Marshall Kent just had one of the most wild runs ever to climb that stepladder. But I’m so happy for him! He absolutely deserves this, from almost stepped away from bowling to being a major champion!
I have to say, that might have been the most bizarre TV championship round in a long time, if not ever. Jason Sterner began the first game with FOUR consecutive open frames, Marshall Kent then starting with the first 6 strikes in the second game, only to throw his next ball in the channel, then in the next game, striking on what might have been the worst shot in the history of the PBA on TV to end up in a strike, to E.J. Tackett's shoulder injury affecting the outcome of the third game, during which he missed a 10-pin, which was the shot on which he seemed to aggravate that injury, to Kent nearly throwing two more in the channel, one on the right lane in the third game (vs. Tackett) and another in the last game which opened the door for possible defeat. It certainly was a day of destiny for someone who, until this year, would probably have been considered a journeyman, but is now a major champion. Another thing that happened, and the odds of this happening are absolutely astronomical, is that the winner of the Tournament of Champions this year defeated the same four players that Jason Belmonte beat last year in the finals to become the ToC's only 4-time champion. First, what are the odds of any four players making to the finals of a major championship two years in a row, and then those same four players all wind up losing in the stepladder final for a second consecutive year to the eventual champion (though not in the same order as last year).
@@mpup54 As it was, it might have been the most bizarre 267 ever shot on TV. but that was keeping with what went on from the first shot of the telecast, which was the worst break a bowler can get, the pocket 7-10 left by Jason Sterner, which led to the first of four consecutive open frames to start that match, through the entire telecast. One of Kent's final shots nearly went into the channel when he could have shut out Anthony Simonsen, so that kind of nuttiness went on from start to finish. I've seen individual moments like that, such as Del Ballard, Jr.'s infamous shot into the channel that cost him a tournament in 1991, but that kind of bizarre thing went on during the entire telecast today.
Tackett was easing way back on his armswing for the 10 pin that he missed, seems like it was aggravated from a little bit ago and lingered at least on spares
@@cjs83172 Bowling is like that. Some guys have certain patterns and houses locked down. The odds of the same four people makes sense when you look at who they are. They are all having great seasons. EJ has made 8 shows this year; I'm not surprised to see him on the telecast.
@@mikelombard21 Certainly it's not a surprise to see E.J. and Simonsen make the finals of the ToC the past two years, because they have been among the very best over the past several seasons. Why it's amazing to me to have any four players make the finals of the same major championship in back-to-back seasons has nothing to do with how good they're playing, or even their games fitting certain lane conditions, because we see that in other sports, as well (the expression "horses for courses" comes to mind), but rather the quality of the field in such events. That's what makes what those four players did as a group so amazing.
If anyone hasn't noticed, the lanes used in this event are the exact same pair of lanes on which the first televised 300 game on the PBA tour was bowled on by the late Jack Biondolillo in 1967. Lane 28 is where Jack's last 3 strikes were bowled on.
Honestly, I was hoping Tackett or Simo would get the W here but after seeing how much it meant to Kent and how happy everyone including EJ and Simo were for him I'm glad he got it, congrats Mr. Kent, well done.
Those 5 bowlers are some of the best ambassadors for the game. Lot's of great matches. Congratulations to Marshall Kent. E J take care and get rested and healed.
Agreed. This oil pattern was toughest scoring-wise (look at qualifying) all season, and the lanes being bowled on are over 50 years old. I like it when it's a chess match. Players have to handle their nerves and the conditions and it makes for compelling events.
The most dramatic run of the table ever! Congrats. The emotional display at the end appropriately capped off potentially the best episode of pro bowling finals ever!!!
To anyone who may complain about Marshall's luck, he has spent the last 10 years not receiving anything at all in the luck department, this is his comeback year (Note to the PBA to introduce a Comeback POY like the NFL lol)
What a friggin whirlwind Marshall Lmao happy for you my man! The talent has always been there! The luck was running rampant today!! Gotta have em both!
That start in the first game for Sterner....I wonder how many times that has actually happened? The only other time I can remember a bowler starting a game with 4 consecutive open frames was Mike Edwards at the 1991 Arc Pinole Open.
I bet no one has ever come from 4th or 5th seed in a major, missed the headpin as many times as Kent did, and won the championship. Or has anyone in a telecast ever had a 270 from perfect but for one gutter? Wild games. Congrats.
And to think poor David Krol got absolutely drug through the mud after winning his first title a month ago (and taking out everyones favorite Billy O on his way to that title). Well after this miraculous win here by Marshall I hope all those people apologize as I don't see any of them hating on how Marshall managed to win this lol.
“Never stop bowling” what a great victory for Marshall and to all the top guys; what sportsmanship and thank you for everything you do, all the hard work, and example you’re setting. Randy and the team, you make bowling amazing to watch on TV. The sport is in a good place.
So very happy for Marshall. He almost gave it up last year. EJ and others like Carolyn Darrin-Ballard convinced him to stay in it. Really pleased. EJ and him are best friends after all, he was in Natalie and EJs wedding as a groomsman! He has me crying!
Awesome Marshall! I enjoyed watching you bowl roughly 10yr ago when you came to Hawaii & bowled at Schofield. You're having such an awesome year & i'm happy to watch such a dedicated athlete like yourself apply yourself.
This has been a pretty great PBA season. It's a real chase for Player of the Year. Kent, Tackett, and Troup each have 2 wins with a one being a major, but guys like Simo and O'Neill could win the PBA Playoffs or Tour Finals and jump into the mix too with a 2nd win. I'd give Tackett the slight edge currently because he leads in average and shows, but it's a pencil thin lead.
Great win by Marshall! I particularly liked those two strikes in the 7th, and 8th frame of the Championship match! Those two really said not this time Simo! This one is mine! Pure magic. Congratulations well deserved!
Since 2020, all of the winners have climbed the stepladder. Prather, Lavoie, Belmo, and now Marshall Kent joins for four years in a row that someone climbed the ladder for the win. Glad he finally got one
It seems like Sterner, EJ and Simo all kind of choked pretty hard. Ogle showed up to bowl but that was the one match Kent dominated with 10 strikes (11 if you count the spare after the gutter) and just outplayed him. Kent didn't bowl bad but he really caught more than his fair share of lucky breaks. Like they say, it was destiny. Congratulations to Marshall Kent. He's a very likeable young man with a bright future ahead of him in the PBA.
"you go pick up that trophy" from tackett is so wholesome. EJ and Marshall are indeed homies for life
Great sportmanship from EJ and Simo. Great win for Marshall, glad to see him finally win the big one.
Sucks to lose, but they're all pretty close friends on tour. How could you not be happy for each other, right?
Thanks for spoiling the video for everyone who hasn't seen it yet!
EJ was behaving like a whiny child. Definitely not a good showing
Yes Cirtis well.said. Kent is one of rhe nicest and most popular player on the tour.
@ForrestGumpWR He was hurt iceman and be was very happy for Kent. Stupid comment.
I cannot tell you, how unbelievably happy I am with the results of this event.
Agreed
I think everyone was. It was wholesome to see how happy Ej and Simo were for a very emotional Kent. Great broadcast
I was at this event in person and everyone was super nice and I got all 5 of them to sign my jersey
i wish i went i was on a date bc i didn’t know this was only 30 minutes away from me
Congratulations to Marshall becoming a major winner! The bowling gods were looking out for him the entire finals.
Yea he was luckbox should lost to EJ
Yeah fr cuz he for sure didn’t deserve it. Threw the ball like 🤮🤮🤮 I personally like Marshall Kent but he low key trash lol

Marshall almost threw 12 balls in one game that knocked down 10, plus a gutter, but he blew it in the 12th
I guess he figured out the right lane!! 😂
Kent has struggled on television for so long. It was nice to see him walk away with the W.
And he struggled immensely today also
