  • This is a highly detailed ride with lots of info graphics, in addition to some narration. I also had the pleasure of riding with a railfan who is a beat writer for the Miami Marlins baseball team. You will hear lots of train talk in addition to baseball talk. Unfortunately, by the end of the day, this fellow didn’t have much cheerful news to write about as the Phillies won the game 7-1 and the series last night. A Phillies fan and a Marlins fan riding shotgun without incident. He was a good young man, and we did some good-natured ribbing.

Rode those lines a lot when I was a kid in 70's and 80's. The 23 a few times too. My relatives lived right off Gemantown Ave. a few blocks south of CHW. Loved riding the trains and the trolley.

I remember how busy that industrial yard was around the Budd Company in the mid 70s between N Phila station (Westmoreland) and Queen Lane. Lots of freight action then and there were always freight cars in that large siding area that's overgrown with weeds now on the right as you're approaching Queen Ln.

Fond memories of the Chestnut Hill West line. The old Pennsy Tuscan red coaches. Lots of wealthy people live along this line. My junior and senior class trips originated at Chelten Avenue station. Thanks Tim💚👌

16:05 I remember stopping at the old Westmoreland station when I rode this line in the 1970s. You can still see the gate and stairs at the sidewalk and the remains of a platform on the right. Awesome footage. Brings back memories. Thanks!

My old stomping grounds. Lived in Center City and Commuted to Upsal to work at a private school there. Then moved to Carpenter Lane, just down the street from the station.

Road the regional rail for years before moving. It was always a nice break in the day.
Sadly the upkeep hasn't been the best and the subways never felt safe outside of core hours. Still think the regional is well worth it if you get the opertunity.

Rode the Chestnut Hill West line for the first time last summer. Absolutely beautiful. All those PRR stations are beautifully preserved. Now SEPTA is threatening to shut the line down allegedly due to low ridership. Hopefully they're just playing hardball to squeeze more money out of the politicians. It would be devastating to lose this line.

I seriously doubt that would happen as there is a lot of upscale influence on that branch.

I was gonna do Wawa to PHL because I have a better sun angle that way. Will attempt to do that on my next visit. I have actually done Wawa to Norristown in 2022 but not detailed.

It would seem that the Chestnut Neighborhood area is SOOO unique, that the two EAST and WEST rail branches serve as an alternative to beat the Germantown busline traffic.

Buses took over on the line due construction along the route blocking the tracks back in the early 1990's, Rt 23 was the longest street car line in the world at the time but didn't have turn-arounds in the right places to split the route for the cars to keep running. A decision was made to sell off the aging PCC cars and continue with buses on the line even after new rail was laid Chestnut Hill. SEPTA also sold off the turn-around at the lower end of CH so the cars would have to run the full route at the upper end of the line. There were talks over re-introducing trolleys to the line but it looks like that will never happen.
