- Opening The Engine Of A Mega Ship In Emergency | Piston Pull | Merchant Navy
Welcome back to another day at sea . In this video I will be taking you along with me onboard Munkebo Maersk to the port of Zeebruge Belgium .
Here unexpectedly, we faced an emergency situation wherein the wind picked upto 40-50 knots without warning . We were lucky that our ship got pushed inside rather than outside the jetty . The ships around us
were not that lucky & needed shore assistance to stay alongside safely .
After these tough days on the ship , we had a major maintenance job on the Main Engine of our ship . ( A piston pull )
Basically the marine engineers took out one of the pistons of the engine & replaced it with a new piston delivered by the company . The entire process of the piston change was captured on the GoPro in the form of a timelapse . I even caught hold of the engineer incharge of the operation to answer a few burning questions like how did he assess , why the piston was needed to be replaced .
This video will be beneficial to alot of aspiring Merchant Navy & Marine Engineering Cadets .
Enjoy the video & don't forget to give it a big thumbs up if you found the video informative .
Also for those who are new to the channel - I am Karanvir Singh Nayyar , a third officer in Maersk , vlogging my Life At Sea Journey.

As a marine engineer this video brings a big smile on my face. I have always wanted to show my folks some of the jobs we do onboard. Thank you very much bhai for this wonderful video. 😊👍
So happy this Video can be shown to your family ❤️
@@KaranvirSinghNayyar onboard my prev vsl, when we were changing a unit's liner (MAN B&W 12K98MC-C), I was secretly hoping that someone would make a video of the entire procedure. Alas! couldn't get it done. It requires a lot of determination, dedication and devotion to go beyond the call of duty to make such interesting and exciting videos. So kudos to you bro. Keep it rolling. God bless. Safe seas 🙌
I love how the engine room is so well laid out and the Engine piston replacement is not needing external service.
Yup all self reliant
could you imagine calling a breakdown truck from the middle of the Atlantic Ocean
I've seen inside some ships where replacing certain components required holes to be cut in the side of the hull.
These ships is the last bastion of Right to Repair...
Can you imagine if they had the same issues that we face in the rest of the soceity?
"Oh our piston is broken, you will have to wait for a certified Wartsila or whomeever technician to get to you, have fun drifting the ocean for the next 2-3 weeks, or you can buy a brand new engine and have it swapped out in a couple of months for the same price as the piston."
Good news is, we are getting the same rights as these sailors have in the rest of the soceity, the fight is going our way!
@@CMDRSweeper industy in general is big on repair
Great video! Thank you, your fellow crewmates, and all of the logistics personnel across our worlds seas and highways. Specifically in this case though ,you lot seem to be a highly professional and motivated group. Your ship and the workmanship show your skill and pride in what you are doing. So many people coming together from around the globe in this video and seemingly happily working together to stay safe, keep up the ship well, move the freight professionally. All in one video, it really is impressive.
Hi Karanvir. Thanks again for creating such wonderful content. My only suggestion is that you move the camera slower when panning or tilting and when you go to a static shot, please hold the camera on the shot for three or four seconds. Thank you so much
Very good video sir, I enjoyed it. I don’t know how you can spend so long on the ship without going crazy but thanks for delivering our goods.
I worked at the Long Beach, California Mersk terminal as a Crane Mechanic and I always wanted to see the Engine Room of one of those BIG container ships, but I never got the chance to get inside, so getting the chance to actually see the inside of one of those huge engines on a You Tube Video is very interesting for me!
Being a Marine Engineering student your Engine room videos excites me alot. No doubt that your all videos are extremely amazing but some of your last videos are one of my favorites of your channel.
Specially that cooking video ♥️
So so so happy to hear that Amanur !! Thank you for tuning back ❤️
I really enjoy these video's. Really makes me think I've made the wrong career choice. I appreciate these video's are only a glimpse into hours, days, weeks and months spend at see but I have to admit merchant navy was something I did consider all those years ago. KS you look so completely happy with your choice of career. Well dne for going after something you enjoy.
Thanks Phil
The timelapse I saw 1:32 was amazing😍! The rays of the sun coming through the clouds were looking like natural spotlight ❤🤍!!!
Yes it was one of the best I captured ❤️

Awesome that you could capture the piston replacement... Loved the video Karan bhai... Ans yes the liner is very important in the engine... If it's damaged it could really catastrophic... Until next time take care and stay safe...
Thanks Ajith for tuning back in
Brings back memories! At least you got to work with the 2/M a bit, I was thrown right in!
Right in ?
@@KaranvirSinghNayyar “thrown right in” meaning I went on vacation as a 3/m, came back as 2/m, no training or help with the previous 2/m
Wow, this is a great vlog, you are all a great team, thanks for sharing and good luck 👍🍀
Thank you
I have served in the Army, Navy, and RAF, they are all different. The biggest difference is that the Merchant Navy crew will Jury Rig anything and everting, which is somewhat true for the Royal navy but not to the same degree. The other forces Army and RAF because they are basic land based, they will indent for a spare part then sit back and wait until it arrives. The best example are the crew washing machines, and tumble dryers, on board the ginger beers (engineers) will strip it down and repair it, whereas the RAF and ARMY will either scrap it or put it to one side awaiting spare parts. Everything on board a vessel can usually be repaired by the engineers, well done lads.
Really enjoyed the video hats off to you, your determination nd will power towards your work even at your body's worst you were committed at your work plus being very positive nd active. Salute to seafarers like you 🎉🎉💐💐💯💯

Are bunkering always done through barges? Does any port have fuel lines on berth?? Nice video btw
Barges all the time
Small port .Think there is only 2/3 container ship berths. Once again a very good video
Yes very small port
Thank you for another great video! How was Zeebrugge? Was it less of a wait and/or a quicker loading operation there? Except for waiting for the wind to let up ofcourse. :) I am so impressed with all the dedication of everyone working on that piston pull. Wow, the size and weight of that! Truly impressive. How many 'spares' does the ship carry? So happy to see everyone was vaccinated! I just got my third booster. Like you say: Safety First. LOL.
It was very slow operation Tina
We carry sufficient spares
I enjoy watching your videos. I am from the Caribbean and worked on a cruise ship in 89. Can you work on a cruise ship and maintain your rank?
Thanks Robin
Yes I can
New term Ship Piston😍😍Nice to see the engine tour again ❤️❤️When you are coming back to India??
Thank you Shivani
Hopefully next month
The piston you took out of the engine?????? Do you clean it and fit new rings or does it get removed from the ship? A new piston, how do you get it onboard and into the engine room and at the same time remove old ones? Special hatches and cranes etc? BTW love the videos.
Yes we have special hatches and cranes .
Indeed the rings will be replaced by new one
Awesome 👍😎
