  • Part 1 of a 3 part compilation of Siskel & Ebert reviews, arranged in chronological order, from 1978 to 1989.
    I’ve always appreciated how much Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel respected animation. Even if you disagreed with one of them, there was no denying that both of them had a high regard for animated films, holding each film to the same standard as their live action counterparts, and never ignoring the appeal they have to people of all ages.

    “I don’t think people even think about who the voices are.”
    “I don’t want to know who the voices are.”
    Omg. I wish modern audiences understood this escape through animation. Celebrities are NOT the draw.

      I think the Robin Williams Aladdin fiasco changed that part of the business forever. Even as early as The Fox And The Hound, they list voice actors in the movie’s opening credits.

    feels like Siskel had a soft spot for animated films. maybe because he had kids?

    • @spazzyshortgirl23
      @spazzyshortgirl23 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      So does Ebert really. Siskel is a true critic who thinks of kids, Ebert is a film lover who is a kid at heart. They both give animation the true respect it deserves. I also love how they actually consider the fear factor in kids films.

  • @alcarbo8613

    Siskel and Ebert stressing that Sleeping the Beauty is in fact NOT a classic, nowhere close to the same league as Snow White or even Dumbo, cheaply made (BTW it wasn't, the movie was so expensive it almost bankrupted Disney, and the animation quality is better not worse then past productions) and just overall pretty mediocre, with Siskel even giving it a straight up thumbs down, is so bizarre to hear from a modern perspective, WTF were people smoking in 1979?

    • @vivir339
      @vivir339  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, I also disagree with their take on Sleeping Beauty. It’s honestly one of my favorite of Disney’s fairy tale movies. I guess it’s important to remember that this movie wasn’t always considered a classic (it wasn’t even that well received when it first came out), and that neither Gene or Roger were experts on animation. That “cheap” animation Gene was referring to was probably the flat looking backgrounds, which was more of a stylistic choice for the movie, and admittedly must’ve turned a few ppl away. Of course, now we can all see these films in our giant TVs at home and appreciate things about them that audiences in 1979 probably wouldn’t have noticed before.

    They thought The Chipmunk Adventure had "cheap animation"? What? Lmao. The animation looked a thousand times better than any animated TV show adaptation at that time in my opinion, and it looked incredibly impressive considering how Disney was doing at the time, and this was a non-Disney movie.
