Aries Spears spoke about his views on rappers turned actors. The conversation began with a discussion about rappers like DMX and Ice Cube, whose acting, Aries points out, tends to be fairly one-dimensional and within their familiar personas. When asked about Will Smith, Aries acknowledged him as the best amongst rappers turned actors. Aries also brought up Mos Def, Tupac, and Queen Latifah as capable actors with more range. On the other hand, he had less positive views about Common's acting, which he describes as "one tone." Aries stresses the importance of range and depth in acting, comparing rappers' acting skills to those of seasoned actors like Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Denzel Washington, and Al Pacino. The conversation ended with a reminder that opinions are personal, and one's prowess in one field doesn't always translate to excellence in another.

Will Smith is a rapper who became one of the best actors in the game. He even made people believe he had a good marriage for years 😂
🤣.. to be fair though, maybe they have an agreement like an open marriage so people just assume she cheated or he cheated when really they might have an open marriage
And Ludacris is by far worst actor 💯

Mos Def is the most talented emcee EVER. He can freestyle. He can act on screen. He’s done plays. He can rap all different styles. He sings. He does Caribbean and Afrobeat vibes. He can rock in English, Spanish, Arabic or Japanese. He’s just as poetic as Pac or Nas. He’s just as political as Common or Chuck D. He’s just as creative or abstract as Andre 3000 or Q-Tip. You can put Mos Def on a song with JayZ, Dead Prez, Common, Nate Dogg, Pharoahe Monch, Kanye West, The Isley Brothers, Fela Kuti, Busta Rhymes, Jay Electronica, it doesn’t even matter.. he’s going to come with some shxt to match the vibe. He’s not the Greatest Emcee, as far as discography or career. But, Yasiin Bey is absolutely the Mos Talented. He was better than the rest of his cast in Juice. But I wonder, what if Pac and Epps switched roles? Would Tupac still be highly revered for his acting in that film?

Between this clip and another one there's a mistake that's been made. TuPac wasn't a rapper turned actor, he was an actor turned rapper. He started off acting at the School of the Arts then starting rapping later.
You’re not an actor until you get paid for it. PAC was a rapper first. And to prove the point even more, there’s a video of him rapping in school with Jada.
@@itsmob4lifeSo by that logic he wasn't a rapper yet either cause he wasn't getting paid for it yet back in school with Jada
Wanted to say this. He went to the same school (not sure if its acting or dramatic arts) as Jada Pinket Smith
I agree 100%. Actors have to go to acting school-- work hard and still have to stand aside and see rappers get their work. It's unfair. Them movie execs ain't loyal to actors. They're loyal to the box office.
I think 2Pac was a rapper that definitely had the opportunity to be an all around good actor but his life was cut to short but he was on his way.
In fact I believe he could be more successful as actor than he was as a Rapper.

@@liamg1706 first of all, Pac wasn't even from the West -- he was from NYC & grew up in B-More, went to gifted schools, trained to be a dancer & actor. He was no thug until he landed in the Bay Area & then ended up in LA. And if you recall, he first tried to be down with the blue, then sided with the red, plus he turned his back on & dissed the East -- those were fatal moves, so his days were numbered no matter which coast he was on

@@byronspears9395 Yep, great in that.
@@MADSCIENTISTGONESANE6166 Exactly!
Loved him in civil brand and next day air
I have been saying this for years. Unfortunately people who have never acted or truly appreciate what acting is will assume a str in a movie makes them an actor. Sad thing is many of these Rappers are just using film as a vehicle for their brand and do not make any effort to train themselves in acting for greater performance. Very well said Aries and whoever does not understand ...too bad!!!
Holy cow, I actually agree with everything Aries said! There’s a first time for everything! 😂
Ice Cube inspired the movie Boyz in the Hood with his song Boys in the Hood. Ice Cube wrote his next role Friday. How come these trained actors don't write something to star in. Sylvester Stallone wrote Rocky, because he wanted to be Rocky. Rappers shouldn't feel sorry about trained actors not getting roles. because how many people rap, who can't rap. How many actors get record deals, because they're famous actors?
Totally agree with Aries about lack of range esp when it comes to Cube, 50 and DMX
Common has less range than all 3 put together 😂
True....however, i will say 50 tried in the movie "All things fall apart"
@@jayholman502he released 4 movies around that time and finished the 4 movie run with all things fall apart. And 4 of those roles were different G.U.N he was a gangsta so that was his typical role, Streets of blood he was cop completely different, he did "blood in blood" out but that was him losing weight for "all things fall apart". So I can't count that either he wasn't on screen much.
Mos Def can ACT!!!

That ice cube impression is hilarious 🤣
There should be a list of rappers with range regarding acting and rappers with little to no range. A list with singers as well would be dope or musicians no matter the genre period.

All things fall apart if I’m not mistaken
Childish Gambino is up there. Definitely has range and great writing. Method Man was pretty good on The Wire and Oz.
Childish Gambino was really a comedian and actor first
DMX only had like 3 big roles though, I feel like he could’ve shown more range with more time & opportunities
Absolutely. I also thought X was a good actor.
I think DMX's personality transcended the acting. We all saw him as X, not the character he was playing.
They won’t give us opportunities. We have to make our own shit
@@longlivingdudethey need to make money. So him playing himself made easy money.

finally someone said
Damn, Aries is on point with this one 😅
Ice Cube was great with his Voice over in Ninja Turtle
There are actual, professionally trained actors that I feel like have built an entire 20 and 30 year career, basically, 90 percent of the time playing the same character in different movies. Tom Cruise comes to mind. Top Gun in an airplane. Top Gun in a court room Top Gun working for a secret government agency.. etc. etc. The few movies that he did do that moved away from that type of character, and would be useful in an argument that gave him "range" didn't do too well at the box office...
Exactly. All about money. If DMX played a different character nobody would watch.
Aries is so accurate! An opinion makes you bitter in this time and life!! Ppl are so afraid to say someone sucks, or isn’t the best
Method Man is definitely doing his thing on Power. He’s getting better at his craft. But he’s right most rappers just play variations of themselves. Ludacris did an episode of Law & Order SVU a while back and did a very good job. He wasn’t playing some rapper or hood dude either.
Aries Spears is phenomenal!!!!!!!
Yeah...I've always wondered how the hell Common gets more work than the real actors

Common is my favorite MC- but Spears’ take on his acting is on point. It’s just okay. I think he needs a vehicle like Will Smith had: a weekly episodic program that will allow growth. Shout out to the late great Andre Braugher. His character in Spike Lee’s “Get On the Bus” was talking about the same thing: Rapper to actor.
Have you seen hell on wheels that will change your mind

Right now we are in the "lowest acceptance" time in history. There is no demand for great art.
There’s plenty of demand. You it get everything from major corporations who’s job is to make money. I haven’t watch a film in theaters in a bit. However social media is actually developing good content. Independent studios will soon overtake big corporations
A lot of actors don't have range simply because they're not interested in being a versatile actor and there's nothing wrong with that.
@@Jay-im8ur Actors in old Hollywood rarely had range. They played a 'type'.
@@Jay-im8urguess you don’t like capitalism
@@Jay-im8ur because you complain about it all the time. So you either suffer from cognitive dissonance or you don’t understand how capitalism works.
I wouldn't say they don't have range. I would say they're cast for a certain archetype in every movie. They don't get the opportunities to show their range. Look at how long it took certain actors to get roles to show their talent. Will Smith had a some great acting moments in Fresh Prince but it took a really long time for him to get a movie role were where he could show his range. Everyone knew he could act but he kept getting cast as the Fresh Prince.
@@JELIFISH19 I don't know about that. Where The Day Takes You and Six Degrees Of Separation was during the Fresh Prince Era and those roles were pretty different, haha.

There's a little known movie by Common called "LUV" where he actually did some true acting. Check it out if you can. But other than that, I agree he's one dimensional.
Luv was an excellent movie! Not a lot of people know about it and that was the movie that introduced me to the kid that eventually plays Tariq in Power. That kid did his thing in that movie too.
I thought the same thing. John Wick 2 also showed a little more range.
The best acting I’ve ever seen from Will Smith was on an episode of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air : Ben Vereen played his absentee father, who came back into his life, only to leave again… heartbreaking performance from Will Smith.
Shit made me shed a tear as a yungin
Same here.
Absolutely that scene alone made a generation emotional because of how real and raw it was so many folks could relate also.
That scene from Fresh Prince and the final scene from Pursuit of Happiness I think are his best acting. The simplicity of him just clapping his hands and crying tears of joy translated the perfect emotion you can feel in that scene.
