Thanks for saying so, really appreciate it! The number of people stumbling upon my videos is growing more and more each month but, if you wanna help spread the word, please do!
This video, this channel is the epitome of slick and concise analyse. Your videos are brilliant. Your preciseness when scrutinising The Poetics has been extremely helpful for my study, and I thank you for it! Keep doing what you are doing, and I hope your channel gets more recognition as it should be a necessity for a Literature student.
First video of yours that I have watched. You speak well and know your subject. I like the way you repeat the main points as all good communicators do. The visuals helped also. Was just the right length.
Even if there is an emotional venting I feel this is a secondary effect. More so is a point of admiration for the flawed character who struggles and grows through virtue. All this can reflect humanity, the nature of our experiences, the world, and some measure of success even if it is an intangible virtue.
Got 10 pages into poetics and thought I should come get a more basic understanding before I get deep into it. And holy shit is this title accurate as hell.
It's a very well done video with vivid explanation about Aristotle. I love how you explain the cause and effect on why and how catharsis was introduced by Aristotle. Even myself as a second language speaker understands it clearly. Please keep up with your effort. Cheers
Don't you think Socrates' argument for censoring Homer (ART) is highly ironic since he can hardly refrain from reciting its most beautiful passages? I do not think Plato honestly wanted to demolish the arts. He's playing with us! Great lecture, Tom & thank you!
So enjoy your video,s Tom, you are able to explain into layman's terms complex philosophical theory .... fun to listen to and easily understood... Thank you, you are a treasure! x
Thank you, hope you found it interesting! What I do like about Aristotle is that his work tends to be very readable. Perhaps it’s because, being so early on, there isn’t a bunch of other philosophers or specialist terms that he uses or maybe I’ve just been lucky with the translations I’ve read!
Eagle-eyed viewers will notice that that’s not my name at the beginning of this video but just a bunch of gobbledygook. Final Cut clearly hates me this week...
it sounds a bit wrong that you call the moment of "exile of Oedipus" a catharsis. Aristotle's analysis was about how to bring up catharsis in AUDIENCE, not in play. Therefore when he gives "steps you must follow to reach catharsis" means "steps you must follow to excite public". Catharsis is not a step but a result, meaning you can wrap up your play, not that wrapping up brings these emotions. I don't think that moment of exile would excite anybody. Its just an ending.
Hi, by any chance do you have a video contrasting or making reference to Ovid's Metaphorses? or the Poetics related to Shakespeare's Literature? Thanks in advance.
I'm just now digging into the connections between French drama and modern screenwriting. Were there any big differences between the French neoclassical dramas and Eugene Scribe's "well-made play" formula?
I had to contend with Aristotle to a minor extent in college when I was studying English and Literature . While I'm fine with Aristotle's arguments that storytelling and specifically theater have an important role within a society, I never agreed with the insistence on the dominance of Plot over everything else in the story. I don't think Plot should have unthinking and hegemonic dominance within and regarding a narrative and story. I certainly don't see character as less than or subservient to plot. Shakespeare's a good example of characters counting more than plot.
Heya, to be honest it’s not something I know lots and lots about so I’m probably not the person to make that video. Maybe in the future at some point though.
Oh my god! I almost shit myself, thinking "Whoa! Ramsey Bolton, wait... what??" . Alright, I guess it's not gonna end up in a bad way if you are being thought by Ramsey Bolton! *Confused Chuckles*

I am offended at the fact that you don't get more views, your videos are great.

hey, i was wondering if there were any sources for what tom said at ~ 5:25? particularly about not acting out on tragic emotions?
Thanks from Morocco!
No problems!
Thank you from Mexico! How about a video about that text on sanscrit theatre you mentioned?
Heya, to be honest it’s not something I know lots and lots about so I’m probably not the person to make that video. Maybe in the future at some point though.

Do you have a transcript for this video?
Wow Ramsay Bolton sure knows his stuff! 😂 amazing lesson thank you.
Well said.
Thanks Aranyak!
You shall be famous as a teacher.
Aristotle's school was called Lyceum right? 01:32 you mentioned Academy which is the name of Plato's school.. 🤔
Brilliant
Hard to overstate, not “understate”. 😳
What is the meaning of "praxis" in Aristotle's Poetics?
You remind me of Sergei Bondarchuk!
Just sitting here, wondering what Aristotle would think of My Big Fat Greek Wedding (I think he would love it)
Attendence here B.A English students
