I learned this in 7th Grade Earth Sciences class. Nature abhors a straight line. I’ve said many times what you’ve said, Josh, to my friends. They always come back with “well the market always comes back.” Oh. Ok. Until it doesn’t and you’re sitting there bagging groceries at age 70 for the other retirees who bought 5% 30Y TBills.

This is a great example of why you have to be watching the market and be ready to pull it out when it drops. I know you stand a chance of missing the swing back up but it takes a lot more to gain than it does to lose.

Go watch DR’s video from 5 years ago stating why you should take SS at 62 and invest it. He gets very tangled beyond the headline.

IMO the way to set up a retirement portfolio is to determine what your total annual expenses are.
    1. 5 X Annual Expenses in Cash/MM/HYSA. (25%)
    2. 5 X Annual Expense in Bond Fund (25%)
    3. The remainder of your investments in a balanced stock fund. (50%)
Once Social Security starts it is then gravy.
How do you know you are mentally/financially set to retire? When you can end any business phone call with F you and hang up without any concern that it will impact you financially.

I FIRE'd in 2019 and my networth along with the crazy run up has risen $420k since leaving while taking dividends, distrabutions and interest to live. My wife is looking to retire this year as well and is 54 but want to use rule 55 as she turns 55 this year to brige until social IRA and social security. As the finacial person of the family sequence of returns risk is heavily on my mind as I get the feeling we will be seeing a major correction this year but who knows. She is sitting on about 80k in cash earning 3.30% at one of the local bank and for now if I could find a 5.25% money market I'd move the money there until if and when a heavy correction occurs.

all stocks until they drop 45% one week after you retired as WS wiseguys decide it's a good time to shake the tree (and forgo the common decency to forewarn you)
p.s. retiring INTO a major crash also means you "overpaid" for the stocks for 10-20 years
