    our conure loves to take sink baths whenever we run the water before washing our hands. he gets so excited and starts fluttering his wings in anticipation before diving in lol. he also gets excited when he hears the shower running, but prefers to not actually shower in the stream, he will just sit on the shower door, or on our heads (soap free that is) before flying away to perch. depending on how quick he is, he can sometimes end up getting wet 1-3 times a day, but we try to keep it to once a day to once every other day because we don't want him to be chilled before his bedtime. morning or afternoon baths are fine. most of the time he is OK with cold water. or room temp to lukewarm tap water. we alternate. we found that he is not very fond of a spray bottle.

    • @ShadeSlayer1911
      @ShadeSlayer1911 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's normal for chickens. Water really chills them, so they can easily freeze to death even in warmer temperatures.

    • @animalwondersmontana
      @animalwondersmontana  7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Efren Chen Some birds take dust baths instead! I didn't mention other kinds of baths because most "companion" birds are tropical or benefit from water baths.

    At the wildlife center I used to work at we would mist the seabirds all the time and spray the hawks with a hose (they were high on an outdoor perch), especially on days when it was very hot in the summer, but also to keep them clean. They loved it!

    Hey Jessi! 1st I wanted to thank you for all the work you put into making these videos and helping to educate people about the wonderful critters on this planet, I can't wait to see your videos every week. 2nd I had a question, soon I will be moving, I have a fun 15 hour drive ahead and I have two lovely red-footed tortoises who will be coming with me. I have a "box" that should retain the heat pretty well and I plan on putting damp moss in there so it shouldn't be too dry, but I want to make sure that I'm not forgetting anything and I want to relieve as much stress as possible. Any suggestions? Thanks again and keep up the great work!

    • @animalwondersmontana
      @animalwondersmontana  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kevin Manley As long as your heating your car at about 70 degrees they will be ok for temperature. I'm worried about the moss because I don't want them to eat it. They don't need a ton of moisture, maybe just line the bottom of the box with several layers of paper towels and mist them every few hours. You can offer a few leaves of lettuce and some papaya, mango, or strawberries to keep them hydrated. They'll most likely poop, so bring a plastic bag to stuff all the soiled paper towels in and bring the roll of paper towels to replace. As far as traveling with animals, red footed torts are fairly complacent company :) Good luck and I hope you have a safe trip!

    I had one budgie who would sit on the edge of her water dish and screech until you dunked your fingers in the water and soaked her. Indifferent to the mister but loved finger baths. The other budgie was obsessed with ice and would 'surf' when we put cubes in her water.

    Another tip that works with some birds: add some lettuce leaves to a big bowl of water. Bathing in the water collected on leaves is natural behavior for some birds, so providing them with that situation/stimulus can be a good way to get them to take a bath.

    I used to give my cockatiel a bath in her cage using a spray bottle, and she was fine with it, she'd puff up and clean herself every time, but now if i use the spray bottle while she's in her cage she runs around the cage trying to avoid it, and if she's out of the cage she'll fly somewhere else, I can't use the shower in my bathroom, because it's sprays a bit hard, and I try pouring a little bit of water on her with a spoon, and she flies away from that too, so I'm starting to think she just doesn't like water, but my aunt (She's the one who gave me the bird) says she prefers to give herself baths, so I need to try that

      Which mister type did you try? My Amazon quit bird bathing when he got a new enclosure, a regular shower freaks him out, and he was wary of the spritzer bottle (and my hand hurt after a few minutes). I picked up the pump sprayer (the option on the left hand side off the screen) rather cheaply at Home Depot (the ones for sale in the pet store were smaller and 10 dollars more), and he loves it. He tells me when he's ready for a shower because he;l start leaning towards the bath tub (usually at the most in opportune time, so he'll usually have to wait a bit.)

      It's funny how different each bird can be. My Kakariki parrot loves to bathe himself in a shallow dish on the floor. He looks like a robin in a bird bath. He will spend 20 mins hopping in & out and almost turn himself upside down until he is soaked. My Cockatiel will not bathe himself. He enjoys the shower. As soon as he hears the shower start, he flies to his shower perch. He sits there while I have my shower (a little voyeur) then when I am done, he likes to be gently held in my hands. I have the water run over his back, while I gently pet him over all his feathers. This is our special bonding time, as he will not let me touch him like this any other time but shower time. They also like different water temperatures. My Kakariki likes a cool bath, while the Cockatiel likes a slightly warm shower. Keep trying different strategies until you find what suits your particular bird. Good luck.

    We have a bath bowl to put in our cage but I don't know why but we've never used it and they're (my birds) aren't used to it either so we give them a bath once a week is this okay?

      If they refuse to eat, try leaving the room for a bit. New birds often hide their eating for a bit. Most importantly, don't rush them. My mother held my cockatiel the first time we clipped Her nails, and she hates my mom now. However, I can do the same to her all I want (within reason, of course) and shell only be mad at me for an hour or so. Just be very cautious until they come to you. If you freak out the bird, stop and let them adjust.

    What shower pressure is appropriate for a shower shower for a bird? I feel like my shower has pretty high pressure and could hurt them

      Yuliyathehorselover You should give your bird the option of going on the stream or staying in the gentler mist. Or pick up a hand held mister. Choose whatever works best for your situation and your bird :)

    My female budgie loves baths. She likes to dip one side of her body in the water and then she'll dip the other side.

    My question doesn't have to do with birds, but my cat has been acting a bit off. My dad has always been his person, he always sleeps on him/ Sits on him and doesn't really care for the rest of my family. However, over the past week or so, he has taken to sleeping in my room and sitting on me instead. He had never ever done this in the past 5 years we have had him. I took him to the vet and he was perfectly healthy. Is there an explanation for this sudden shift in his behavior?

      Has your father been around him less recently? I had a cat that adored me, but ignored me after I had a surgery. It could also be that you seem more appealing to him as of late.

    I have a cockatiel, and she doesn't ever bathe in the dish. I take her into my showers frequently, and she seems to enjoy the humidity, but not so much the spray of the shower head. Because she is just a cockatiel, it is difficult to mist her without getting her face wet, which she hates. Any advice?

      I'm not Jessie (sorry) but my cockatiel will go after anyone eating in the living room. She likes people food and will even approach strangers for it. Find something your bird really loves (usually food) and only give her it out of the cage.
