Martin Winterkorn, examining a Hyundai i30
Fiddling with the steering wheel adjustments, he remarked to his aides with irritation:
"It doesn't clank, BMW can't do it, we can't do it, but they can".

And his aide remarks: We already had a solution, but that was too expensive.

Winterkorn looks (and sounds) worried. He's asking how did they managed to get the steering adjustment that smooth and easy. "How they do that? Easy, smooth, no jingling. BMW can't do that, we can't do that. How they do that?". Epic.

winterkorn is appreciating the solid feel and sounding of the mechnanism to change the steering wheel. he says smth like "no weird sound...bmw can't do it, we can't do it..why can they?!" someone else says: "we had a solution for that but it was to expensive to produce!" it seems like they are also measuring the blind spots by the a-pillars and mirrors.
good job hyuandai/kia...you made a lot of progress in the last years (with the help of your german designers as well).

I remember Winterkorn saying in the ATZ magazine half a year ago "From all the Asian companies, Hyundai is the one that will give us headache."

designers and engineers but the reason why Hyundai headquarter decided
to design in Europe is i30 has specially and mainly been made for european market. Therefore they thought european designer would know and understand exactly what people in the land want to have in their car.

He is very detail-oriented but also does not tolerate failure, so he relied heavily on applying massive pressure and instilling fear into his employees, which may have been the motivation for certain employees to go rogue. Also VW does not have the standard management system that corporations have. Winterkorn was CEO, so was in charge of executive board, but the supervisory board, above the CEO, had a few politicians from the area in Wolfsburg where VW is based. They let Winterkorn do whatever he felt was needed in order to make VW the world's biggest carmaker, so the system of checks and balances was destroyed. Piech even tried to oust Winterkorn this year but failed because he had no support, and he had to quit as Chairman. A very complex issue to say the least.

also they want to reduce cut down the rate of people in work pause.

The reason why Hyundai headquarter in Korea decided to give an precious opportunity to work with them to european
designers & engineers is not a purpose of quality, now that i30 has made for
european market and the company thought they would have more understanding of what people in land want to have in their car even though
there are so many quality designers & engineers. That is it!

I worked for VW a very long time and I can tell you that Winterkorn was the most feared boss they EVER had. Everybody was sweating blood when they were about to present something in front of him. He was obsessed with perfection. A typical cliché German in all aspects. How he could allow this Diesel fuck up to happen is beyond me.

The lever for the steering wheel release makes no sound while moving, BMW can't do it, they can't do it, then he starts with Chevron or, what I think, Chevrolet but aborts. Then he says you cant see wipers no more. They start measuring A-Pillar blind spot from drivers view. I think then they start talking about where the outlets for the air have to work, not sure, I think I heard "Norddeutschland" and "Matschiko" which should be Mexico, does that make any sense?
