This video is very eerie given the current circumstances
Thing is, Tarawera isn't really a true volcano. The entire basin is part of the Okataina Caldera, and what happened in 1886 was a great 15km long volcanic rift was ripped open across Tarawera and the nearby lake.

Mt Tarawera is a lava dome. It's a giant mass of sticky lava that's slowly oozed out of one of Okataina's vents over thousands of years.
Okataina is a caldera - a volcano where there's been a massive eruption that has emptied the initial magma chamber and collapsed in on itself. Over the millennia more vents have opened up in the old crater that have filled it in with lava domes, lava flows, tephra, pumice and other volcanic material to form the landscape you see in this video. Mt Tarawera isn't the volcano - the whole *landscape* is the volcano, hidden beneath the forests, mountains and lakes.

they can be useful, volcanoes can either show signs of a upcoming eruption like white island and ruapehu where theyre normally on alert level 1 or 2 and then erupt or be on alert level 0 which is no signs or volcanic unrest and erupt. Although monitoring for volcanoes is still improving to this day and will only get better in the future.
It's not these volcano you have to worry about it's the Yellowstone super volcano that would literally cover the world in Ash. Look it up.

Whakaari has been erupting on and off in the 70 odd years of my life, looked at the island when one woke in the morning could see it wherever you were, so yeah nothing new.
