You can, it's actually why you roll 4v1, and why 3v1 is suboptimal, because you can lose those 2 attacking troops to the one defender

Purple really needed to go for that kill. Blue saw it. Whoever got pink 5 cards was going to be the front runner to win. Blue needed to use that 3 and leave him with a few extra troops for the kill.. small mistakes.

Terrible dice. Losing 1 or 2 on a 3 is expected. Losing 3 is not good but anything more than that is really bad.
