But it’s black on black that’s why no one is hyping it up, it’s considered to be “normal”
"Bring back children and return them to their owners" I really hope it's just his language barrier.
I think he didn’t mean it in a bad way (hopefully) I understood that since the kids are sold, they now have owners so they need to return them to their actual “owners” (the parents). I don’t know if that makes sense. But yes, I hope it was just a language barrier.
"Biliguinist here who speaks English and Nuer the language spoken in the video. I understood what he was saying and I was reading the subtitles with it. For the most part they were accurate with translating. There are things that don't translate correctly between different languages. What's lost in translation is that it's not meant to be "owners". It was meant to say have them returned to the ones who take care of them. A generic term. South Sudan is a new nation but it has been in a state of conflict since it's inception. Even before 2011 the area that would be South Sudan was plagued with civil wars for decades. There are simply a lot of children out there from South Sudan who were never reconnected with their parents and are either taking care of themselves or being taken care of by someone. Hence the true translation." -Kun Deng

Why would you even wanna have kids if you are this poor, you can't even feed them. I dont understand this shit.
Dispreet Dhillon, it’s natural. A very few amount of people decide to have sex to make babies in our day and age, but rather to have fun in a recreational activity. Do you really think the parents are jumping up and down all excited about having a kid? No. Because it’s called unplanned pregnancy and they’re aware of the financial burden the child will inflict. Sadly, abortions are generally inaccessible in those impoverished areas, which is why you see these sad stories occurring, not because the parents want to cause pain and suffering to themselves and their children.

It's actually a fascinating answer. If you go back far enough, you'll find that it was the British, French, and Dutch that really began this tradition. Not just in Sudan, but throughout Africa. It's shocking to hear them talk of children as commodities, but that's what colonization does. It takes the native inhabitant and reduces them to a mere commodity. I could see how over a century of that, paired with a complete lack of economic development, might leave a society a bit screwed up.
Drew except that Africans themselves would capture their own and sell them to the Europeans.
@TheExtravagantMule "we are the fire"
as much as it is an excuse, it's a valid answer - that's what he was born into, people probably teach you to participate in it before you are really an adult yourself. there's probably not much of a "why", it's just always been there for the people who do it now.
Being South Sudanese myself, there’s a tribe called Murle who are notorious for kidnapping children and looting cattle. They’ve been doing it for a very long time.
That man with the red cap on his name is David Yau Yau and he belongs to Murle, they operate around Pibor area Jonglei state.
Very true Chol, Yauyau is not reformed. He has just legitimised his operations by being part of the government. Just the other day they raided Lou Nuer villages and took children.
Why doesn't the government ban that behavior?

These kids are sad they didnt go to school and here in America kids hate school and give teachers a headache and complain all day.
you should also consider that teachers in america teach with career-driven mind and are taxed heavily... teachers in impoversihed nations are usually volunteers who are idealists who dont really earn money, and are happy to contribute to the lives of the poor... children in upper class socities dont value school because they believe its obligation... children in lower socities see schooing as luxury and a slice of freedom.. its really a sad reality
If these kids have to face the academic and social pressure in America they would hate it too, people always want what they don’t have.
Nomad Black, it is common for people with low values to take things for granted. Have you seen the DOC. About the most dangerous roads to school. Well some school is better than no school but schools in america suck so much cause after you have become literate the thing they teach you are completely useless in your life or even in your job. Example history and spanish.

kid: "Let me go to the market"
He payed 40 cows for that kid.

only took a decade aswell handy job
Usually the smart people don’t buy slaves or choose a life like that. So kinda makes sense that they would be dull in the head. And you gotta keep in mind he probably somewhat trusted the boy if he had him for multiple years
my mom was one of those kids who fought in the south sudan war, her sisters, brother, and her were kidnapped, my mom got away, but my aunt and uncle went deaf, my grandma left my mom at 3 and came back to her when she came to america, my was 11 when she raised my uncle and aunts, my dad's family lived in Gonder, Ethiopia, my dad's brother killed 1334-1448 people in Ethiopia civil war, he threw missiles at their region, my great grandpa fought against italy in the 30's or 40's, he killed 130- 270 people, 2 weeks before I was born, my dad's little brother died, someone put a whole machete into his head, no one knows who did, and my dad's little brother was about to go to America, my mom's dad fought in some war tho, I did my research and couldnt find how many people he killed, my dad helped in some of the murders my great grandpa committed in the war at 10, sadly tho, I never got to meet my grandpas, my dad's father died in 1997, my mom's father died in 2017 or 2016, I went there to visit my dad's little brother's grave, and both of my grandpas grave, I seen a person shot to death at a protest by some soilders at 8, and most of my dad's child hood friends died, also my mom, dont make memes out of this.
The ending was so powerful..

By the time they took us into the bush, I started to think of my mother that I would never meet her again, my brother, my father and my family all that I would never meet with them, it was like I had died already
"There owners" you mean their families!
Their family sold them so they were technically the first owners.
You must understand that in many languages parents are called owners, so when translated into english there are some minor errors.
_You_ mean their families, clearly, unfortunately, they don't.

What else are they supposed to do tho? Atleast they can now negotiate with the others about getting both sides kids back.
My brother was almost kidnapped once when we went to the night market. Luckily he managed to distract the guy and I found him hiding in a vendor's store. The vendor gave us free food.
To be born in America in the 21st century is a true blessing. Not only to be born here, but to be born at this time period. Just 150 years ago would have been a very hard life.

That statement about bringing back kids to their ’owners’ not family tells you this man’s mindset...
Maybe because their parents sold them in the first place.
Or or or ro ror ro or or his English sucks
You must understand that in many languages parents are called owners, so when translated into english there are some minor errors.
In many languages guardian or owner is referred to the parent. I’m unsure of local customs of south sudan but this could be the case.
This is heartbreaking 😭 to think what the American and other fortunate children complain about vs what these kids go through. The way he called the kids parents their "owners" made me feel a certain way . I don't know how to.explain how it made me feel. It just sounds so weird, like owner of a car a house a pet or something. Kids are an extension of you. You.their parent. You are not an owner, they aren't an item to be traded or bought. They are to be loved.
Sadly, some parents look upon their children as something that fell out of their bodies and as such look upon them as property, and its not just in africa
Your parents do own you until you can take care of yourself. They have full responsibility.
