    Very interesting to see two extremes of body types here. Though I do like the pendulum step, because of my fencing background prior to martial arts, I find a lot of uses in the shuffle. For me it doesn't have to cover more distance and be powerful because I have the muscles trained up to make small and fast shuffles.
    Also, I'm about average height and size, so in terms of body type I split the difference between Mike and Seth, so I guess for medium sized people they can swing either way.

It always felt awkward but after years of it and trying other martial arts I reliesed my foot work benefited greatly..I notice I didn't take little check steps before moving like my other counter parts learning and the more experienced practitioner's/teachers noticed my foot work as well.

    Super interesting seeing this conversation because it's literally the opposite of the way I see it. I practice ITF taekwondo and we have both, point sparring (which is okay to hit with decent power, just not excessive power, so kicks still hurt) and power breaking, which is a modality where you have all the time in the world to set up a kick and winner is the one who has the strongest kick.
    We always use a pendulum style step for the power breaking, more of a step since we're not going for speed but just max power. At the same time, we never do it in sparring because it's too slow and telegraphed so it basically never hits.
    The slide, or lift and shift, as Van Roon calls it, is faster if you consider the amount of time the opponent has to react, since it takes longer to realize you started moving.
    Also, on the pendulum, there is a good chance that you will get hit with both feet together, which is a certain knock down, while on the slide, lifting your leg before approaching actually uses the kicking leg as a protection, the higher leg approaching also protects the kick from getting jammed.
    In terms of power, I disagree with Seth on this one. When you slide, your hips are on full extension before impact, you use the hip to move forward, so you can't add much of the hip into the kick since it's already far in front of your supporting leg. When you pendulum, your hip comes with the leg, so when you kick you can still throw it forward since your weight is above your supporting leg, instead of already falling forward.
    Also, pendulum is definitely easier to get back into position, slide has a higher commitment if you do it with decent power.

  • @lordtains
    @lordtains ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Honestly I don't see why you should choose. I think I use all of these in sparring (pendulum, switch, slide) depending on where my balance/weight is, and what my opponent is doing. Although I probably use the pendulum a bit more than the other two.

    A tkd guy who's done kickboxing and MMA, for me it's about range. The "problem" with the pendulum step is there's a moment where your feet come together and if you get hit then, you're in trouble, which is why I'll make sure I'm out of my opponent's range when I do that part because the pendulum step allows you to cover quite a bit of ground. On the other hand the slide is great when you just need to cover a little bit of distance because it is super quick, and it has the benefit of being safer at closer range without that feet together footwork.

    I love how often this comes up when you two are in the same video. I will say that the whole frame of "which is better" is needlessly binary, but it feels like you're pretty self-aware in that regard, haha. Both of these things have their time and place.
    Beyond that, there was some mention of how different builds can impact these things, but probably not nearly as much emphasis as is warranted. Sensei Seth is pretty darn tall and has very long legs. He's also practiced A LOT of kicking and is pretty athletic. That makes a huge difference.
    If we're comparing time/investment in learning these two different types of footwork and to perform them correctly and safely - pendulum I think is obviously a clear winner. It's a fairly simple movement and transitions your weight over an single approx. point. It feels relatively natural and allows you to smoothly clear space forward, backward, or out-and-back (more on this shortly). This type of footwork also shows up in other athletic activities, too, like basketball and football. So a new student is more likely to be familiar to some degree.
    The slide requires you stay balanced on the same foot for much longer and maintain that balance while using hip extension and whatnot to basically hop 'n pop that kick out farther. That requires more coordination and I think is more likely to result in folks at low or mid tier skill levels slipping and falling. I also don't think I've ever seen this performed where I was convinced it wasn't producing less rather than more power unless you're at a high level of skill - precisely b/c you spend so much time on a single foot hopping about.
    Watch new folks do the slide. Then watch them pendulum, I guarantee you they'll understand and perform the latter more effectively. Sure, if you're advanced, and have strong, long legs and great balance, you'll be able to do this slide effectively. That's not most people.
    Additionally, the pendulum is for more than just throwing a kick and getting in/out. It can be used to create or clear a substantive amount of distance in a short time in a linear direction. Lean that weight in the direction you want to go and swoosh. You'll find yourself doing a pendulum type footwork all the time when controlling distance or moving around during sparring. It's a skill you use elsewhere, so using it again for kicking allows you to take advantage of something you're getting reps in already.
    I think we discount people who do the pendulum to "cheat" for high kicks unnecessarily. Again, low to mid skill-level fighters can use this technique to accomplish something they otherwise couldn't. Should they shore up that flexibilty and form? Sure! But that takes time and effort and conditioning. And throwing up a high kick with the pendulum, even poorly, isn't terribly risky or problematic. Its also certainly "powerful enough" for most people of the same skill level.
    Idk, seems like a weird fixation, haha. But I gotta say, the switch kick for either a front or rear kick is great though with lots of variations that can be used to throw off timing and clear some distance. Varga isn't totes off base, haha (as you might imagine for someone of his skill level!). I don't' think it's as simple as inherently "better" than sliding or pendulum, but ooooh boi do I absolutely love switch kicks. Easy to learn, train, applicable to virtually all skill levels. Tasty!

    It's a matter of where your centre of gravity is. Seth is not only taller but has relatively longer legs (compared to his torso) so the pendulum is less centred for him. I have the same issue and I prefer the slide. It means we have to commit more when doing a pendulum and lose the retreat speed

    • @Vinnay94
      @Vinnay94 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed. I'm taller than Mike but probably still shorter than Seth. I really wanna learn the slide though but I am struggling. The pendulum step makes it too easy.

    Pendulum step can be useful when confusing the opponent with footwork hiding the step, the slide step can cover more distance.

    Pendulum for the D'Amato shift, kicking the groin, kicking at angles, kicking right after you lean into your jab and the opponent retreats, and retreating jabs. Sliding for quick power.

    Pendulum is superior.
    Period.
    The karate system has validity...
    But in terms of general application the pendulum is best. Period

    If you add the Slide with Pendulum but fully commit to the Kick through, you get a very long range Roundhouse Kick.

    Mike is 100% right. Seth is 100% wrong.
    The slide is good for one thing -- a lead leg side kick from a bladed stance. The pendulum step has so many more uses.

    i think the slide off the front foot for a roundhouse is king. If you can twist your ankle, and at the same time go forwards, it elongates the kick so much and hit, allowing you to cover distance. I think the pendulum step is great for disruption and scoring points, OR setting u traps later. But if I had to pick one, I'd say slide. Sorry Icy MIKE hahahah

    “There’s such a thing as powerful enough” 100% agree. You don’t have to throw everything into a punch or kick in the street… 90% of the time. As long as you keep your opponents respecting “powerful enough”, a full power shot that ends the fight will turn their whole world view on its head.

  • @medkemia

    I think the slide relies more on being on the bladed stance like Seth uses, but you don't necessarily need to be in that stance for the pendulum
    For me, being a 6'2 guy and not trained in karate like Seth, I don't prefer kicking higher than my waist, so pendulum works for me...

    I get that you guys are playing up the argument for the video but, for real, I don't see these two techniques as truly comparable. Different goal and use cases for each, keep both in the quiver. Unless Gabriel Varga says no.

    Pendulum step for lead roundhouse. Slide step for lead side kick...if only those worked. Also the lead low kick loads up a nasty right cross.

  • @Mr440c

    I personally dislike both approaches. But my way is to be ambidextrous and to just walk into your kick. It's safest for not only your joints but for the spine as well. Not too much counter rotation. Also allows to generate most power with least effort. Just let yourself go. But this technique is more committed off course. Not good for points scoring. It's for braking your opponent in half.

    Seth showed amazing ki-power on his self defence move at 05:59. When you are arguing with an ass, distract them and move out of the harms way.

    Seth uses bullshit arguments. Saying first he is moving his full body mass, but then says he can be as fast as with pendulum. So you say you can move your full body mass as fast as moving only leg's mass? I don't think so.

  • @brandonrogers8621
    @brandonrogers8621 ปีที่แล้ว

    Roy Jones shouldn't fight with his hands down.but he does and it works.Seth probably shouldn't step the unsafe way but he is less likely to get injured do to his experience and his body adapting to time under tension but if he where to step the way mike is showing even if he stepped wrong or made a mistake it further lessens the likely hood of injury.If you know your body and your limitations that's what matters
