  • We discuss a great new dual-biography from Camille Peri, and some classical gassicals from RLS himself!
Here's a link to my new piece at SPECTATOR. Good luck getting past the paywall!

Reading Kidnapped in my dotage I had the same reaction you did to Treasure Island, total delight. Vive RLS!

In my 30s I read all the Stevenson I could find!
One line from Treasure Island is burned in my mind: "Dead men don't bite, you know!"
Try the essays and travel writing, plus fiction like The Master of Ballantrae.

And if they do bite, get the hell out of there fast! s

I definitely think Stevenson's Calvinist nanny influenced Jekyll and Hyde. The whole idea of the sinful nature etc. have parallels in the book, even if it might be in a satirical way.
Loved 'Treasure Island' too. I love the fact that he was primarily interested in telling a good story.

I was surprised how much fun Treasure Island was, and Long John Silver was a much more interesting character and played a much smaller part than in the movies... s

My son read Tressure Island with an unfiltered eye: he enjoyed it.
Robert Newton's potrayal of Silver was nothing like the book and wss respondible for all the "Aaaars" in pirates since.

Yeah I saw that one too. The actual Long John Silver character is less obtrusive and more fun in the novel... s

My favorite version of Dr. Jekyll is Jean Renoir's Mysterious Dr. Cordelier (I think that's the name), starring Jean-Louis Barrault. The book had a profound impact on me. I need to reread it. Still sucking the marrow bones of Bovary.

I love Renoir but don't know that one.
I quite like the old Mamoulian version with Fredric March...s

Disney was the reason i had absolutely no interest in RLS as a kid. Even now, i feel an aversion to his stories because of the Disney and Warner Bros versions of the stories.
But alas, that is about to change. Just recently procured a book containing Kidnapped, Master of Ballantrae, and The Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, will be I'll tuck into those soon.

Yeah I think about doing just that, but spend so much of my day dealing with one crazy dog and one obstreperous parakeet I just don't know if there's enough time left in the day! s
