Not very commercial stuff in the age of over-hyped pop music, but there is no substitute for talent.
This is just so damn good, and I am very thankful for it. Beautiful music, played with feeling and style.

my path here was via the amazing guitarist Richard Smith but WOW this Brazilian jazz band with him is so cool - Jazz violinist Florian Cristea (I love it) Bina Coquet on gypsy jazz guitar and the bass player - Nando - keeping the rhythm thumping, and gypsy rhythm & mixed-by, Fernando Seifarth. I wish they were all playing down the block tomorrow night in Santa Cruz at the Kuumba Jazz Center!!

We are probably close to the same generation. I recall my dad playing guitar & singing after dinner during that period. Sometimes a few friends would visit with their guitars, mandolins. Before TV there was a lot of that type of socializing. People have always needed that but right after WWII they needed it more.

Richard is so technically amazing, as a guitarist, his right hand work is just flawless! Makes it look easy.... but if you've ever tried it, it's not!!! Bravo, Richard! Saw him at a house concert earlier this year, the man is one of the finest fingerstyle players I've ever, ever seen! Just mind-blowing ability!

Sorry, but I disagree with your opinion. I think he is very good guitarist but the guy on his right (left, as you look at the screen)-I believe his name is Bina Coquet is a category better....His fingers are faster and his plucking is right on time, where Rich has few near misses and he is late. Rich might be famous, but Bina is unmistakably better.....I just have to add, that in any case, it is a beautiful show and guitar playing, no mistake about it! I love it! Didn't want to make negative impression...

Chet Atkins' unique style was very much influenced by Django Reinhardt. Aside from Merle Travis, Chet named Django as his main influence, and said Django Reinhardt was the most influential guitarist who ever lived. In his early years before he was a star, Chet Atkins had trouble keeping jobs at country radio stations. They said his music sounded like gypsy jazz, not American country.

Among the living: England/Scotland's Martin Taylor; Australia's Tommy Emmanuel. Both recorded with their hero Chet Atkins. And Doyle Dykes -- the lone guitarist asked to play at Chet's memorial service at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium. Asked late in life if there was someone he would pay money to see, Chet replied, "Oh, someone like Doyle Dykes." But I agree with you, one Mark to another, Mr. Slater. Mr. Smith is right up there with them -- and a joy to watch. Oh and if you haven't seen Walter Rodrigues Jr (his TH-cam videos have been viewed by millions) you are in for a treat. In his own way, this Brazilian born American is the best of them all -- with arrangements Chet would have loved. You will too, I promise -- or double your money back. -- Mark B of Winnipeg Canada -- home of Lenny Breau. Chet told me in a 1971 interview that Lenny is "the greatest guitarist in the world."

p.s. I helped arrange Doyle Dykes' first visit to Winnipeg Canada, two Octobers ago. He was scheduled to play 90 minutes at our store Quest that carries his signature model acoustic-electric guitars by Godin of Quebec (now the world's largest exporter of quality guitars). He played for three hours. He must have made a mistake, but I didn't hear it.
Before his performance for about 50 (guitarists) including my son and grandson, I spoke with him and said, "Your Dad and mine died the same year; bet your father like mine, loved 'The Poor People of Paris'." (circa 1958). At the end of the show, when he inscribed my Godin-made La Patrie classical instrument, I offered him my Gibson (Northern) Southern Jumbo, hand made by Gibson's other greatest luthier Ren Ferguson. "He made my Guild signature model," said Mr. Dykes, and then, with a smile, looking me in the eye, he played the first few bars of THE POOR PEOPLE OF PARIS. Talk about 'straight to the heart' and, incidentally -- Boy did my Gibson Girl sound good in Doyle's hands!

"Strings!" Love all things strings. Absolutely nothing against the sax, trumpet (I like them) and all the rest, but nothing like stringed instruments to give you the feel good warm and fuzzies. I know, I know it's all subjective. Regardless of the instruments, "live" music is the best! It's raw and real.
