Well this was a pleasant surprise! Between "Dog Day Afternoon" and "Network" alone, I realized very recently that Lumet may be my personal favorite filmmaker. I envy the students and film lovers who have not yet waded into his work.
Glad they emphasised The Hill, its a very underrated war film, and even more underrated Sean Connery performance, he’s fantastic in that role, alongside some great character actors like Harry Andrews & Ossie Davis. Really should be a classic in the WW2 movie canon
About 2 months ago, I rented Night Falls On Manhattan from Choovie when I discovered it was directed by Sydney Lumet. I didn't get around to watching though until about a week before this episode aired. I would say its a very good film and helps make up for some of Lumet's misfire during the 1990s'.
Edgar Wright's favorite Lumet movies: 12 Angry Men, The Pawnbroker, The Hill, The Anderson Tapes, Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon, Network and The Verdict (Source: Mubi) My favorites are 12 Angry Men, Serpico, Network and Dog Day Afternoon.
Never saw 12 Angry Men but I grew up on Hey Arnold and there’s this one episode where a student is accused of pulling a fire alarm and it becomes a parody of 12 Angry Men. When the clip was shown of the knife being propped on the table, a lightbulb went off in my head and I went “oh shit, that’s the Wankyland pencil.” Needless to say, I will find the time to watch 12 Angry Men.
Sidney Lumet is like the Nolan Ryan of directors. Played for 27 years, had plenty of great seasons and occasionally could throw 101, but nobody would ever consider him one top 5 pitchers, talent wise, of all time.
I would consider him top 5 of all time. It depends on what you want. I would put Lumet ahead of Kubrick or Fincher or David Lean, because there movies have an unsubtlety and bluntness in acting and visual style. Lumet really understood acting and the more you watch his movies, the more you see small momemts that reveal the contradictions of human psychology
As some one who is definitively NOT a Vin Diesel fan, I don't understand how you guys can be so dismissive of Find Me Guilty.....it's a legit good courtroom comedy featuring not only a career-best performance from Vin but likely the last great performance from Ron Silver plus really strong work from Peter Dinklage. That said, still a great deep dive! Yeah that early '70's Connery stuff was strange but pretty good.
38:10 "It's his attempt to do Network for the world of hospitals & medicine & healthcare." Did Sean forget about the George C Scott film The Hospital? That's Network in a hospital. Not Critical Care, which is a bad 90s comedy.
Amanda is one of those people who says “yeah 🙄🙄” after everything another person says as though she already thought of it. She thinks she’s intelligent and she’s one of the dimmest people I’ve heard talk about film and books.
@@nikosvaultI'm almost 20 minutes in and she really hasn't said anything over then yeah. I think she's intelligent, but this hasn't been her finest hour. Just because someone criticizes a woman doesn't make them a misogynist.
Imagine pulling off Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon and Network back to back to back 😂
Chris Ryan makes lifts up every podcast he goes on.
Y’all should do a rewatchable for Sidney Lumet like 12 Angry Men or Dog Day.
Everyone is super sharp in this, thank you for making this episode!
CR my guy! Hyping up The Hill, Lumet's best movie in my opinion.
Prior to booting this vid up, I bought and read the Lumet book because you guys mentioned it.
Holy christ is it a great read. Thank you.
Now to prepare for the Robert Altman/Sam Peckinpah at 100 next february?

Great deep dive for an all time great enjoyed this one and glad the brought up some of his earlier work a lot might not of seen..

So cool that you added the movie clips!
"Q & A" (1990) starring Nick Nolte! It's a beast of a film!
That is a bizzare film
@@MrOctober44 Yeah, Nolte goes all the way dark. It's a scary film.
Love you guys did this!!

Use me as a "post the Pulp Fiction video, you cowards" button.
Lumet is better than Tarantino
@@harryschiller5368 Relax, I enjoy Lumet movies too, it was just a bit of fun
My favorite books that I read in film school were Walter Murch's book and Lumet's Making Movies
The guy has made at least ten MASTERPIECES, there's not many directors that can say the same.
In my opinion, The Fugitive Kind definitely belongs in the top 10
Surprised this wasn't a Sean iso play but let's go!
great tribute - thanks

Prince of the city is an underrated film
@@madgenius2278 it solid, but it's impossible to not compare it to Serpico which is a classic and it pales in comparison
@@MrOctober44 absolutely agree I love serpico I enjoy prince of the city
Equus is about a boy who blinds horses not about a boy who gets blinded.
Where is the pulp fiction video?
Just to clarify....Deathtrap is based on a play from Ira Levin, not a novel. And...it's pretty close to a straight lift from the play.
Watching Dog Day Afternoon for the first time in honor of Sidney Lumet
So envious of you. It's one of the absolute best.
Also watched 12 Angry Men for the first time last night, 5 star classic
@@paulthesaintsfan9137 If you have not seen "Network," it's not just my favorite of his but my second favorite film, period.
@@spenserdavis788 Saw "Network" a few years ago for the first time. Tremendous.
Kimmel does the live versions of the old sitcoms on ABC. NBC does the musicals.

I thought that was Dave Grohl in the middle and then realized its Amanda, lol.
The Hill, The Anderson Tapes
Running On Empty.

I don't think Long Day's Journey into Night is Lumet's second feature
Yeah, there are several between "12 Angry Men" and this one.
His movies never have a happy ending. He said he hates the audience's need for sentimentality.
😴😴😴
I can’t even listen anymore w Sean’s arrogance (why) and Amanda’s vocal fry and vocabulary deficiency. What is the opposite of Rizz?
