Confession...I basically only carry folding knifes to review them...since 1999 I have always preferred using a multitool with a 1 handed blade for basically everything.
I had a bad scissor experience the other day, with a shirt tag. But after that I used a freshly sharpened Kapara, removed said shirt tag. It was a satisfying moment.
I appreciate not just your honesty with us, but with yourself. As a very impoverished knife enthusiast who can only look in through the window of the internet, it’s always hilarious to me to see people feel like anything less than a titanium frame lock with 3V steel won’t be able to safely or effectively cut tape. The first knife I bought for myself since becoming a knife enthusiast was a Spyderco Dragonfly 2 in VG-10, and for a LONG time it was the only knife I carried. I eventually got a Case Barlow in Tru-Sharp. I put both knives through their paces, including shredding up a 100-square-foot vinyl tent so I could haul it to a dumpster. VG-10 with a plastic handle, and fancy-named 420 with no lock. People have been radicalized by social media into thinking that anything less than a luxury art piece is unusable, and it simply isn’t true at all.
Brother, this is a very important realization. I appreciate you saying it like it is. A SAK or Opinel does so much of my day-to-day, even though I have knives I cherish more.
I thought my Spyderco Dragonfly 2 K390 was a bit embarrassing as my #1, given the other larger and sexier knives I own, but you and your wee Gerber have made me feel much better about myself. You make the world a better place, Pete!
The Dragonfly 2 K390 wharncliffe is my most carried knife. The others either have their uses, including just admiring them, but the one that lives in a tray on my desk and doesn't take up much pocket is the one I'll have on me.
After 12 years collecting, and by my spreadsheet, some $2000 invested in edged tools, the one that gets the most use is the Victorinox Waiter I bought used for $14, which I keep the center console of the car. It's the one that's ready to cut open snacks and slice cheese when I'm famished on the drive home. Sometimes, the corkscrew is used as intended too.
This video rings SSOOOOOOO damn true! Like many here, I have MANY knives but at the end of the day, there are only a few that I actually use on the regular. Thank you for making ME rethink new knife purchases!!!!!!
Pro tip: sharpen the package opener to razor sharpness and make it easier to get out. You will use it all the time. I use it almost everyday, it works amazingly well, and i haven't had to resharpen it yet (and it's been awhile). It's too bad the dime is made so poorly, because it's a very good design.
Years ago, while in the Navy, my edc Leatherman Micra worked its way out of my pocket and into Sydney harbor. Almost 15 years later, I still miss my baby leatherman.. My bad New South Wales, for my unintentional littering. Friend, you got me in the feels with this video!
Similar thing for me really. A cheap, no brand, unknown steel slipjoint has put in 8 years of loyal service on my keyring. It's not even knife shaped anymore 🙈
Recently started a routine of putting five or six knives into a rotation on a weekly basis. At the end of the week I will realize that at least a few of them did not make me interested enough to carry and I put them aside to sell. The collections really can get out of hand but when you're only using your eyes to judge they all look so nice. It is easier to admit when you get deliberate about it.
Most used blade: Leatherman Wave w/S30V blade. Car knife: Fallkniven pxlwh. Least used, but carried: Moki...(suit/vest knife) And lets not forget the oft-maligned retractable utility knife ....😂 in many trucks & tool boxes....
My preference is for an old Irwin folding utility knife. With the built-in blade storage, I can go from a straight cut blade to a serrated edge to a hooked blade and even a ceramic blade. Options abound and sharpness is just a blade change away.
I've sort of done the same thing with Leatherman's, I have all the cool ones and I've transitioned backwards to a 90's PSK I paid $30 for at a pawnshop. It's so much lighter than most of the newer ones and the tools are really precisely ground.
My most used knife is a Ganzo FH41S, orange G10 scales, D2 steel. $23.95 USD on Amazon. It’s always in my right front pocket. In my left front pocket is a Victorinox Explorer SAK attached to an UltraTac deep carry pocket clip. Most used tool on the Explorer is the scissors. I have tool bags with pliers, socket sets, adjustable wrenches, scissors, beater knives etc. in each of our vehicles and a fairly extensive tool caddy in the house. I’ve never warmed up to multitools, aside from the SAK, preferring special purpose tools with more ergonomic handles.
I love the fact that you are honest, no BS and the videos are entertaining, I have a health knife collection and I'm also a maker but my Spyderco PM 3 sees the most action, I say action what I mean is it opens parcels, cuts fruit and bubble wrap. Keep it up mate, I'm struggling to keep motivated with the channel.
I ran into the same kind of realization so I swapped out my truck knife ( a small, crap blade on a small, crap Ozark Trail multitool ) for a spare Spyderco Waterway I had. So much more pleasurable but now I look like a dangerous lunatic opening mail in my truck.
Too funny. That looks like a pretty typical load out for most people. When I lived in California mine was very similar right down to the little car knife. Moved to a more knife friendly state almost 20 years ago where half the guys have a fixie (and a pew pew) on their belt. Since then the Esee Izula 2 was the daily carry until I upgraded to a Creely Mako that's been in my right pocket for the last two years, still have the Izula 2 in my left pocket as a backup for the dirty jobs. Earlier today I finally received a Tkell Bushman that I plan to use as my daily beater to replace the Izula, very sturdy blade. Even though those blades are on me anytime I'm outside the house by far my most used blades are a Henckels 4" paring knife and a 8" butchers knife. But for non food related things, the Mako rules. I have so many multitools scattered around my cars and property that I usually don't have one on me, rarely have to go more than 3 steps to reach one.
Sometimes convenience and laziness takes over-the other day I used the butter knife dull and gummed up utility blade on my lever gear xt instead of 1) the para3 in the next room and, even worse, 2) the box of 100 fresh utility blade replacements in the drawer slightly to the right of me
I recently found my old Gerber Dime and carried it for a week (I carry a different knife every week). The Dime in still completely insignificant but completely useful. It’s not even bad at cutting down cardboard but it won’t win any prizes. Sometimes the knife you have with you is all you need.❤ Long live the Dime and all the other “less than top 5” in my collection.😊
Yep. I use the small blade on my SAK as my package opener and beater blade. Today I also used it to chisel a hole in a door frame for a deadbolt. The expensive blade in my other pocket stays mostly pristine.
You are the realest knife YTer. I have an old Leatherman Squirt PS4 that I feel like I've had for 10 plus years with a little 420HC blade that ends up cutting 90% of whatever I run into by virtue of being on my keys. It's literally always in my pocket when I'm out. I also end up using it to avoid tape residue or dulling/damaging the edge on the expensive knife I'm carrying for apparently no actual reason...
Yeah. It's the spyderco ladybug that lives in our kitchen miscellaneous drawer for the same reason. My wife and I both use it for package and mail opening. VG10 ain't glamorous but it gets the job done. God, it's probably due for a tape de-gunking and sharpening.
VG10 may not be glamorous compared to modern super steels, but it’s still a very good steel Shoot, it’s better then 14C28N and D2, which are the most popular knife steels at the moment
No way! I preserve my multitool blade and use separate beater whenever I can because the multitool blade is attached to the tools (you may have noticed) so I don't want to ruin the whole tool by ruining the blade. Emergency use only.
I use my Leatherman wave plus to many tasks and a Kizlyar D2 bladed folding knife also. I dont have such tiny multitool but I dare to say its pretty nice and has helped you throu many tasks. I think you should be happy that it has served you so well.
i have a Gerber multi tool 400, the same one for 26 years now. love it, gets used everyday on my farm, had it in all those years sent in 2 times, once for a broken plier head, and once a new knife. all which cost me nothing excellent warranty by Gerber. and still going strong, by my side 26 years, how is that for a test!! ps. i live in one of the wettest country probably on the planet, Netherlands never had a rust problem of any kind.
You forgot to pick up the video speed for the cutting test. 😂 Bought a dime a few years back, returned the dime a few days after that. Nowadays it's a Victorinox pioneer with alox scales doing most of the pocket duty. Its a sentimental thing, but I do quite like it.
Love the Leatherman Curl! The loss of the saw, serrated knife and locking internal tools seems terrible on paper but that slim size and included clip is so much more pocket friendly. I never have to bother with the belt sheath. Nice thing about that beaten up Gerber is it's safe to have easily seen in the car without worrying someone's gonna break in to steal it!
Interesting video...reminds me of all my forgotten knives I have scattered everywhere that I wouldn’t even think of as part of my collection. Yet most are used often.
I similarly kept track of what I used over a month to see what I could actually justify carrying as an edc. Turns out I don't need a multitool on hand and I barely "need" a knife.
If you need something that’s actually useful to edc but it’s light and doesn’t take up space try a bandana. I always have one folded up in my back pocket and I don’t even feel it. They’re so cheap they’re semi-disposable. It’s nice to have something other than your clothes to wipe stuff up with.
I carry a zdp189 endura i got because you at home, i carry the pacific salt 2 (which is basically a linerless lc200n endura) at work as a chef, and every once in a while i swap in an s45vn pm2 for work. I have a lot of other knives but these see the most pocket time for sure
My most used knives / tool is my lynch nw pry bar at number 1, gerber key note and at a far third is my Benchmade proper. The honorable mention is my schrade slipjoint i keep in my car. What do all of these have in common? They are small, i can pull them put in public and people dont freak out. All of my cooler knives get flipped more than they cut anything.
I have a drawer full of expensive knives, yet I mostly grab my Mora HD more often than everything else COMBINED. I used to carry expensive EDC knives, but after losing a knife or 2 and having a friend ‘borrow’ my knife (only to return it needing to be reprofiled), I now carry a cheap Kubey folder as my EDC. If I lose it or break it, i can replace it for a reasonable price and it’s literally ALWAYS with me when I’m wearing pants. No more $200 dollar EDC knives for me bro. Seeing a friend/ business partner trying to use my WE knife as a screwdriver was the final straw.
for me it's definitely become the powerpint. i put a thumb tab on it which makes the blade considerably harder to use and sharpen but it's always there when I need it. tool wise it actually has a lot of similarities to the leatherman arc but it disappears in my pocket when i don't need so much tool. which is most of the time
After years of collecting knives and chasing the latest/greatest sprint runs, I found my sweet spot dragonfly/leaf jumper combo in k390 is all I use now. My first knife is a pm2 from 2014 i broke the tip off my first day owning sits in my car. Everything else collects dust.
I have a similar situation, the 5 knives that I use the most are cheap knives with simple steel and excellent design number 1 convincing first place Ganzo 727 2. dl 30 multitool 3. minipuko 85 from Varusteleka 4.opinel no.9 5. a knife that I made
So... 1. Car knife - Leatherman Juice 2. kitchen knife - Warther 5" Sandwich knife 3. Multitool - Swiss Army Pioneer 4. Favorite - Benchmade Mini Adamas 5. Back pocket beater - Cold Steel Code 4 I don't feel terrible, slightly embarrassed (that I took own "better" but less used knives).
I cut miles of plastic sheeting while masking cars in the paint booth. I tend to use one of my spydercos until until it dulls to the point of becoming annoying. This kind of forces me to rotate through the stable and prevents any one from feeling left out. It also justifies me in carrying a backup.
Yep. My most used knives are the little blade on my boring AF Swiss army knife and my Mora companion for anything bigger around the property. So many other choices, but they doo all the work.
My most used knife by far is an Ikea vegetable knife because, well, that's what I use to chop my veggies. Most other cutting tasks just don't take particularly long, so they can't compare. At least my #2 is a Spyderco UKPK in S110V.
As a farm person and general outdoors person, my Spyderco Endura is my workhorse for everything. Knives are great, and the adage that you use the knife you have is certainly true for a reason!
Haha, cool to see the leatherman curl on there. I bought it as my first leatherman after watching your review. A lot of people in the review world were bashing it for being a "worse" wave+. But in Australia (as you know), there's actually a huge price difference between the wave and the curl. Also, I live quite an urban life, so the tools on the curl would (and have) sufficed. Also, it's lighter and comes with the pocket clip, and thinner. But your review painted a more balanced picture, and you rated it relative to what it was. Anyways, year and a half later and I've carried it with me every single day and it's gotten some good use. Cheers for the video, you've got me interested in the Spyderco Stretch now.
Deka (clip point magnacut, OG XL skinny goat scales), native 5 in SPY27 with AWT scales, and Manix 2 LW in BD1N. One of those three has been in my pocket every day for the last 6 months. The Deka kicked a 940 out of my rotation when I got the OG scales. I used to have a much bigger collection including some stupidly priced folders. But I sold off and gave away a bunch over the years. Everything got used, some borderline abused. But the ones I rarely used I made sure ended up with people who will use and enjoy them. Now I just have about 12-14 modern folders that I hang on to. Still have a knife roll of various vintage slipjoints I picked up, was given, and inherited over the years. But I only carry a Sodbuster and a large Stockman out of that roll. The rest all have sentimental value.
I have a knife collection but my Victorinox Farmer X scissors probably do the most cutting. I've gotten to where the Farmer X and Leatherman Skeletool are the two knives I rotate between the most.
I have a Kiwi that is a real kitchen go-to for dicing!! I also use it for chopping lettuce quite often. I tend to use it to slice up leftover steak to use in omelettes, too. Cheap and a pleasure to use.
Ooh, almost a match on an unexpected knife. #6 for me is Kiwi brand Thai Chef's Knife, with a bent tip. 1. Kobalt folding hawk bill knife - for packages, especially the clear plastic ones. 2. Fiskars folding utility knife with their fancy carbon X or whatever blade 3. ALDI ceramic paring knife. 4..probably one of the Swiss Army knives. minichamp? ... boatman? 5. Swiss Army multi-tool
Everyone is obsessed with “hard use” knives, even I fell into that trap. Now small fixed blades are all the rage because the TH-cam algorithms say “it’s needed for hard use.” What are people doing? My Delica or Salt 2 is more than enough. If you want something hard use get a Mora companion. Best $18
I love that you sharpened and edge testet the Dime's blade at the end 😂 But honestly, I really like my dime. The pliers are quite useful for small tasks. Grantet, my pliers close very very well togehter at the end. So well that I can literally use them as tweezers
I’ll do a “me too”. Not really for a car knife (although I do have one). But since I can carry a regular knife most of the time when I thought about it I realized I mostly use…a Swiss Army knife. The dedicated folding knife is probably the thing I use the least. A SAK or Leatherman probably handles 90% of what most people need. Likely why knife purchases tend to be more on the pocket jewelry side.
Go the Dime. Ive had one on my keys for years. I almost never use it, its basically a little brick that clangs around when im driving but i cant bring myself to take it off. It is a good little design and the tweezers are cool. The daily users are a leatherman sidekick and a home made 4 inch bush knife 🔪
l carry the Gerber Dime at work. The blister pac cutting tool is perfect for extracting stuck cases that get stuck in the guns chamber! l work at a range
FINALLY, I'm better about something! I actually use my pocket knife more. Which one depends on the week/month. When one gets dull, usually after 1-2 hours of rendering cardboard for the bin, I'll switch to another. Most recently I traded one Bugout for a different Bugout as my primary for that very reason. I also routinely have 4 knives on me. One primary (usually a "good" or nice aka expensive one), a cheap beater, lately an Endela, a Victorinox money clip for cash and a Victorinox on my keychain. So haha. Oh, and yeah, I used scissors yesterday because my gym shorts had no pockets and I had to open a box. So there's that.
Started carrying a different one each day, truck knife is a OTF that rarely gets used and an old Boy Scout knife ( most amazing bottle opener on that one) most carried and used over last few years was a Maxamet Para 2
Wait until if you become a knife maker and you hoard stuff: bits of rare timber that I like but don't trust myself to use on anything good, steels that just don't get used in production knives for various reasons, artisinal stuff no longer made. Or the results of just putting in an order thinking, you know I might get some more 1/8 and 1/16th rods for pin stock just in case... then do that for 10 years until you realise the childrens children will have pin stock
@@Arcturious-No_More Thanks mate, I've gotten better about timber hoarding and still use a lot of it. But I keep telling myself the really premium bits are there as an 'example'... you know, just in case someone wanted it on a handle one day. Then someone had 40% off on plates of Nitro-v and S35 so that's kind of ruined the metal pile a bit.
1. SOG Power Access Deluxe (little, basic blade). That is all. But seriously, any reasonably competent multitool blade is likely to meet most cutting needs, it just comes down to what you like to carry. Great video, thanks.
Guardian tactical, so so smooth opening and closing for us old coots, and after hopefully class fully adding skateboarding tape on certain areas, help a lot with grip/purchase, it is used 24/7, even with the dagger very, very sharp blade. Highly recommended. Kind of like using scissors all the time in house but now with a great very, very sharp knife.
My top 3 in reality is a 1. gerber prybrid (basically a utility knife) with a carbide tipped blade. I got a second one living in the car too. 2. manley peak. The cheapest bestest lightest thinnest lockback with a S90V blade. 2. the Spyderco swayback - luv that blade. And I got dozens of higher quality knives in my collection just collecting dust in the glass cupboard.
hahaha i literally was just thinking about this earlier in the day. i have all these knives and for the most part i rarely use them. i have an embarrassing amount of knives that cost a lot of money and for the most part i choose to bring a swill army knife alox with me 90% of the time just cause its small and pretty much weighs nothing. i more just grab a sebenza or a shiro to fidget around with while i am driving.
Thank you, thank you very much for sharpening the multitool blade, my OCD was starting to kick in. And please use the box opener to open boxes. Or at least lie that you will, please.
My honest top five currently would be: 5. Benchmade Anonimus, mostly for carpentry. 4. Spyderco PM2, as my car console letter opener. 3. Leatherman Arc, random EDC cuts. 2. ESEE Candiru neck knife, slightly more EDC cuts. 1. Wusthof paring knife, kitchen use. I really like the ESEE for most non-kitchen things, because it feels fine not worrying about the knife getting worn or abused. In a moment of laziness of not wanting to go get the right tool for the job, i battoned that Candiru with a hammer to make kindling. ...I am not proud of my actions, but i am proud of my little Candiru.
Ain't no shame in the Gerber Dime. My EDC is one of them and a knife. The DIme is the knife I use when I don't want to freak anyone out with a real knife. Makes for decent tweezers too.
man, i hate the Dime. i kept in in my desk at work when i had one and i still didn't really like it there. i can basically carry anywhere where i live though, and it's the Lander that basically gets most of the use that way.
I’ve been stuck using the spyderco native 5 and recently got a Magnacut version and put some awt scales on it. It’s all I want to use and carry anymore. The native 5 is probably my favorite knife out of my collection.
I use a coldsteel broken skull and watchman we222. I always have a voyager xl on me but they are for nasty use. Let's hope that i never have to use them. My multi tool is a bibury 19-1 i love it.
Confession...I basically only carry folding knifes to review them...since 1999 I have always preferred using a multitool with a 1 handed blade for basically everything.
;)
i love how he's fully aware of the edc social media cringe and making fun of it
I feel like to most normal people, the first top 5 list is a lot more embarrassing than the second.
Don't feel bad, the other day I used scissors. SCISSORS! 😓🤦
😂😂😂
I had a bad scissor experience the other day, with a shirt tag.
But after that I used a freshly sharpened Kapara, removed said shirt tag.
It was a satisfying moment.
Eeww.. How could you?
Blasphemy!!
Sir, we’re gonna politely have to ask you to leave.

Would you enjoy a custom style sak? Or a tool steel reblade?
I was thinking about getting some s125 for reblades like that
@@lindboknifeandtool honestly, the standard steel Victorinox uses is perfect for what it is. It’s very user friendly.
Did we just witness the bravest man on the internet?

Gave my ZDP-189 dragonfly to my (now ex) girlfriend about 5 year ago and I still regret it. So utilitarian and surprisingly sturdy

love it, gets used everyday on my farm, had it in all those years sent in 2 times, once for a broken plier head, and once a new knife.
all which cost me nothing excellent warranty by Gerber. and still going strong, by my side 26 years, how is that for a test!!
ps. i live in one of the wettest country probably on the planet, Netherlands never had a rust problem of any kind.
You forgot to pick up the video speed for the cutting test. 😂
Bought a dime a few years back, returned the dime a few days after that.
Nowadays it's a Victorinox pioneer with alox scales doing most of the pocket duty. Its a sentimental thing, but I do quite like it.
My gerber dime used to live in my tackle box, but the scissors are so useless, I moved it to my mailbox keyring. It is now one of my most used tools.
Sometimes, what we like and what we use can be really different.
The Battle Horse Knives' Slug is my most used knife. It's a fixed-blade. It's in my front posket every day.
Advanced Knife Bro cracks me up. Wicked funny and good reviews too. That Stumplifter looks like a great slipjoint.
I have a similar situation, the 5 knives that I use the most are cheap knives with simple steel and excellent design
number 1 convincing first place Ganzo 727
2. dl 30 multitool
3. minipuko 85 from Varusteleka
4.opinel no.9
5. a knife that I made
So...
1. Car knife - Leatherman Juice
2. kitchen knife - Warther 5" Sandwich knife
3. Multitool - Swiss Army Pioneer
4. Favorite - Benchmade Mini Adamas
5. Back pocket beater - Cold Steel Code 4
I don't feel terrible, slightly embarrassed (that I took own "better" but less used knives).
I cut miles of plastic sheeting while masking cars in the paint booth. I tend to use one of my spydercos until until it dulls to the point of becoming annoying. This kind of forces me to rotate through the stable and prevents any one from feeling left out. It also justifies me in carrying a backup.
Good honest video. I also have a Gerber Dime in my car but I only use it when I don't have anything else with me. As a backup.
Hell yeah brother! It's all about how you use it. Looks like you use it well and nice sharpening job
LOL, I just realized today that the most useful knife I have is the keychain SAK 😂
1. Kiwi brand Thai Chef's Knife
2. Otter-Messer Mercator Large Brass
3. RAT II S35VN
4. ACE Jutland
5. Spyderco Para 2
2. Fiskars folding utility knife with their fancy carbon X or whatever blade
3. ALDI ceramic paring knife.
4..probably one of the Swiss Army knives. minichamp? ... boatman?
5. Swiss Army multi-tool
The last minute or so was full of knife nerd romance. I was nearly in tears.
SAK classic SD does most cuts for me, and mainly the tiny scissors
Civiv Voltaic for normal use, Stumplifter for special occasions, dang ol' Gerber Sharkbelly as my beloved old lightweight beater. I'm a brokeboy!
My car blade used to be a broken 2 ft clip point blade wrapped with some canvas and Paracord at the broken base.
l carry the Gerber Dime at work.
Yet another brilliant knife (and life) insight Pete! It’s like watching Master Uguay of the online knife world! 😂
Keep on keeping it real!
May you find that bit of inspiration (and time) you need to break into the good stuff and enjoy your hoard.
I finally got rid of most of my material horde, but I still have a 2x6" piece of MPL-1 that I don't trust myself to do anything with.
I've never cleaned out my shed just in case the dirt comes in handy one day...
Don't feel bad, I have the same multitool, and I used it to help replumb my bathroom.
hahaha i literally was just thinking about this earlier in the day. i have all these knives and for the most part i rarely use them. i have an embarrassing amount of knives that cost a lot of money and for the most part i choose to bring a swill army knife alox with me 90% of the time just cause its small and pretty much weighs nothing. i more just grab a sebenza or a shiro to fidget around with while i am driving.
For a second I was worried you were going to unearth a car Case knife!
Thank you, thank you very much for sharpening the multitool blade, my OCD was starting to kick in.
And please use the box opener to open boxes. Or at least lie that you will, please.
My honest top five currently would be:
Makes for decent tweezers too.
thanks for keeping it real... and including Simple Jack lolol
Yes , the knife that is in reach. Love your work mate .
Probably my most versitile knife is my leatherman signal with bitkit. Can fix and adjust anything on my expensive rifle. Plus cut shit 🇦🇺 🇳🇿
man, i hate the Dime. i kept in in my desk at work when i had one and i still didn't really like it there. i can basically carry anywhere where i live though, and it's the Lander that basically gets most of the use that way.
Please do a Gerber Dime vs 3l water bottles stacked 5 deep. And then maybe a Lyn T style Gerber Dime v vertical pig carcass perhaps?
I’ve been stuck using the spyderco native 5 and recently got a Magnacut version and put some awt scales on it. It’s all I want to use and carry anymore. The native 5 is probably my favorite knife out of my collection.
Yeah the little vnox SD on my Keychain gets used as much as any other knife I have for the same reason as the dime. It's handy in the car
"Cut my targets..."
LOL
Love it
I thought for sure the Dime was going to cut the paper once and then the whole garage would blow up.
Love the Basil outro❤😂
I use a coldsteel broken skull and watchman we222.
I always have a voyager xl on me but they are for nasty use. Let's hope that i never have to use them.
My multi tool is a bibury 19-1 i love it.
I keep a leatherman Rebar in the car. Its robust enough to do stuff like tighten or loosen battery terminal nuts
Underrated Maynard outro scream!
