance that your issues with battery life could be down to Windows 11? Pretty big if you ask me, this being an all new CPU architecture. Same with brightness. Sounds like the OS is messing it up.

I wish I had the answer. I reached out to Lenovo for some help related to all of my findings. We're working on it but they're not commenting on battery life.

@@TechAdventure1 I've seen people comment about worse battery life on the gen 9 as well after upgrading to Win 11. There isn't any way you can downgrade to Win 10 to see if the battery behaves better?

Intel marketing is full of poopoo. I knew the E cores were pure marketing to outdo the number of cores AMD provide. And the quiet launch of these new laptops prove me right. More powerfull but not the ultra efficient processors they told us. After all, the 12900k spike at 350w, when the 5950x spike at 140.

I've been scratching my head about this launch. I mostly focusing on the laptops, and the releases are all over the map in terms of timing and publicity. Apple sure has Intel scrambling.

lenovo is like bmw for laptops. they don't change things that work. if anyone knows better keyboard in laptop please let me know. I've recently bought and tried out samsung book2 pro. the key travel is shallow. lenovo keyboards are just perfections. what they suck at last 10 years is battery life and panels.

Really disappointed with Intel's power hungry 12th gen CPUs when you see what Apple has achieved with their M1 chips 😐. As someone who uses Linux I can't wait until Asahi Linux matures and is ready to be a daily driver.

Watch my video of the Samsung Galaxy Book2 Pro. I'm working on a battery test tonight. I think it'll be right up there with M1 and unless you're doing video editing you won't see a difference in power
