- We’ve realized since joining #ChiOmega at Baylor, that a lot of you, especially those from foreign countries, have some interesting #assumptions about them from TV or movies, etc! So, we invited past leaders of sorority chapters to help us set the record straight!

Did you know that the root of Sorority is "sororitas" which means sisterhood or sisters? We asked y’all to send in any assumptions that you have about sororities, and the stereotypes that you've seen or heard about out there, and a lot of you were actually sending in the same ones! 😂
We are only three months in to our #sorority life, and we can obviously only speak on our limited personal experiences at Baylor. Going in, we were not completely sure exactly what being in a sorority entailed, what recruitment was like, etc.
Since we are still learning about sororities at #college, we asked a leader from another sorority at Baylor, Hannah, to join us. Also, we invited two of our friends, Ari and Dana, who attended and graduated from TCU and Texas A&M respectively, to share their knowledge and experiences in their sororities as well.
While we know that not all sorority chapters run things "exactly" the same, the purpose of this video is to give you an idea of what they are, and dispel some of the misconceptions out there. Filming this video with Anna Joy Hannah, Ari, and Dana was very informative!
It was super interesting for us to hear everyone’s unique perspective on sororities based on their own experiences vs how we see our sorority life at Baylor!

@@kierstenanawalt9702 I watched a video about this girl being rejected from a few sororities and she had an amazing personality. And I wasn't the only one who thought so, there were thousands of comments wondering why she didn't get in and said that she would be better off without joining one.

The different sororities all have different values.
A lot of sororities only get a certain number of people they can take during recruitment. So they can meet girls that are absolutely amazing with a great personality but are not the best fit for that certain sorority. Personally, I got rejected from 13 of them and found the perfect house for me

the one about a rich girl being in charge or that everyone in them has money? alot of my sisters struggle financially and get put on payment plans to pay dues. also my sorority is the smallest on my campus and the least expensive. personally in mine the people in power arent the most “well off” some people have more than others do but its not just one woman who has tons of money controlling everything because it is a process of how things come to be.
Chelly Berry so you admit that your group is the small one that doesn’t have money and that’s why your group is different? I’m going to take a wild guess and say the bigger chapters wth more money in them are comprised of more well off people and run by rich kids who get to walk through life without the anxiety of not knowing where your next meal might come from.
Christopher Rohn Christopher Rohn Christopher Rohn Christopher Rohn actually no thats false as well. i know women who have dropped all the chapters on my campus and havent even accepted their bid or continued the recruitment process. honestly there is only one sorority on my campus that i would think of in this way, and none of the others are like that. no im not saying im in the poor chapter anf thats why we are different our actual dues are cheaper than any other sorority on campus as well. alot of college kids where i go struggle financially overall not just my group of sisters. i see it everywhere and in every organization. and because some people begin to struggle financially they drop their sorority or fraternity. it happens in every organization. not every sorority on my campus besides mine is run by well off people. there is a ton of diversity on my campus which im thankful for. some other colleges arent this way at all ive seen chapters from a ton of different colleges. like i said every chapter is different. not all of them are comprised of rich or well off women. i was giving the counter argument to it. some people do have money and dont have to struggle but some do struggle, and i bet some struggle in the more expensive ones as well. sororities really arent the stereotype i see in movies or on tv when i got to my school and im thankful for that, but again that may not be the case for every college or every organization.

To pretend hazing and racial discrimination doesn't exist in the greek system is irresponsible. It may not "be a thing" in your chapter, at your school, at this time, but it is still happening. Wouldn't it be better to be honest and note that that there are some bad apples, that every school is different, and it is important to research your specific chapter? Even the frats the sororities associate with can be important. I went to a school where a frat "boiled" their pledges, sending them to the hospital with 3rd degree burns, and got community service for regularly drugging and assaulting co-eds at their parties (allegedly).
Agreed!!! Don't know why they're choosing to ignore facts because their specific chapter apparently doesn't do anything negative. Hard to get the truth from girls in sororities when they'r still in them/just joined
Hazing in my country means you have to get hurt to enter an fraternity/sorority lol
But you need to understand that when people and the media talk about hazing and racial discrimination, they always talk about it being an issue within the Greek Life system as a whole. They paint the entire system with a single brush, even though there are groups that don’t haze and are racial diverse. Also, it paints local Greek life groups negatively too (ones that are just found at their certain college or region I.E. non-National ones).
They didn’t need to talk about that stuff BECAUSE it’s one of the main things that already comes to people’s minds when they think of Greek Life. It’s also not their experience, which was the point of this video. To answer assumptions with their own experiences.

Sure, hazing and other petty stuff happens but then again you're basing your perception of Greek life on indignation that it does happen, even once, regardless if precautions and standards have changed.

I feel like there was a missed opportunity to really dive into the race issue within sororities. I mean, there is a reason why many campuses have created multicultural Greek councils. The Panhellenic council is quite exclusionary by selection and prohibitive by cost to have diversity. Then again, they aren’t looking for diversity in the first place when they are trying to find “like-minded people”.

This sounds harsh, but I think these girls are delusional and perhaps insensitive. They seem to be the type of girls who indeed to every single one of those “misconceptions” they read outloud.
FYI, the “drama and everyone hating everyone” thing is almost always true. It can and will happen. These are college girls who are just now entering adulthood and just branching out their teen years. I’d like to sit here and say everyone matures after they graduate high school, but that’s sadly not the case for many people.
This probably should have been "The Truth About Our Sorority," because they just got into their sorority; I go to a big state university, and some these things are sadly true, even with school-approved sororities/fraternities. The title could have just been clickbait, but I definitely found it misleading.

Hazing is definitely still a thing. But I guess it depends on what school/organization. Someone recently died from my HBCU bc of an incident of hazing.

They're really ignoring the issue of sororities and drinking and partying culture. Anyone agree?
The specific sorority they chose at Baylor doesn’t really have that problem so it makes sense that they don’t have an issue with that. Baylor has very strict alcohol rules and a lot of sororities at Baylor don’t allow their members to be in pictures posted on social media with alcohol in it. Even if you aren’t drinking it you can’t be in the picture in it. Not that there isn’t partying here, it’s just that it’s more lowkey because people don’t want to get in trouble
Depends on the school. My school is so small and it seems like their school is strick with alcohol rules, as is my sorority perosnally. I think at large universities this definitely occurs and it is unfortunate and with my sorority you can be asked to leave if your under the influence underage or if your wearing letters drinking. It depends on the school and organization, and chi o at one school isnt the same chi o at another school they all vary!
Drinking and party culture is more so an American college thing than a Greek life thing. At my college, the rowdies parties were always the ones that were thrown by the sports teams.
There's nothing wrong with drinking or partying and people do that regardless of whether they're apart of greek life or not.

I am just a little confused because Alpha Kappa Alpha (D9) is a part of a different council but that was only motioned and not explained in depth. As a fellow D9 member, I think their should have been a bigger emphasize on the difference between NPHC and Panhellenic, and why NPHC exists. AKA was the first African American sorority founded in 1908 on a historically black university because of the exclusion of black individuals in white institutions.
Edit: AKA also isn't the only historically black sorority. So it would have been awesome to see representation of other D9 sororities among the huge selection of Panhellenic sororities. Although Panhellenic says race isn't an issue, it clearly use to be (hence why NPHC exist) and should a topic to address.
Anna Villarreal I was literally waiting for her to answer some of the questions from the perspective of someone from a historically black sorority. She was really just letting the other girl answer but her face gave it away that there are clear differences.
I was waiting for a Multicultural sorority to be involved too. i was excited when i saw an AKA, but she rarely spoke about D9, she spoke about it a little but not in detail :( and there was no multicultural aspect either.

When they made the comparison to high school sports... idk where they went to school but you don’t have to pay to play sports at ANY school around me. Even if they do have to pay, it’s probably not thousands of dollars like sororities
For me it wasn’t like monthly dues like a sorority. For my dance team it was paying for the uniform, any events we did, and dues required to enter into dance competitions. Monthly dues for sorority aren’t just giving them money because. It covers paying rent for the chapter room, hosting events, making shirts, etc. It’s paying money for the stuff you are participating in. It also goes to supporting each groups philanthropy. Like my sorority helps domestic violence victims. Also, I’m not rich i have no money 😂 I’m given financial aid

Lucky! The cheer team at my school cost $7000 at the start of the season and $400 every month, the football team pays at least a few grand, fine arts kids pay around $1000 for everything

This was such a good video! When I was in my sorority I just loved talking to all my non-affiliated friends about their assumptions and inevitably proving them wrong. I think it depends on where you are but my sorority was so inclusive and positive and some days I wish I could go back and re-live the whole experience! I hope you continue to love and be thankful for your Greek life experience! 😁♥️

"some sororities are more popular" Yall know that is FACTS. The bottom tier sororities are the girls that top tier rich sororities don't accept based on financials and on looks and on popularity. The top tiers are the ones who more fraternities are willing to have date nights and socials with. Sororities ARE and ALWAYS will be a popularity contest.

as an international Asian student who joined a Panhellenic sorority, i didn't even have these assumptions when i first joined. i honestly didn't know wtf i was doing since no one in my family had been in a social sorority or fraternity before. the "some sororities are more popular than others" thing is pretty much true though, like there's really no way around that. i agree that it's dumb, but it's unfortunately true. mine was considered the least popular at my university just because we had the most genuine, diverse group of girls and we weren't all hot blondes.
hazing still exists, but at least at my school, if any sorority or fraternity was found doing it, they got fucked up the wazoo. like, nationals shut them down, the school got rid of the chapter, everything. my sorority was very strict about it, like we got reminded about what hazing is all the time, we were threatened with action if anyone was found doing it, etc. we actually had a fraternity get shut down because Russians hacked the email of a White House staffer who was a frat alum of our school, and they found evidence in his emails that the fraternity was hazing behind the scenes.
also, i don't know why people think we're like secret societies or we do witchcraft or something HAHA like it isn't that deep....we just aren't allowed to talk about the details of our rituals (meaning our weekly meetings) and recruitment process.

Got initiated into ChiO (not at Baylor) loved it and everything but ran into some financial problems and had to resign. I really wanted to stay and till this day I am very sad about it. Once I resigned the girls changed and didn't talk to me anymore including my big, so the part where once you are initiated you are a ChiO for life doesn't apply to my college and I wish it wasn't that way.

Hazing was banned in my sorority, but there was still bullying and gatekeeping. They did protect pledges, you got to know the bad stuff after you already joined lol

If you are paying thousands of dollars to be on high school sports team, there is a problem. It was completely free in my state high schools. I don't even know how a private high school could justify thousands of dollars to play soccer...an Olympic coach? Gucci uniforms? Fiji water ice baths? 90 minute massages after practice?

This was a really great video. I am a black girl who was in a Panhellenic (usually majority white) sorority and I think this was a very honest video. Great job getting unique girls and an NPHC sorority member!!! Very mature choices when you have such a HUGE audience
