  • Hey guys, today we are changing the timing belt, timing belt tensioner and water pump on this Renault Clio 2 1.2 16v with the D4F 722 engine. This engine is also mounted in many other vehicles. The Renault Clio, Twingo, and Modus. Dacia Logan and Sandero as well as the Proton Savvy.
    The procedure for changing the cambelt is broadly similar across all these vehicles.

      If the clutch on this one ever starts to slip or gets bearing noise then yes I will.

    For all the guys who dont know the Radio code after reconect the battery. There is an app to generate the code with the serialnumber from the radio.

    Gonna being doing this soon on my mk3, regarding the head gasket tho. No overheating and visible smoke is only when it’s cold, however I do seem to be losing coolant over a couple of months at a time. Dipstick has no signs of mayo, is there any other reason for a coolant loss ie thermostat or water pump. No signs of leaks that I can see either

      Other than leaks, mixing, or burning it, there isn't anywhere else for coolant to be going on these as they don't have an oil cooler. Leakage over a couple of months is something I've personally had on a few cars. Such a leak is so small it's incredibly difficult to find. You could try pressure testing the system. I certainly wouldn't change a head gasket over it though.

    Note to others doing this job. I would not recommend the BGA kit from GSF. The water pump I received seemed cheap and was faulty. I can recommend the SKF kit which can be purchased on Amazon though.

      Good to know. I used the Dayco. People also report problems with the Gates kits.

      It can vary massively parts can be bought for a little over £100 but a garage may charge much more. Labour rates could be £50 - £100 an hour. Typically I would say you could expect to be quoted £350 - £550.

    Does removing the crankshaft pulley affect the timing? I have a 1.4 16v engine. Thought I'll just remove the belt and get the screw out with a power tool, swap it and call it a day. Do I need to readjust the timing after?

      So you are just looking to remove the alternator belt and the crankshaft pulley?
      If that is the case then no they don't affect engine timing. If you removed the timing belt you would need to worry about engine timing.

    Shame it hasnt got air con, coz mine has, that made it a little more awkward than it should have been, plus no one has done a video of one with air con.
