Working on my Recurve Bow Shooting

  • For me, maintaining a high level of accuracy and consistency with my recurve or longbow requires constant work. In this recurve shooting tips video I'm working on my traditional archery shot cycle and giving my thoughts on everything from how to aim a recurve to proper archery form, back tension, common mistakes, etc. One of the things I talk about is why you often see me shooting with a limb mounted clicker.
When I'm working on my shot I shoot one arrow at a time. This forces me to analyze each shot. If I don't execute a shot perfectly it gives me time to reflect on what went wrong instead of just shooting another arrow. Those poorly executed shots give us an opportunity to learn, but only if we pay attention to them.
Every step in my shot cycle has a place there because it works well for me in the type of bow hunting situations I find myself in most often. That's hunting public land from the ground, on rough country and in very close proximity to spooky game like deer and elk. My archery form, posture, etc. may be different than what an Olympic style shooting coach would teach. Again, this is what I've settled on for my style of bowhunting.

As soon as you shot that one shot I seen your elbow jumped forward and thought to myself where he didn’t have proper back tension on that shot, and then you turn around and said exactly what I was thinking! That was confirmation for me that I do know and can analyze my shot process on what’s right and wrong now. Thanks clay.

I shot my Selfbow during lunch yesterday. At first my shooting was awful. I started really focusing on the basics you discuss, especially the back tension. My shooting improved a LOT! My arrow flight was better, and my bow seemed quieter even. It works!

LOVE the tutorial video: there can NEVER be enough "How I Practice" videos, because EVERY single archer can find themselves sharing what might be a simple, tiny "insight" to them, but may be JUST "the thing" another archer has been seeking to help perfect their own shooting.
For those of you who are open to exploring additional tips & techniques to possibly incorporate into your own shooting methods & styles, I humbly offer this:
    COMBINE:
String Walking with FINGER WIDTHS (whole, half, quarter, eighth)
for PRECISE ARROW ELEVATION SETTING from the REAR of the bow
    AND Anchoring UNDER the chin
for DRAMATICALLY increased ARROW RANGE even out to 120 yds
AND sighting down the left string edge as a "rear sight"
    for COMPOUND-like ACCURACY
AND using the ARROW TIP as a "front pin"
    again for COMPOUND-like ACCURACY
... and TOGETHER you have a FORMIDABLE SHOOTING METHOD which eliminates the weaknesses in many popular barebow shooting methods, but which even newbies and experienced archers can learn in 5 minutes...
Here's a video of me using this method to shoot an ordinary hunting recurve bow and common $6 hunting arrows at 100 YDS, and hitting 5 of 6 ON-TARGET even in a cross wind !
IMAGINE how accurate YOU can instantly become at distances from 10m to 50m to 70m and everything in between!
    th-cam.com/video/Cn0gxNeTITQ/w-d-xo.html
Again, changes aren't for everyone, but for archers looking to improve their long-distance range and accuracy, this method might be something you'll find interesting.
KEEP UP THE GREAT VIDEOS !

I think that traditional archery and hunting public lands are both growing right now for similar reasons. 1) The added challenge is rewarding. 2) Great information online like your channel, Jimmy Blackmon, the Push, THP, hunting beast and others. 3) More accessibility to gear that helps (good cheap traditional bows, saddle hunting and better public land gear). This a great time to learn new hunting methods and styles. It's easy to forget how blessed we are to have great help at our finger tips.

Clay, I love the looks of a recurve. There's just something about them that's very appealing. But they're very sensitive to shoot. The great Howard Hill was asked why he didn't shoot the recurve and his response was he couldn't shoot that well. I shoot the longbow primarily. You can make mistakes and get away with it more often than the recurve. Especially if the longbow is straight limbed or slight string follow.

    • @mikeseeley1042
      @mikeseeley1042 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'm a huge Hill fan too, but recently switched to hunting with a recurve. With consistent form, I find the recurve preferable in hunting situations due to its shorter limbs. Howard is still my archery hero though, and I love making and shooting longbows.

Yeah Clay! There are many benefits to shooting one arrow at a time. In particular for western big game. #1 is just pure walking a ton. When I am getting ready to go Elk Hunting, I am going to shoot around 100 arrows a day. Maybe not everyday but, certainly on days off. So, if you figure my average shot distance is 23 yards.....that is 46 yards walked times 100. That added to my daily work outs and cardio is a good boost.
#2 It just makes you a better shot, stops you from range finding with the first arrow.
This time of year my mind always starts thinking mountains and elk.
Unfortunately, my Unit went to a draw and I did not draw a tag. Still, I am working out and about to start ramping up my shooting. Maybe I can find an over-the-counter unit. If not, I will go to Northern New Mexico and hunt squirrels and grouse for 2 weeks. Being Minute Of Grouse is easy....Minute Of Squirrel is a tuffer shot but, those yankees don't eat squirrel so, it is easy to get what us Texicans call skillet shots😂👍

Clay I have been watching you for some time now and I know that you make nothing but ethical shots.common Sense would tell most people who have been doing this for a while that nobody is crazy enough to take very long shots on a live animal with traditional gear. I enjoy your videos and they give off a lot of good information but you know you are always going to have that select few that will disagree with anybody that doesn't do things exactly the way that they think should happen. A lot of people have forgotten that if you are not having fun with what you are doing then you are definitely not doing it right.I take longer shots myself in my backyard just to see how well I can do at longer yardages but when it comes to a ethical shot I know my limits. Great job on all of your videos and I will continue watching as long as you make them. Happy Thanksgiving to your family and may God richly bless you all in everything that you do.

I'm at exactly where you speak of with paying attention to expanding back muscles. Every time it feels perfect, the arrow flies perfect.
Sometimes, like you say, I can do a bad shot and it still hit's where I'm looking. I wasn't happy with that because I knew the shot form wasn't a repeatable form.
There was a neurological study done with a group of Olympic divers on eliciting the strategy of an Olympian. All but one Olympic diver said: what makes an Olympic diver an Olympian is; when we hit the sweet spot on the board, we know we're going to do a perfect dive.
The one Olympic diver that disagreed said: what makes an Olympic diver an Olympian is when we miss the sweet spot and still do a perfect dive!
So... I'm wondering if/how that may well be thinking worth adopting. I'm also wondering [if] that's what's happening when I miss the sweet spot on form and still hit where I'm looking!(????) Maybe I could change my mental perception on that.(???)
Awesome video, brother!! Finding the problem to change the problem is often half my problem lol

BINGO exactly what you said Clay! I shoot this Bow better after taking weight off retillering. The biggest problem IMHO is Folks making the switch to Traditional Archery over bowing themselves. Shooting too close to what their Compound weight was and not being able to practice effectively with that weight. always said a great hunting weight Traditional Bow is one that you can shoot consistently threw 2 rounds of 3-D targets and have no problem shooting third round. Even a few pounds can make a difference.

The only thing that I have done to feel more back tension is when I draw by bow, instead of pulling straight back, I will actually draw out and away from my body then sink it into my anchor point rather than drawing back to my anchor....any thoughts on that?

theres recorded shots past 45 yards with bow hunting for sure.

Shooting three under allows you to get a higher anchor point on your face, getting the shaft closer to your eye. Give it a try, some prefer it. I shoot shorter bows three under to avoid arrow pinch. Gap shooting is only helpful if you can accurately guage distances, if your distance is out your gap will be out. Instinctive is basically already just unconscious gap shooting and muscle memory.

Had the bow set up at a pro shop. It performed just fine th-cam.com/users/postUgkxQEKUoxLWwayEDZR0NKB-5limn4MBU-2L . And I would say this is a good starting now that I could pass down to my son when he is older. But the package was missing the release and a nock was missing from one arrow.Dealing with customer support was terrible. They suggested I buy a new release rather than correct their own quality control issue because it’s to expensive for the. to ship it out from China.Update: manufacturer got back to me and resolved the issue. I retract the above statement.

As far as channel growth. You've got some really great content, you just need to get eyes on the videos for the first time. I think folks will subscribe if they get a chance to see you. I think I said it in another video, but I think collaboration videos and series are a great way to introduce yourself to large numbers of people at once.
You could start resorting to click bait BS also. Just start picking sensationalistic headlines and have some odd capture of your face in the thumbnail like you were halfway through saying something outrageous.........wait, just kidding. Please don't do that!

He seems to have a gift in explaining what should be obvious; but it is like he drops a grenade and leaves the room; like opening a can of worms, but he gives the guidelines to deal with the "revelation".

Never worry about long shots, learn to stalk your animals and get super close shots. That's the key to success and humane kills .Your freezer will stay full.

I once went for a hunt for deer with my compound.
I had to shoot 4 arrows to bring it down, after a chase for at least 3 miles...
When we got to it, it was like it was crying, blood everwhere, and I had to finish it of with my knife.
It was really hartbreaking, it is almost 6 years ago, and I still can’t forget about it.
There is Nothing romantic about bow hunting. really. Its a bloody mess.🐥

I’m sorry that that was your experience bowhunting. That is heartbreaking. An accurate shot with a razor sharp broadhead usually kills within a matter of seconds. That is what all bowhunters ought to strive for. I hope you don’t give up the pursuit of your own meat, it is one of the most intrinsically rewarding experiences.

Its a channel about hunting with a bow some times ive killed deer quicker with a bow than a gun depends on where ya hit them

  • @calimero5216
    @calimero5216 4 ปีที่แล้ว

A bow is not a proper tool to instandly kill an animal.
What if you were a deer, would you prefer a bullet, or an arrow...?
    Stop doing this. Please.🐥

Based on your previous post,i would say that you chose to hunt with your compound, when you were not adequately educated or prepared for that hunt..In that case,i would concur with your opinion but if someone is educated and prepared,i would not..Dont judge others based on your personal short comings.. Plenty of animals are wounded and or lost to those carrying a rifle and the same short comings..

  • @calimero5216
    @calimero5216 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Stop bow hunting, use a rifle.
If you respect your prey, use your bow for sports.
There is no reason for animals to suffer. Get yourself a gun.
    Stop doing this.🐥

Then we’ll get ridiculed for choosing an easy method in which animals aren’t getting a fair chance from someone like you it’s a lose lose for a hunter

How do you think an animal dies in the wild ,either starves from its teeth being ground down or via predation

What if it was a real deer.....you hava a bad shot now and then....

You Keep Missing????..I saw 1 shot that wasnt in the kill zone..Where do you aim for??..Based on your own admission,i would venture to say my assessment of your lack of education is correct,,if in fact,it even happened..I must say,the more you post, the more i doubt you even hunt with any weapon ....
