Most aren’t penalties However the hit at 7:27 on Bradshaw caused him to be carted off the field and was a penalty in the 70s which tells you how bad it was.

5:56 1974 Buffalo Bills v. Miami Dolphins, #22 RB Mercury Morris getting slammed by Bills #42 Neal Craig. Morris was "alright"... but not, he wasn't already right because the previous year he'd cracked two vertebrae in his neck and the Miami team doctors told him it was a sprain. He fought with the league for the better part of a decade to get his disability payments and pension sorted out...
There though, he'd had the breath "knocked out of him"* and managed to get up and take off while still not breathing properly, and passed out.
*if you don't know, what actually happens is you've expanded your diaphragm already, in other words taken the breath, and your nervous system "forgets" you've done it and leaves you trying to breathe in when you've already done so. It's not fun, you pretty much either have to grasp and understand why the person standing over you is telling you to breathe out while you're gasping like a fish out of water. I'm amazed he had the will to get up and move!

React to NHL Rivals: Boston Bruins versus Montreal Canadiens. Over 90 years of turmoil, blood, and hatred, these two teams culminated 30 Stanley Cups and 54 Stanley Cup finals appearances. They have also shared incredible moments like the Brawl in the Hall, Too Many Men in Game 7 of the 1979 Semifinals, they're back and forth battles in the 80s, and Nathan Horton's Game 7 miracle in 2011. They are forever NHL RIVALS!

The question of "is it a penalty" can be answered in one word... Depends. Some of it depends on how long ago the slam in question happened, and what were the rules at the time.
Mostly though, it depends on the player doing the slam (if the slammer has a history of aggressive play), the teams for which the players play (slammer[some are penalized more than others] vs slamee[some are protected more than others]), as well as the individual officials attitude, and different times when there's a certain emphasis coming from the league office.
That is why you could see some of the clips in the video getting flags or chastising comments from the announcers, while other clips seemed to be complimented by the announcers and there was no penalty.

There are rules to tackling, and its not about how hard the tackle is, but the position of the players, and their situation on the field. For example, when the QB is backfield after the snap he can only be tackled in a certain way, but if the QB starts to rush downfield, then he can get tackled like any other player.

These are all legal tackles. There was a craze in the late 70s when every offensive and defensive linemen started taking Judo in the off season to help with their tackling pretty soon the every defensive player in the league was taking Judo lessons. 30 years later the parts of judo that help with tackling are being taught by NFL coaches . A fighting style that trains you to use your opponents momentum against them without throwing punches or kicks is about as football as it gets.

7:59 this was a Monday Night game back in 1984 1985... The Chicago Bear QB (Black Jersey, black helmet) had just thrown n Int. and while the man was running the ball back, the Greenbay Packer (White jersey, yellow helmet) was flagged and they said "he should be thrown out of the game". This was "Excessive"/ He claims he was "blocking the potential tackler" which we can see is BS. And you can not block by grabbing (aka holding) and hugging, lighting, and slamming.... he just wanted to hurt the other team's QB. It was an intention to hurt or cause serious injury and was not at all necessary in the evolution of the play. That is/was a 15-yard penalty and automatic first down (if the yards were not enough for the first down already). but on the very next clip, you see that it was one continuous movement, the player did not try to drive the man into the turf and the ref is there seen running in to mark the ball and not reaching at all for his flag (in his back pocket).

2 things. 1 these hits used to be allowed but in today’s game would be a personal foul, 15 yard penalty with possible ejection
2 re the hockey refs not stopping fights earlier, they don’t get paid enough and aren’t tough enough to take a punch, so they wait until it’s safe. Ask yourself would you step into the middle of a fight?

  • @thumper7047

Unnecessary roughness is one of those all-encompassing rules that officials will tell you “you know it when you see it.” The rulebook literally says examples of the foul are not limited by what’s specifically listed in the rulebook itself.
However, the rulebook does outline several specific cases in which unnecessary roughness should be called. For example, diving into a player on the ground, using the foot or leg to strike an opponent, etc. There is nothing specific in the rulebook about picking up and throwing down a player, but I believe this is the rule in play [Rule 12, section 2, article 6, footnote f].
There shall be no unnecessary roughness. This shall include, but will not be limited to:
    (f) throwing the runner to the ground after the ball is dead...
So basically, it's up to the Ref and how he sees it. "Was it necessary, was it excessive? Was the play blown dead (by the whistle)... For example, you can pick him up and throw him down in one consistent move,,, but trying to intentionally drive the player into the turf, might be considered "excessive"... some refs will call it, some will not. In those videos, most of them, you see the ref right there and he never goes for the flag.

  • @Moose6340

You're not allowed to take players to Suplex City in the NFL (anymore) if they land on their head. Basically dumping them on their head is a penalty and will probably draw a fine or suspension. If they land on their back then they may not get a flag thrown. There's a lot of judgement call to it in the NFL, sometimes (and some refs) it gets called, sometimes it doesn't. They're supposed to be cracking down on head hits.
